3 police officers injured in ambush shooting in Ohio, officials say
Elyria Police Chief James Welsh told reporters officers on patrol were ambushed by a man firing a high-powered rifle. Officers returned fire, he said.
He said it is unclear if the suspect, a 28-year-old man from Lorain whom Welsh did not name, was killed by the officers or shot himself. Welsh said the man is believed to have acted alone.
"This was an ambush situation" on River Bend Drive about 1 p.m., Welsh said. Details about a possible motive were not disclosed. "At this point, we can confirm that he's a lone gunman."
Lorain Mayor Jack Bradley said in a phone interview that Lorain officers will get counseling to help process the shooting of their colleagues.
The wounded officers' names were not immediately released. Two officers were flown to a trauma center, while the third was initially treated at Mercy Health-Lorain Hospital, Bradley said.
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said on Wednesday that he was briefed on the shooting. In a post on X, he said it "appears to have been a targeted attack on law enforcement."
State Rep. Joe Miller said he is "praying for the quick and full recovery" of the injured officers in a post on X
"My thoughts are also with the families of the officers in this difficult moment. I thank our brave law enforcement officials who acted to protect Lorain," the lawmaker posted to the social media site.

Wall Street Journal Delivers Reality Check To MAGA: ‘Maybe Hold The Euphoria'
The Wall Street Journal on Monday urged caution among Donald Trump supporters who are all whipped up over his sweeping new tariffs on imports from other countries. In an op-ed titled 'The Trump Economy Stumbles,' the newspaper's conservative-leaning board said the 'triumphalism is palpable in MAGA land.' 'But maybe hold the euphoria, as this week's reports on jobs and the economy suggest the new golden age may take a while to appear,' it warned. The board pointed to sluggish hiring, a stalled (promised) revival in U.S. manufacturing and a shrinking foreign-born workforce ― fueled by the Trump administration's immigration crackdown ― as signs of trouble. While it acknowledged it's difficult to pinpoint the exact impact of Trump's on-off-on-off tariff hikes, it argued the uncertainty it caused is also likely to blame. Boy, 11, drowns after becoming stuck in muddy excavation pit
An 11-year-old Free State boy drowned at a construction site in Odendaalsrus while swimming with two friends on Saturday afternoon. 'Odendaalsrus police were summoned to a scene of a drowning at Kutlwanong. On arrival at the scene, members were informed that three boys aged between 10 and 11 were allegedly swimming inside an excavation filled with wastewater,' police spokesperson Sergeant Palesa Thabana said. They became stuck in mud inside the pit. 'Two of the boys, aged 10, managed to get out, while the 11-year-old victim got stuck in the mud and ultimately drowned,' Thabana said. 'The Welkom SAPS diving unit, under the command of Sergeant Arno Cronje, was called to the scene. Together with Matjhabeng fire department members, they retrieved the deceased body from the sewage dump on Saturday evening at about 20:20.' In an unrelated incident in November last year, Vista reported that a 14-year-old boy drowned in a quarry of water filled with sewage in Meloding, Virginia. The boy's friends told the police that a group of them had been swimming in the quarry when one of them drowned. Matjhabeng municipality employees were deployed to drain the sewage. The boy's body was found stuck in mud inside the quarry.
