Life Skills: How to stay safe around beaches and pools
Swim under an adult's supervision
Remember, always swim where an adult can keep an eye on you. Drowning can occur suddenly and quietly, often with tragic results.
Having responsible adults nearby can make a huge difference. If you are unfortunate enough to face this situation, they can respond quickly in an emergency. This is very important for rescue efforts.
A trusted adult can also provide guidance and instructions on proper swimming techniques.
Wear suitable swimming equipment
Make sure to wear the right swim gear, such as a life jacket, swim goggles and sunscreen. These items are important for your safety.
A life jacket helps you stay afloat, especially in deep or rough waters. Swim goggles protect your eyes and allow you to see more clearly under water. Using a water-resistant sunscreen helps prevent sunburn.
Be cautious of waves and currents
If you are at the beach, watch for warning signs about strong currents and waves. They can change a swimmer's direction quickly and cause confusion. Check the water conditions before getting in and stay aware of your surroundings. Have fun swimming safely!

Here's how you can prepare for typhoon as Wipha heads towards Hong Kong
Tropical Storm Wipha is edging nearer to Hong Kong and is expected to keep intensifying, bringing strong winds and torrential rain. The Post explains how you can prepare for the coming bad weather, with Wipha forecast to be closest to the city on Sunday. 1. What's the situation for domestic helpers? Under local labour laws, domestic helpers are entitled to at least one rest day in every seven-day period. Employers cannot compel them to work on their rest day or offer payment in lieu of granting a statutory holiday. If a helper's scheduled rest day is Sunday, and a typhoon signal is in force, employers should still not require them to report for work even if they choose to stay at home. For helpers who are working, safety should be prioritised and they should not be asked to travel or perform duties that may put them at risk. It is crucial for employers and employees to have clear, prearranged agreements for adverse weather to avoid misunderstandings and ensure safety.

Hong Kong probes fatal work incident involving collapsed iron beam during storm
Hong Kong authorities are investigating whether a contractor involved in a fatal work incident took the necessary precautions during a rainstorm, the city's labour minister has said as he urged employers to ensure a safe work environment under adverse weather. Advertisement Secretary for Labour and Welfare Chris Sun Yuk-han said on Saturday that contractors must exercise 'extra caution' under poor weather, following an industrial incident two days ago in which a worker was killed by a falling iron beam at a site near the border crossing facilities of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. 'Under the law, employers have a statutory duty to ensure a safe environment for workers to work, especially when the weather is bad,' he said. 'If construction work is required during a red rainstorm warning, extra caution must be exercised and preventive measures must be taken. 'Our investigation will also look in this direction, especially whether the employer took sufficient precautions to ensure that the risk of accidents was minimised.' Advertisement The minister urged employers to take precautions, adding that the Labour Department had clear guidelines and would also step up inspections. An investigation into the fatal incident by the department was under way.
