Local Fire & EMS, Red Cross install over 180 smoke alarms in District 4 homes

COLUMBUS, Ga. () — Local fire and EMS paired up with the American Red Cross to help over 300 community members get smoke alarms in their homes Saturday morning.
'Sound the Alarm' is an annual event where crews go out to neighborhoods in need and install smoke alarms for free. This year, crews installed 183 alarms in 97 homes in District 4 of the city.
District 4 Councilor Toyia Tucker told WRBL this is an area in Columbus where many homes were built before smoke detectors were required. She said this has lead to multiple deaths in the past year.
'For some of these older homes, what if they had a smoke detector to actually alert them if an incident occurred and they're able to get out?' Tucker said, noting how heartbreaking the preventable deaths have been.
She said the free installation of the devices makes all the difference.
'You're not just getting a device to put on your counter and hope that it gets installed one day, it's actually being installed for free,' Tucker said. 'I just think that's a great asset for this community.'

Bright Futures Joplin moves from snack packs to mini pantries

JOPLIN, Mo. — Summer is just getting started, but an area organization is already starting to think about school getting back in session. Bright Futures Joplin is turning its attention to how to keep kids fed when school starts back up. For several years, the agency has offered the Snack Pack Program to the tune of more than $20,000 a year. Those have been offered to early childhood, elementary, and middle school students. Last year, Bright Futures changed that for middle school students, shifting from snack packs to a mini pantry at each middle school. Now, they need help keeping the community keeping those stocked. Bright Futures Joplin Executive Director Amanda Stone says while single serving snack packs are great for younger students, older kids need something different. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. With schools out, childhood hunger increases

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – With students starting to get out of school for the summer, hunger will start to rise. Food banks across the area start to see an increase in families needing help when the school year ends. Some children rely on the school breakfast and lunch, and over the summer they may miss a meal. The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia says it starts working in January to fill the gap they start to see in the warmer months. The Foodbank says one in four children in the area will be hungry during the summer months. Adding it has seen a 30% increase since COVID and longer lines as new families show up each time. 'When you see a reduction in those federal benefits, the gap still needs to be filled by somebody. And our neighbors are going to look at us. As you know, the, you know, preeminent organization in the area of tackling food insecurity. So we're definitely hearing and seeing an increase in people that have never had to come to the foodbank before are now showing up for the first time ever,' said Jeremy Rodden, Community Engagement Manager. Hunger Heroes aims to help feed families during the busy summer months The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia has programs throughout the summer, like Hunger Heroes, that is created to combat summer hunger.
