Rekha Gupta Marks 100 Days As Delhi Chief Minister, Highlights Policy Push
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said her dispensation was all about honest governance, public welfare, and structural reforms, as she accused the previous government of civic neglect, on Saturday, marking 100 days of her coming to power.
Speaking at a public programme at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Ms Gupta emphasised that her administration had laid focus on policy formulation, rather than making "false promises."
"My government spent 100 days in making policies and working for the betterment of Delhi," she said, adding, "We can't make false promises. We are working honestly to solve issues like the cleaning of the Yamuna and removal of garbage dumps."
Ms Gupta also revealed her plan to introduce an ordinance to regulate the private school fees.
"Education should be accessible and fair. We are committed to ensuring that no parent is burdened unfairly," she said.
The Chief Minister dubbed as successful her government's Vaya Vandana scheme, which offers citizens aged 70 and above health insurance coverage of up to Rs 10 lakh. "Around 1.5 lakh registrations have already been completed," she said.
The BJP leader also trained her guns at the previous Aam Aadmi Party-led government, and said, "Thousands joined the movement hoping for change, but the people who claimed to have no hunger for power became consumed by it. The public's trust was broken." "How can the national capital be the most polluted when cleaning the Yamuna was never even considered seriously?" she said.
This is Bharatiya Janata Party's first stint in the state after 27 years.
In the February Assembly elections, the BJP secured 48 out of 70 seats, ending a decade of AAP's governance.

Acquisition of another 97 Tejas, 6 AEW&C aircraft gets CCS nod
New DELHI: India on Tuesday gave the final nod for acquisition of another 97 indigenous Tejas fighter jets and six advanced airborne early-warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft or "eyes in the sky", collectively worth around Rs 85,500 crore, which will be crucial to tackle the collusive and 'fused' challenge from China-Pakistan in the years ahead. The PM-led cabinet committee on security (CCS) approved the Rs 66,500 crore deal for 97 "improved" Tejas Mark-1A fighters to be produced by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), which will add to the 83 such single-engine light combat aircraft already ordered from defence PSU under a Rs 46,898 crore deal inked in Feb 2021, top sources told TOI. "The first two jets of the 83 ordered earlier are fully ready. The final weapons firing trials (including Astra air-to-air missiles) are slated for Sept. With the order for another 97 jets, HAL will be able to expand and stabilise its supply chains," a source said. "All six AEW&C aircraft will be delivered by 2033-34," the source said. The new AEW&C project will involve the A-321 narrow-body aircraft first being "hardened and modified" in Spain and then being equipped with an antenna in the nose in addition to the main dorsal antenna to give 300-degree radar coverage. To make up numbers, defence ministry in March also accorded the initial "acceptance of necessity" to a separate project for six Netra Mark-1A on Embraer-145 jets, with more advanced technologies than the first three Mark-1 aircraft. On the Tejas front, IAF till now has got 38 of the first 40 Tejas Mark-1 fighters ordered for Rs 8,802 crore under two contracts inked in 2006 and 2010.

SC curbs Kerala governor's authority in VC selection, empowers CM
T'puram: The order passed by the Supreme Court on Monday to resolve the impasse over the selection and appointment of vice-chancellors (VC) at Kerala Technological University and Kerala University of Digital Sciences has turned out to be a huge setback for the governor. SC decided not to include the UGC nominee in the search committee and empowered the chief minister with unprecedented authority to decide candidates. As per the order, the search committee, headed by a retired SC judge, must share the details of shortlisted candidates with the CM, who will recommend them to the chancellor, in order of preference, for appointment as VCs. The chancellor shall then appoint VCs from the empanelled names, following the CM's recommended order of preference. If the chancellor has reservations against empanelled candidates or against the CM's remarks on shortlisted candidates, he can put forth his opinion on file, supported by reasons and relevant material, the SC order said. The order said that the chancellor shall give approval—except in case of a difference of opinion—within two weeks of receiving the file from the CM. "The department of higher education, Government of Kerala or any other department concerned of the state govt are hereby directed to notify the appointment within one week from the date of receipt of approval from the chancellor of the university," it said. Until now, the chancellor was the appointing authority and the order was issued from Raj Bhavan. "In cases where the CM has objected to the inclusion of any name in the panel and such objection is not acceptable to the chancellor or where the chancellor has an objection against the empanelment of any particular name for which he has assigned his own reasons, all such files shall be put up before this court. The apex court appointed former SC judge Sudhanshu Dhulia as chairperson of the search-cum-selection committee for both universities and ordered that he be paid an honorarium of Rs 3 lakh for every day of the committee's proceedings until completion. The state shall also provide him with a suitable office, full secretarial assistance, transit accommodation and reimburse his business-class air travel expenses.
