Ryan Giggs says 11-a-side football remains the cornerstone of the sport

The Suna day ago
FORMER Manchester United star Ryan Giggs believes the traditional 11-a-side format will continue to be the cornerstone of global football, despite the growing popularity of small-sided formats such as 7-a-side.
Speaking at a Liga 7x7 All Stars 2025 tournament event held at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium, Cheras, here, the Welshman said even though the shorter format offers entertainment and engagement, particularly among younger audiences, but it cannot replace the full version of the game.
'I think obviously 11-a-side will always be there, and I think there's room for smaller formats of the game as well.
'Quicker games, rolling subs, more goals, more excitement, but it'll never replace 11-a-side because that's your bread and butter in every league and every international league in the world,' he told a pre match press conference, here, today.
Meanwhile, former Chelsea and England captain John Terry shared similar sentiments, saying the 7-a-side format is exciting and has strong digital appeal, especially when combined with social media personalities and content creators.
'This format and this style of football is very exciting. The game's changed over the last 10 years and the actual following of these kinds of games and events is really big,' he said.
On the other hand, Manchester United forward Dimitar Berbatov, said the small-sided football has its advantage in developing technical ability, thanks to its tight spaces.
'This type of football is always popular in my country (Bulgaria). Even when I was a little boy, I still play to this day five-a-side, six-a-side, seven-a-side, so it's nothing new to me,' he said.
For today's tournament, Giggs will lead Team Wizards, Terry will be the captain Team Bangsa Bola, Berbatov will spearhead Team Zurich while former national striker Safee Sali will spearhead Team Harimau.
The one-day tournament feature four teams and will also play by a mix of retired professionals, prominent figures such as former Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, Capital A Bhd chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes and ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC) Malaysia chair Tan Sri Nazir Razak as well as local celebrities and influencers.
Among the rules are each match will be played in 30 minutes with 15 minutes each half, no slide tackles and rolling-substitutions with players can be in and out the game anytime and unlimited. - Bernama

"Whilst every fan is entitled to their opinion on performance and result I don't agree or think that it's ok to target someone's appearance or race," Carter, who is Black, posted in a lengthy Instagram statement. "I am taking this measure to protect myself in a bid to keep my focus on helping the team anyway I can. "Hopefully speaking out will make the people writing this abuse think twice so that others won't have to deal with it." The 27-year-old has started all four of England's games at the tournament. England play Italy in the semifinals on Tuesday in Geneva. "We have made historic changes with this Lionesses squad that I am so proud to be a part of and my hope is that by speaking out about this it will make another positive change for all." FA CEO Mark Bullingham condemned the abuse. "Our priority is Jess and giving her all the support she needs," Bullingham said in a statement. "We strongly condemn those responsible for this disgusting racism." Bullingham said the FA has been in contact with UK police, who are in touch with the relevant social media platform. "We are working with police to ensure those responsible for this hate crime are brought to justice," he said. "Regrettably this is not the first time this has happened to an England player, so we had measures in place to allow us to respond quickly and where possible provide information to support any potential police action." Man Utd need more pace in midfield, says Amorim after Leeds draw

MANCHESTER United manager Ruben Amorim admitted his team lacked pace in midfield after a goalless pre-season draw against Leeds United on Saturday. The match, played in Stockholm, marked United's first outing of their pre-season campaign. United endured a disappointing 2024-25 Premier League season, finishing 15th and missing out on Champions League qualification after losing the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur. Their struggles continued against newly promoted Leeds, with new signing Matheus Cunha failing to make a significant impact in the starting lineup. 'We suffered a little bit when we tried to press high, they kick the ball, win the second ball and they were a danger in that moment,' Amorim told MUTV. 'We have a lack of pace, especially in the middle of the park, and you can feel it, (so) that's hard to bring the ball (forward). But we created chances.' Despite the underwhelming performance, Amorim remained optimistic, calling it a 'good test' against a Premier League opponent. 'As a group, we have a lot to improve, the speed of the game, all the details, so, yeah, we are going to improve,' he added. United's next pre-season fixture is against West Ham United at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 26. - Reuters

Sze Fei-Izzuddin miss chance to make history, set to lose world No. 1 ranking

PETALING JAYA: It was a double blow for shuttlers Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani after the duo missed out on their second consecutive Japan Open title and are also set to lose their world No. 1 ranking. Yesterday (July 19), Sze Fei-Izzuddin went down 16-21, 17-21 to South Korean hotshots Seo Seung-jae-Kim Won-ho in the final at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. Seung-jae-Won-ho, who are currently ranked No. 3 in the world, would also officially take over from Sze Fei-Izzuddin as the new world No. 1 pair when the rankings list updates tomorrow (July 21). The independent pair were hoping to become the first Malaysians in the men's doubles to win the title in Japan more than once, but found the Koreans too hot to handle and lost out in a fast-paced match lasting just 38 minutes. Sze Fei admitted that Seung-jae-Won-ho were the better pair on the day. "The Koreans are very fast. We tried to catch up with them, but they were just too good," said Sze Fei, in a post-match interview with the Badminton World Federation (BWF). "We had nothing to prove against them. We just wanted to play our best and enjoy the game." It was Sze Fei-Izzuddin's second defeat to Seung-jae-Won-ho in three meetings after also coming up second best to the latter in the All-England second round in March. The Malaysians' sole victory over the high-flying Koreans so far came in the Indian Open final in January. Seung-jae-Won-ho have established themselves as the pair to beat this year as they added the Japan Open crown to their titles in the All-England, Malaysian Open, German Open and Indonesian Open. The 27-year-old Seung-jae also gained sweet revenge over Sze Fei-Izzuddin after losing to the latter in the final in Japan last year with former partner Kang Min-hyuk. Sze Fei-Izzuddin, though, can take heart that this is their best showing this year since their triumph at the Indian Open. The pair had made it to their first final since the win in India after failing to reach the last four in all their other outings this year. Sze Fei-Izzuddin are now looking to bounce back quickly in the China Open, which starts tomorrow in Changzhou. The duo are hoping to defend their title in China and snatch back their No. 1 ranking from Seung-jae-Won-ho. "We will prepare ourselves better next time and just focus on ourselves," said Izzuddin.
