LGL: Harbor Creek School District Foundation
This week, Joe Askins of Auto Express wrote a check to the Harbor Creek School District Foundation.
'Harborcreek School District Foundation benefits our staff and students wholeheartedly. Students scholarships are part of that opportunity in the tem fields, field trips. And then our staff benefits from mini-grants that we give out from the foundation and donations from our community,' said Dr. Buckley Cook, superintendent of the Harbor Creek School District.
The foundation was established as a way for the community to become stakeholders in the Harbor Creek School District.
It provides schools with a financial base to fund worthwhile projects that would not normally be funded through the school district's budget. Foundation funding comes from a variety of sources.
'Erie Gives Day is a big one for us, but lots of donations come in throughout the year directly to the foundation,' Dr. Cook said.
This week a check for $250 dollars from Loving Giving Local and Auto Express.
'We know that donation is going to stay right here in the community and it's going to benefit the students of Harborcreeki School District. And that's exactly what Loving Giving Local is all about,' said Joe Askins of Auto Express Resale Center.

The latest car news, reviews, and features. Subscriptions are coming for us all, in every aspect of life, and all we can do is avoid them. That just became a little tougher for owners of Volkswagen's smallest EV, the ID.3, in the U.K. See, we're used to hearing about subscriptions for improved performance and creature comforts on luxury cars, but VW's trialing BMW and Mercedes-Benz's greatest hits of consumer-hostile policies and gating an additional 27 horsepower behind a $22.30 monthly payment on the ID.3. Alternatively, owners can shell out $878 to unlock that power permanently, for the life of the vehicle. This news comes courtesy of AutoExpress , and it's alarming for several reasons. First, again, the ID.3 isn't exactly a bargain, starting at the equivalent of $41,770, but it's also no Mercedes EQE. Second, as the article points out, the car is registered at 228 hp stock, which affects insurance rates, even though owners only get 201 hp before subscribing. So, you're paying a penalty on your insurance premium based on power that you can only access if you give Volkswagen yet more money every month. This monthly fee also lifts torque from the standard 195 lb-ft to 228 lb-ft, and VW says that the increase in output doesn't impact range—so at least there's that. The optional software upgrade applies to all trims of the ID.3 except for the speedy GTX variant, which has around 320 horsepower and costs $21,600 more. All told, that's roughly $63K—for VW's smallest EV! And you thought the Golf R was pricey. The more I learn about this thing, the less sad I am that it's not offered in the States. That's worked to some degree on this side of the pond, with BMW's heated-seat policies. Could Smart Build Another Miata Rival? This Time, It's Electric
When Smart introduced the ForTwo before the world panicked over the Y2K bug, the company realized that it had a platform for a fun sports car. A few years later, the Smart Roadster was born, based on the Fortwo platform but stretched to accommodate the sleek styling. It was meant to revive the love for open-top sports cars in the Old Continent, before bowing out in 2005 after over 43,000 units rolled off its French factory. A Smart Roadster revival would be nice, and apparently, it's entirely possible given that the brand is already preparing a successor to the ForTwo. There's one big catch, though – the Roadster will be entirely different, thanks to Smart's EV-only strategy. In an interview with Auto Express, Smart UK CEO Jason Allbutt was asked if there's a possibility of a new Smart Roadster given the Fortwo's upcoming turn. Albutt recognized the "particularly good fun" that the convertible brought to the table before, and the UK's love of coupes and top-downs. "For a country that has more rain than probably any other European market, we are lovers of coupés and roadsters. So yes, I could see a possibility for such a car in the UK," said Albutt. However, Albutt emphasized that a Roadster revival isn't being planned yet, with the company currently focusing on the Smart #5 SUV and the Smart #6 hatchback. Both vehicles are electric, which follows the brand's strategy. That said, if – and that's a huge IF – Smart proceeds with the revival of the Roadster, it will likely be battery-powered. It also needs to be lightweight and compact to match the original's driving dynamics, while also incorporating the instantaneous pull that EVs are known for. With an electric Mazda MX-5 potentially sitting alongside an ICE-powered Miata – a car like the Smart Roadster would be a worthy rival. However, Albutt also expressed his reservations about an electric roadster. Apart from the sensory open-air feeling, he cited that buyers of roadsters typically open their tops to hear the sound of the engine. Of course, this isn't possible with an electric powertrain, though speed won't be a problem given where electric powertrains are these days. "Maybe there's a new audience that would be looking at [an electric roadster] in a different way. I'm not quite sure yet as to who the buyers of that car really are. Loving Giving Local: Rhoxon Productions
Movie enthusiasts will benefit from this week's Loving Giving Local donation. A local movie production company that sponsors a film festival is this week's recipient. Rhoxon Productions got a financial gift from Auto Express Resale Center. Rhoxon is an Erie-based non-profit independent film company that creates organic stories that promote a positive change. Besides creating art, Rhoxon strives to create jobs and educational opportunities in the film industry. 'Our last few projects have been about healing and about coping, and our next two are about revamping the social justice system,' said Katie Nixon, RhoxonProductions co-founder. 'That's sort of our creative endeavors, and we also create educational opportunities for people to learn how to do this professionally.' Nixon says Rhoxon has a vision of creating 50 new jobs in the film industry here. And she insists you no longer have to be on the East or West Coast to have a film career. 'No, the landscape has changed so much. Even Netflix has created their new studio out in Jersey. It's not just that you have be in New York or LA,' she explained. 'Erie is kinda a really interesting place. You have beach, you have woods, you have city, you have country all within 15 minutes of each other.' That landscape diversity, Nixon said, makes Northwest Pennsylvania the perfect place for shooting movies. This week's Loving Giving Local donation will help support an upcoming film festival. Nixon said, 'We started the only multi-genre film festival here in Erie. It's the Lake Effect Film Festival, which will be in September. So that money will go to help make that event possible.' After making his check presentation, Joe Askins of Auto Express Resale Center said, 'We're pretty fortunate to have Rhoxon in our community and they're already doing great things. So for us to be able to deliver loving giving local and to learn the donation we bring is going toward their film festival, that's what Loving Giving Local is all about,' Askins said.
