L.A. Times recognized in L.A. Press Club's Southern California Journalism Awards
In all, The Times took home 40 awards, including 19 first-place awards, 12 second-place honors and 9 third-place awards, across multiple categories. In addition, Times columnist Bill Plaschke received the 2025 Joseph M. Quinn Award for Lifetime Achievement.
'I am humbled and honored to receive an award named after the great Joe Quinn, a legendary reporter and editor who truly embraced journalism's enduring connection to the community,' said Plaschke. 'I have never written a word in the past 38 years that has not been shaped and supported by the wonderful staff at the L.A. Times, past and present, and I will be forever grateful for their strength.'
Plaschke has been a sports columnist at The Times since 1996, and he continues to be a voice for Los Angeles sports fans. He has been named national Sports Columnist of the Year nine times by the Associated Press and was the 2024 recipient of the prestigious Red Smith Award, which is considered to be one of the most prestigious honors in sports journalism. Plaschke is the author of six books and, up until recently, was a panelist on the popular ESPN daily talk show 'Around the Horn,' which ended in May after a 23-year run.
'Bill Plaschke is part of the fabric of Los Angeles and one of the most respected sports journalists in the country, ' Los Angeles Press Club President Danny Bakewell Jr. said in a news release.

Shannon Sharpe settles $50 million lawsuit with woman who accused him of rape
A $50-million lawsuit that accused Shannon Sharpe of rape has been settled. Attorney Tony Buzbee, whose firm represented a Jane Doe, who filed the civil lawsuit against the retired NFL star and sports media personality earlier this year, announced the settlement on Friday afternoon in a statement posted on Instagram. 'After protracted and respectful negotiations, I'm pleased to announce that we have reached a mutually agreed upon resolution,' Buzbee wrote. 'All matters have now been addressed satisfactorily, and the matter is closed. The lawsuit will thus be dismissed with prejudice.' Sharpe's legal team confirmed to The Times that a settlement had been reached and that Buzbee's statement should be considered the 'final word' on the matter. According to the lawsuit, filed on April 20 in Clark County, Nev., Sharpe and his accuser met at a Los Angeles gym in 2023, when he was 54 and she was 20. They ended up having 'a rocky consensual relationship that lasted nearly two years,' the lawsuit stated. Sharpe's accuser sought damages for claims of assault, sexual assault, battery, sexual battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress after multiple alleged non-consensual sexual encounters in her Las Vegas apartment between October and January. Sharpe has denied the allegations. One of his attorneys, Lanny J. Davis, told reporters in April that Sharpe had offered his accuser 'at least $10 million' to settle the case in mediation, but the offer was declined. Days after the lawsuit was filed, Sharpe announced that he was temporarily stepping away from his duties as a commentator on ESPN's 'First Take' but would return in time for the 2025 NFL season. Sharpe has remained on his popular podcasts 'Club Shay Shay' and 'Nightcap.'

The Tiny Home Construction Contest Is a Big Deal in This Texas Town
The plumber, the mason, the electrician and the carpenter arrived a full hour early to collect their blueprints. They had two days in June to build an eight-foot by 10-foot tiny home inside the convention center in downtown Atlanta. They knew little else about their assignment, but they were anxious to get started. And they were ready to win. The four-person crew, all students at Belton High School in Belton, Texas, were defending the school's title as the reigning national champions of mock tiny home construction. Every year, around 6,700 students participate in roughly 115 trade contests like auto mechanics, baking, cosmetology and robotics at the SkillsUSA Championships. In Belton, a town of open fields and highways halfway between Waco and Austin, the prize for home construction could make the students stars. The teens could get a segment on the local television station, a spread in the front of the yearbook, a giant banner strung up in the high school wood shop and attention from local and national homebuilders who scout their school and the convention for talent. Belton High was the winningest in the 23-year history of the national TeamWorks contest, taking the top prize three times, including last year. But those boys had graduated and the new crew had never competed at this level. And yet, the new team — the plumber Joseph Fuentes, the mason Bryson Necessary, the electrician Erik Schiller and the carpenter Jack Clark — knew that winning was expected. They could sense it from their coach when he said things like, 'You've got to be on your A game — like a boxer.' Former ESPN star Trey Wingo rips what network has become
Former ESPN host Trey Wingo is not particularly pleased with the present-day programming on the network. Responding to a complaint that 'you used to be able to turn on ESPN and not see Stephen A. Smith or Pat McAfee,' the former 'NFL Primetime' host agreed that the Worldwide Leader's direction isn't one he's on board with. 'Let me preface this by saying I have so many wonderful memories and so many great friends still working there that I want to succeed,' Wingo wrote on X on Tuesday. 'But he's right. AP Wingo was a part of ESPN from 1997 up until 2020, and in recent years has watched flagship shows like 'Around the Horn' and 'Outside the Lines' get canceled and replaced by Smith and McAfee as centerpieces of network programming. At the time of writing, ESPN produces four talk shows, with half featuring McAfee and Smith. That's down from 2017, when the network produced seven of those types of programs. What's clear, however, is that ESPN has changed its tack and it's all-in on its current stars, whether the old guard likes it or not.
