Lions aim to end disappointing URC season on a high against Ospreys

The Lions will close out their underwhelming United Rugby Championship (URC) campaign this weekend with little more than pride at stake, as a disappointing season ends against the Ospreys at Ellis Park.
Saturday's clash (kick-off 5.15pm) is a dead rubber.
The Joburgers cannot break into the Top 10 — unlike previous seasons when they finished ninth and narrowly missed the quarter-finals — and victory for either side will have no bearing on the teams above them jostling for play-off placements.
It's a mediocre conclusion to a campaign that once held much promise. Back in late September, the Lions won four consecutive games and were considered dark horses. But in the 13 matches that followed, they managed just three more wins.
It's a tough situation — largely self-inflicted — especially considering the talent within the squad. Costly home defeats and a repeated failure to close out tight contests have left a sombre and frustrating tone among the Lions faithful.
Lions assistant coach Julian Redelinghuys echoed those frustrations but remained optimistic about the group's potential.
'We are very disappointed in how the season has turned out,' said the former Springbok prop on Wednesday, during a media briefing. 'Especially after a good start.
'Inconsistency killed us. We didn't look after the small things.
'I still have no doubt about the potential of this group of players. I believe these players are machines, I believe these players are ysters (exceptional). We were just not consistent enough — individually or collectively. We can't then expect to be in the play-offs.
'We would have liked to be sitting here already qualified. We had the potential to do that. I have no doubt that the guys will want to finish off on a high note this weekend and lay a platform for next season.'

Lions cult figure Asenathi Ntlabakanye agreed with the assessment, saying: 'We had a vision of being in the Top 8 and breaking into the Champions Cup.
'It is something that we haven't managed to do since the URC started, and to fall short of that is very disappointing. Throughout the season, we were up and down. Going forward, we need to find a way to be consistent and to perform week in and week out.
'This coming weekend is an opportunity to send some guys off on a high note and to play some good rugby — Lions rugby — which we've not done over the past two or three weeks.'
Among those departing after the weekend are Springbok Edwill van der Merwe and former captain Marius Louw.
Beating the Ospreys won't shift the Lions' standing in the URC, but it will offer a glimpse into the team's mental state heading into the off-season.
This unit will play a significant role in the upcoming Currie Cup, which now takes on added importance, and it will form the foundation for the next URC campaign, where few to no excuses will be accepted should failure come knocking again.

Sibisi grateful for Broos' support as he prepares to captain Bafana
Nkosinathi Sibisi has embraced his leadership role with Bafana Bafana, thanking coach Hugo Broos for his faith ahead of Tuesday's friendly against Mozambique. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Bafana Bafana stand-in captain Nkosinathi Sibisi is grateful to coach Hugo Broos for standing by him during times of scrutiny regarding his national team call-ups. Sibisi has been one of the ever-present players in the national team set-up since Broos took the reins more than four years ago. However, his selections were not always based on form, as he was often in and out of the Orlando Pirates defensive unit due to injuries, poor form and suspensions. Broos admitted that it was not easy to continue selecting Sibisi when he was not playing regularly, but believed his presence and natural skillset remained valuable to the team. Fortunately for the Belgian coach, his faith has recently been rewarded. Sibisi featured prominently for Pirates this past season, missing only three Premiership matches. Next Stay Close ✕ As a result, Broos named him one of the temporary captains for the current international window, alongside Fawaaz Basadien, stepping in for regular captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. Basadien captained the team in the first international friendly against Tanzania at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane last Friday, which ended in a goalless draw. Sibisi, meanwhile, is set to lead the side against Mozambique in another friendly at the same venue on Tuesday at 7.30pm, and he is thankful to Broos for his continued belief. 'It's a privilege and an honour for me,' said Sibisi, who is also vice-captain at Pirates. 'I'd like to thank the coach for showing confidence in me. We have been together since the very first camp he started. 'There were question marks at times whenever I was here. So, to be able to lead the team tomorrow (tonight) will be a huge honour for me.' Khulumani Ndamane shares the emotions he felt on Friday when he made his Bafana Bafana debut against Tanzania and also won Man of the Match.#BafanaPride@SABC_Sport — Bafana Bafana (@BafanaBafana) June 8, 2025 Sibisi has formed a solid partnership with youngster Mbekezeli Mbokazi at centre-back for Pirates after the latter was promoted to the senior team by coach José Riveiro. That partnership is set to continue at international level, as Broos confirmed in a pre-match press conference that the duo could start together against the Mambas. 'I've played with Mbokazi at club level, so it won't be any different in the national team,' Sibisi said. 'He's a very humble boy, and he takes instructions well. So, it's very easy for me to play alongside him. I don't think it'll be a big adjustment for him. As the coach has mentioned, it might be a perfect choice for me to partner him – to give him guidance and the confidence to take his chance.' Including Sibisi and Mbokazi, there are six other Pirates players in the current Bafana squad, making up the largest contingent from any club. However, the 23-member squad selected for the two friendlies has gelled well, with no signs of division along club lines. 'The camaraderie is key. I think everyone is playing their part – regardless of whether it's guys from Pirates or Stellies. When we come together, we are representing Bafana,' Sibisi said. 'We have to put that aside and play as one. We know that if we play as one, there's a better chance of us winning the game ahead of us.' Sibisi is also in camp with some of the defenders – Basadien and Thabo Moloisane (both from Stellenbosch) – who could be his rivals for the PSL Defender of the Season award. 'The guys you've mentioned are really top, top players. Fawaaz and Thabo have been doing well for Stellenbosch,' Sibisi said. 'It's always nice when we meet. There's no sort of competition between us. We just try to do the best we can for our clubs and hope that is rewarded. 'As for the Defender of the Season award, we'll just let God take His way. If it is meant to be, then it will be. If not, we will just continue.'

Injured Scotland prop Fagerson out of Lions tour
Scotland prop Zander Fagerson has been ruled out of the British and Irish Lions' tour to Australia with a calf injury, head coach Andy Farrell announced on Monday. The Glasgow Warriors tighthead will be replaced in the squad by Ireland international Finlay Bealham. The squad, minus those involved in next weekend's Premiership Rugby and United Rugby Championship finals, are due to fly to Portugal for a training camp on Tuesday. England pair Jamie George and Asher Opoku-Fordjour will also join the group. "It's tough on Zander to miss out so close to the tour, but now Finlay gets an opportunity to come in and add to the group," said Farrell. "This is unfortunately part and parcel of the game, so we always have to be prepared for that. "But it's great to be finally at the stage where we can get onto the training ground and get to work with these players." The Lions, captained by England skipper Maro Itoje, face Argentina in Dublin on June 20 before starting their tour of Australia, which includes three Tests against the Wallabies.

Jake White on ‘underdogs' Bulls' URC final challenge
Jake White says the Vodacom Bulls are holding a 'lotto ticket' going into Saturday's URC final against Leinster at Croke Park, and is banking on his senior players to make it count. The Bulls face a formidable Leinster side playing its first URC decider, coming off a big win over defending champions Glasgow. The two top-ranked teams in the league stage this season, the Herd boast a 4-2 record against the Irish giants in the competition, including a historic Dublin semi-final win and back-to-back Loftus Versfeld victories. White's troops left the Republic yesterday, and were scheduled to hold a recovery session in the Irish capital today as they target a maiden URC title. Also read: URC REWIND: Bulls vs Leinster 'The wonderful thing for us is that we have a lotto ticket,' said White. 'You can't win the lotto if you don't have a ticket. We have a 50% chance of winning on Saturday. That's how sport works. 'We have to travel to play an international team. It is going to be like Ireland versus the Bulls. I'm not underplaying it,' he added. 'Ireland have beaten the All Blacks and many big teams. So we have to work hard; get things to work in our favour; recover well from bumps and bruises. Then we have to play very well. 'Look at what Leinster did to Glasgow and look at what Glasgow did to us last year. They did not struggle to beat Glasgow and will be on a high now going into a final at home.' The Bulls will contest their third URC final in four seasons, but White insists that history holds little value this week. 'It is all immaterial. It is now a final,' the veteran coach added. 'For both sides it is a completely different challenge. It doesn't matter that we beat them last year in a knockout game. Read more: Lethal Leinster out to bulldoze Bulls 'I'm glad because the whole of Dublin will be rugby crazy. Our young players will experience something unique and special. I will work hard for the guys to enjoy it and be ready. People travel the world to hopefully see the underdogs win. That is what happens in sport.' White is leaning on the experience of his Rugby World Cup-winning Springboks to guide the squad through the week. 'We need our senior guys who have been there and done it to impart their knowledge. We have Willie le Roux who has won a [Rugby] World Cup, so has Marco van Staden and Canan Moodie. We also have guys who have played in finals. I want them to talk to each other about what works, and what doesn't.' The post Jake on 'underdogs' Bulls' final challenge appeared first on SA Rugby magazine.
