Gary Lineker dealt extra blow after early BBC exit in antisemitism row
Gary Lineker has reportedly been dealt an extra blow after his shock exit from the BBC. The presenter had stood down from his duties on Match Of The Day and was expected to host the World Cup coverage.
He will now present his final show at the weekend after his now-deleted Instagram post was criticised as anti-Semitic. He shared a post from the group Palestine Lobby, illustrated with a picture of a rat, which prompted calls for him to be sacked from the Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA).
Now it has been confirmed that Gary is standing down from his role with the BBC and his last episode of Match of The Day will be this weekend, and he will not present the World Cup coverage either.
Tim Davie, BBC Director-General, said of the decision ahead of Gary's final show: "Gary has acknowledged the mistake he made. Accordingly, we have agreed he will step back from further presenting after this season.
"Gary has been a defining voice in football coverage for the BBC for over two decades. His passion and knowledge have shaped our sports journalism and earned him the respect of sports fans. We want to thank him for the contribution he has made."
Gary Lineker also issued a stement, where he said stepping back felt like the "responsible course of action".
" Football has been at the heart of my life for as long as I can remember – both on the pitch and in the studio. I care deeply about the game, and about the work I've done with the BBC over many years," he said.
"As I've said, I would never consciously repost anything anti-Semitic – it goes against everything I stand for. However, I recognise the error and upset that I caused, and reiterate how sorry I am. Stepping back now feels like the responsible course of action."
However, it has now been revealed that Gary will face a second blow. It seems as though the licensing deal for the Goalhanger titles, The Rest Is Football and The Rest Is History, will also end this year.
An email sent to BBC Sport staff was also revealed shortly after his departure was announced. Alex Kay-Jelski, the director of sport, wrote to staff: "You will have seen in the past few minutes that Gary Lineker will be leaving the BBC at the end of the current football season... I appreciate the last week has been difficult and emotional for many of you. Thank you for all the messages and conversations, even if some of them weren't easy to have. And I hope you understand that I had to wait until now to tell you the news.
"It is sad to be saying goodbye to such a brilliant broadcaster and I also want to thank Gary for his years of service. As ever, if you have questions, you know where I am. Let's finish the season strongly with Gary's final show, enjoy an incredible summer of sport and look forward with excitement to what lies ahead."

Katie Price's defiant post about motherhood after denying 'rift' with Princess Andre
Katie Price has shared a quote about parenthood following the launch of her daughter Princess Andre's reality TV show, which she had previously said that she wouldn't watch A post about motherhood has been shared by Katie Price this week amid speculation over her relationship with her eldest daughter Princess Andre. It comes following the launch of the Princess Diaries over the weekend. Katie, 47, has claimed she wasn't allowed to appear in the ITV show, which follows Princess, 18, who's the youngest of her two children with her ex-husband Peter Andre, 52. She's also criticised the teenager's management for not "allowing" her to guide her daughter in her career. READ MORE: Katie Price worries fans with appearance in family photo after explaining weight loss Katie shared a post about being a mother, which had been uploaded by the page INEX Digital Wealth on Instagram, with her followers on the platform this afternoon. It appeared to be titled: "Your mom is not your enemy." It read: "She may not always say things the way you want to hear them, but her heart is always in the right place. She's the one who worries when you're hurting, prays when you're lost, and stands by you even when the world doesn't." The post shared by Katie concluded: "She's not trying to control you. She's trying to protect you. She may not be perfect, but she's the only woman in this world who truly wants what's best for you, even if it costs her everything." Princess is the third eldest of Katie's five children. Her family also includes Junior Andre, 20, who is the eldest of her two kids with Peter, and eldest son Harvey Price, 23. It comes after the Princess Diaries launched last night. Katie had previously said that she wouldn't be watching it and expressed her disappointment over her apparent lack of involvement with her eldest daughter's career to date. As previously reported, she said on an episode of the Katie Price Show podcast that she had offered to take part in the reality TV show 'for free' but was turned down. Katie said she's "very upset" that Princess' career is being managed by her ex-husband Peter's management, the CAN Group, who she alleged consider Katie to be "trash". Katie said on the podcast: "Princess is taking that same path [as I did in my career] – trying to do the same as what I've done – which I absolutely love and adore of Princess but I have not been allowed to go on any photoshoot, no signings or Superdrug openings or anything like that. Why? Because I'm not allowed and I'm not welcome." And dismissing rumours of a rift between the mother and daughter, Katie said: "Me and Princess have never, ever, ever had an argument to this day or a disagreement. We get on like best friends, mother and daughter. Princess lives with me and she stays at her dad's. Now, she's been staying at her dad's the past two months because she's been filming her show. And our personal life together is amazing." As reported last night, Princess spoke about her mother in the first episode of her show and said that she's like a "best friend". She's quoted as having said in a scene: "Me and my mum now, we're so close. We're like best friends." In a statement, Princess' management later responded to Katie's criticism. The CAN Group told the Mirror recently: "As a company, our duty of care to our clients is paramount. We would never advise a client on their personal life unless asked and we have never stopped anyone seeing their families."

Strictly star Alex Kingston's heartbreak before finding love with TV presenter
Strictly star Alex Kingston's heartbreak before finding love with TV presenter The Doctor Who actress has been announced as one of the stars taking part in Strictly Come Dancing 2025. Strictly Come Dancing contestant Alex Kingston endured a turbulent romantic history before discovering happiness with her current husband. The Doctor Who star, 62, has joined the upcoming series of the popular BBC dancing show as she gets ready to showcase her moves on the ballroom floor. She won over Doctor Who enthusiasts after securing the part of River Song, with her character featuring during David Tennant, Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi's tenures on the science fiction programme. Her television work has included appearances in American medical series ER, costume dramas The Fortunes and Misfortunes of Moll Flanders, Arrow and A Discovery of Witches. Alex Kingston is getting ready to put her dancing shoes on (Image: BBC) Alex has been open about her enthusiasm for Strictly, revealing in 2019: "Sarah Hadland and I talked about how much we'd like to do Strictly Come Dancing. Then I discovered she's a trained ballet dancer. 'Hang on a minute! That's not fair!' So, I can't do it on a season when she is on it!" Beyond her screen work, Alex has experienced considerable romantic disappointment. She first met Oscar-nominated performer Ralph Fiennes at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1983. The pair married ten years later, though their relationship ended catastrophically when Ralph became involved with a woman 18 years his senior. Alex previously reflected: "We were like strangers – very fragile," reports the Mirror. "His mother was dying and somehow we thought the wedding was going to heal everything. But that was crazy, of course." Ralph Fiennes and Alex met in the 80s (Image: Ron Galella Collection via Getty Images) In 1995, Ralph starred in Hamlet at Hackney Empire opposite Francesca Annis-who played Gertrude, his character's mother. Despite the age gap, their affair led to him leaving Alex and confessing his love for Francesca. Ralph, aged 32 at the time, embarked on a romance with Francesca, then 50. Francesca, who has three kids with photographer Patrick Wiseman, reportedly left him for the actor. Alex revealed the depth of her emotional struggle post-divorce to the Daily Mail, saying: "I was feeling worthless, that I would never find anyone else as good as my husband, which is ridiculous, but I had so little self-esteem. "Divorce is awful but it is also something I don't regret happening to me because it has shaped who I am now." Their relationship came to an end after an affair (Image: NY Daily News via Getty Images) Ralph and Francesca dated for 10 years between 1997 and 2006 and hit back at age gap concerns. "Of course I don't spend days agonising over the age difference. How can I? There is nothing I can do about it," she once said. "Ralph and I have been together ten years now so, whatever happens, we have had a very good, different relationship and an interesting time." Their relationship crumbled following explosive claims of infidelity when Romanian singer Corneila Crisan alleged she had conducted a two-year affair with Ralph. Alex has suffered her fair share of heartbreak (Image:for Pragnell) The following day, Ralph and Francesca announced their separation, stating: "Miss Annis confirms today that she and Ralph Fiennes are to separate." Ralph's affair had a devastating impact on Alex, who confessed to contemplating suicide. She later married German writer Florian Haertel and they welcomed a daughter, Salome, in 2001. However, the couple separated in 2009 and finalised their divorce four years later. Fortunately, Alex has found love again and is now married to TV presenter Jonathan Stamp, with the couple tying the knot in Italy in 2015. Article continues below Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One later this year.
