Floodwaters in houses, power cuts trouble Varanasi as Ganga recedes
1 2 3 4 Varanasi: Though water level in Ganga receded below danger level by Thursday evening, thousands of residents were left struggling, especially due to continuous power cuts, flooded home space and back-flowing sewers. The Ganga's water level was 71.35 meters at 4 pm on Thursday , while the receding trend continued at a pace of 2 cm per hour. As the water receded more than half a meter in past 24 hours, many roads like Samneghat and Assi, which had become inundated upstream, were cleared and movement of four-wheelers on the Samneghat-Ramnagar bridge on Ganga was restored. There was no change in the situation in residential colonies in Nagwa area, as well as in localities on the banks of Varuna in Ganga downstream. Ground floor in most of the houses remained marooned while reverse flow of sewage from manholes was evident even on roads like Maqbool Alam Road, Dhelwariya and also in Ganga upstream. In flood-affected areas, district magistrate Stayendra Kumar said though Ganga was receding, normal life was still not restored in 28 wards of the city, hence relief and rescue operations continued. As many as 24 boats are still operating to ensure relief articles reached 4,500 stranded people. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Most Talked-About Bollywood Events of 2025 Learn More Undo Teams of administration, police, NDRF, RAF, and river police are also operating in these wards and 90 affected villages. Before receding, Ganga affected lives of around 8,352 farmers in 90 villages and 8,000 people were displaced in urban areas. The officials expected that people would start returning to home from Friday. The DM said the Varanasi Municipal Corporation, jal-kal and health department were asked to begin drives in the areas from which floodwater was clearing. One medical team is being deployed in each ward to hold camps and provide consultancy and necessary medicines to people. Varanasi Municipal Corporation's teams were active in flood-hit areas by launching cleaning operations and initiating preventive action against infectious diseases. Additional director Dr Aslam Ansari inspected these drives, while Mayor Ashok Tiwari took stock of VMC's exercises in those areas since early morning. They asked officials monitoring the drive in flood-affected areas to ensure silt removal, application of lime, bleaching powder, and fogging as the water recedes. Cleaning, spraying lime, anti-larvae and bleaching powder was being carried out in Pulkoha and Daniyalpur ward areas. Extensive cleaning of roads and ghats was evident in Konia, Shailputri, Jalalipura, Nagwa, Dashashwamedh Ghat, Sheetla Ghat, Assi, Samneghat and other locations. Municipal commissioner Akshat Verma, who was closely monitoring the drive in every flood-affected location, asked for initiating cleaning operations as soon as flood water cleared in more localities. KMC fixes bad roads with patchwork
1 2 3 4 Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has carried out patchwork repairs on several battered roads across the city, including Narkeldanga Main Road and Chingrighata Road, in the past two days. The civic body is also filling up craters with bricks on Muktaram Babu Street and Sarkar Lane near Mechuabazar. "For now, we are carrying out patchwork on the road near ITI. We have decided to repair the stretch with interlocking concrete blocks after Durga Puja. The installation of the concrete blocks involves the closure of the road for cutting and then levelling the surface," the official said. "We have restored most of the battered roads in the city, and are still identifying other pockets that need repairs. We will also level the surface of Park Street near Allen Park, where a cave-in occurred due to a sewer leak last month," the official said. The civic team then started laying the interlocked concrete blocks. A senior official of the roads department said, "We have done patchwork on the battered stretch near Science City. Now, work will start on the northern flank near Milan Mela grounds. The installation of the concrete blocks will take a few days, though the pace of the work depends on the rain." After the approach road of Howrah bridge, this will be the second road that the civic body is repairing with these concrete blocks. Earlier, the mayor held a meeting with officials of the roads department and PWD to discuss ways to make the expense of concrete block installation on a par with routine patchwork undertaken by the civic body earlier. The official indicated that the Bypass stretches near Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, Hiland Park, VIP Bazar, Avishikta crossing, and Ambedkar Bridge — where the civic body has done patchwork — would also be levelled with the interlocking concrete blocks after monsoon. Weather also led to significant damage to houses and crops in the Kharif season. State disaster management minister Irfan Ansari on Thursday held a meeting to review the situation of crop and other damage due to rainfall, which is in excess this monsoon, for an action plan. A total of 2,390 hectares of crop have been damaged, especially in Ranchi, Gumla, Lohardaga, and Simdega. Many houses were damaged due to heavy rain. As per the data, 7,979 kutcha houses suffered partial damage, and 447 were fully damaged. As far as permanent houses are concerned, 208 suffered partial damage and 20 were destroyed in full. The minister also said he has approved the preparation of a mitigation plan for lightning safety in vulnerable areas. "Using technology, we are working out to release timely alerts for lightning as one of the safeguards to save injuries or deaths. It has been decided to conduct surveys in Jamtara, Dumka and Barhait where most lightning cases were reported," he said. Similarly, to curb drowning, it has been decided to train at least two divers from each district, and install iron nets and chains at major waterfalls, Ansari said. The govt has a provision of Rs 4 lakh compensation for disaster-related deaths; in case of road accident fatalities, the amount is a meagre Rs 1 lakh. "I have instructed the department to work towards increasing it to Rs 4 lakh as well," the minister added. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
