Prep talk: Can Alijah Arenas lead Chatsworth to its first Open Division title?
On Tuesday, Chatsworth will honor All-City guard Alijah Arenas with the presentation of his McDonald's All-American Game jersey. More important, though, is what happens beginning Wednesday. Chatsworth enters the City Section Open Division basketball playoffs as the No. 1 seed when hosting Fairfax.
Can Arenas, a USC commit, lead Chatsworth to its first upper division championship in school history?
'We had a nice meeting toward the end of the season and everyone is striving for the same thing,' coach Sam Harris said. 'He's been a tremendous leader, getting guys to play above their level. He's been empowering guys to step up.'
The No. 2 seed is Western League champion Westchester, a 14-time City champion led by Tajh Ariza. The Comets host Birmingham. The best opening game has Coliseum League champion Washington Prep at No. 3-seeded Cleveland. The opening winners will advance to Monday's semifinals at Roybal at 6 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. with the championship game to be played on Feb. 28 at L.A. Southwest College at 8 p.m.
For Open Division girls, top-seeded Hamilton and No. 2-seeded Birmingham, the defending champions, have been the top teams all season. There will be a semifinal doubleheader on Feb. 25 at Venice.

'City fans will love watching him play'
Italian football journalist Nima Tavallaey says "outstanding" new Manchester City signing Tijjani Reijnders has "incredible vision and creativity" and is a "very good signing" as the club look to rebuild after the departure of Kevin de Bruyne. The 26-year-old enjoyed an impressive campaign for AC Milan, scoring 15 goals and registering five assists in all competitions before securing a £46.3m move to Pep Guardiola's side. Advertisement "I think Tijjani Reijnders is a fantastic midfielder," Tavallaey told BBC Radio Manchester. "He's a goalscoring midfielder, a very technical midfielder. "He was probably the only shining light last season in what was essentially just darkness at AC Milan. He was outstanding. "This is a very very good signing for City who are looking to rebuild after the De Bruyne era. "Reijnders is not a physical midfielder, although he can hold his own. He is technical, very dynamic, a great finisher and has incredible vision and creativity. "Given how City play and Guardiola wants to formulate his midfield, I think he will fit in just fine." Advertisement When pushed to identify weaknesses in Reijnders' game, Tavallaey added: "He's not exactly the best at tackling, he's not a ball-winning midfielder like that. "He is very good at pressing and reading the play and if he's got players around him who can help him out with ball-winning then he will really come into his own. "Aerially is not his strongest suit either but overall I think he is a very complete midfielder. He's very creative and attack-minded and I think City fans will absolutely love watching him play." De'Aaron Fox offers injury update
De'Aaron Fox offers injury update originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Last season, before the trade deadline, the San Antonio Spurs added All-Star point guard De'Aaron Fox from the Sacramento Kings, hoping that he would be the long-term running mate for Victor Wembanyama. Advertisement The pair played only five games together, going 2-3, before Wembanyama had his season ended early with a deep vein thrombosis diagnosis in his shoulder. A few weeks later, Fox had his season ended as well, undergoing surgery on his pinkie finger. In 17 games with the Spurs, Fox averaged 19.7 points and 6.8 assists, clearly needing to get used to his new team. He expects to use the offseason to settle into his role with his new teammates and is already playing five-on-five and has been cleared for contact. 'I'm doing well. The surgery went fine,' Fox told The Houston Chronicle. 'I've been cleared, so I played a little five-on-five, and I've done contact stuff, so I'll be ready for next year.' The Spurs gave up Zach Collins, Tre Jones, Sidy Cissoko, and four first-round draft picks to the Kings and Chicago Bulls in a three-team deal to land Fox, although several of those picks had protections on them, and one of them ended up not conveying to the Kings. Advertisement Before the trade, Fox asked the Kings to get a deal done and listed the Spurs as the only acceptable landing spot. With Wembanyama in town, San Antonio has become a premier destination, and Fox got in on the ground floor, expecting the team to find massive success in the next few years.
