Riyadh pavilion showcases Saudi literary, cultural diversity at Argentina book fair
Running from April 22 to May 12, the event features the Kingdom's capital as guest of honor, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
Riyadh's selection highlights the city's growing role in the global cultural scene, as well as its commitment to fostering dialogue, embracing diversity, and using culture as a bridge for human connection and knowledge exchange.
Saudi delegation includes representatives from the Theater and Performing Arts Commission, the Heritage Commission, and the Ministry of Islamic Affairs.
The King Fahd Glorious Qur'an Printing Complex, King Abdulaziz Foundation for Research and Archives, King Salman Global Academy for Arabic Language, King Abdulaziz Public Library, and King Fahad National Library are also taking part.
The Riyadh pavilion boosts Saudi cultural presence in Latin America, presenting the capital as a model of civilization aligned with Vision 2030. It features diverse literary and cultural content, including Spanish translations to foster cross-cultural understanding.
The launch was attended by Literature Commission CEO Abdullatif Alwasel, Buenos Aires Chief of Government Jorge Macri, Minister of Culture Gabriela Ricardes, and Fundacion El Libro President Christian Rainone.
During the fair, the Heritage Commission will highlight the richness of Saudi cultural heritage through global promotion and awareness efforts.
Its program includes live artisan demonstrations, panel discussions, and displays of archaeological replicas, along with publications documenting the Kingdom's cultural legacy.
The King Salman Global Academy for Arabic Language is showcasing recent publications, including scientific books and research journals, emphasizing its role in enhancing linguistic knowledge.
It also highlights its work in language planning, computational linguistics, education, and cultural initiatives, alongside digital projects and tools.
The academy promotes Arabic publishing in new regions, encourages cultural and linguistic diversity, and fosters collaboration with communities interested in Arab culture.

Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale 2026 to open Jan. 30 with expanded curatorial team
RIYADH — The Diriyah Biennale Foundation has announced the appointment of an expanded curatorial team and the official opening date for the third edition of the Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale, which will begin on Jan. 30, 2026. Led by Artistic Directors Nora Razian and Sabih Ahmed, the curatorial team reflects the Biennale's growing ambition to bridge Saudi Arabia's rapidly evolving cultural scene with global artistic discourse. Razian is the Deputy Director and Head of Exhibitions and Programmes at Art Jameel, while Ahmed is a curator and educator who serves as Projects Advisor at the Ishara Art Foundation. Joining them are international curators Maan Abu Taleb, May Makki, Kabelo Malatsie, and Lantian Xie. Milan-based architect Sammy Zarka has also been named Associate Architect and Exhibition Designer. The Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale 2026 will again take place in the JAX District of Diriyah, a creative and cultural hub west of Riyadh. The event will extend into newly opened venues within the district, further activating its industrial heritage spaces and building on the success of the 2022 and 2024 editions, which drew more than 340,000 visitors combined. Aya Al-Bakree, CEO of the Diriyah Biennale Foundation, said the diverse curatorial backgrounds — from music and literature to performance and architecture — signal the Biennale's commitment to cross-disciplinary exchange. 'This curatorial team brings together a wide range of voices shaped by different disciplines,' said Al-Bakree. 'Their experience demonstrates the evolving role of contemporary art as a space of exchange, and I hope this opens new pathways for artists and audiences in Saudi Arabia.' The 2026 edition will feature new commissions and works by artists from Saudi Arabia and around the world, inviting dialogue on the role of contemporary art in a nation undergoing rapid transformation. About the Curators Maan Abu Taleb is co-founder of the Arabic music platform Ma3azef and a novelist and essayist whose works have explored the intersections of sound, politics, and identity. May Makki previously served with the Museum of Modern Art in New York and has held research and curatorial roles at MoMA PS1, Mathaf in Doha, and Columbia University's Wallach Art Gallery. Kabelo Malatsie is the former director of Kunsthalle Bern and has curated international exhibitions including the Yokohama Triennale and the Sharjah Biennial. Lantian Xie's diverse artistic practice spans installations, performances, and collaborative projects that have been presented at the Venice Biennale, Dhaka Art Summit, and Centre Pompidou. Sammy Zarka is an architect and lecturer at Milan's Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti. Riyadh to Host Free Cultural Event to Celebrate 70th Anniversary of Saudi-Japan Diplomatic Relations
Riyadh will mark the 70th anniversary of Saudi-Japan diplomatic relations with a special Japan Festival on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, according to Arab News. Set to take place at Riyadh's Cultural Palace, the two-day free event will feature Japanese culture through several traditional performances, hands-on workshops, tourism experiences, as well as corporate booths. Interestingly, the event will host a special performance of traditional Japanese theater as part of the festivities. In February, Ambassador of Japan to Saudi Arabia Yasunari Morino celebrated the nation's 70 years of ties with the Kingdom in collaboration with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's Capt. Therefore, the event played a pivotal role in deepening the ties between the JMSDF and the Royal Saudi Naval Forces. He also noted that it stands as a testament to the friendly relations between the two countries.' Madinah Award Foundation Unveils New Arts Competition to Celebrate Region's Legacy
The Madinah Award Foundation has announced the launch of the first-ever Madinah Arts Award to foster the artistic scene in the region, according to the Saudi Press Agency. With submissions open until September 30, the award seeks to elevate the cultural profile of Madinah by supporting visual arts in the region. Moreover, it aims to boost intellectual and cultural development, promote the visual arts sector, empower artists to achieve their goals, as well as ignite the spirit of competition. Therefore, it will play a pivotal role in reflecting the transformative role of art in Madinah's society. Notably, the inaugural 2025 edition will focus on 'graphic art.' Through innovative styles, submissions must creatively highlight Madinah's religious, historical, cultural, civilizational, economic, social, and heritage significance. Saudi visual artists as well as residents of the Kingdom are eligible to participate in the award, requiring them to be at least 18 years old.
