Malaysia, Singapore explore GovTech, housing, public sector reform
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia and Singapore are now exploring strategic cooperation in three main areas – GovTech, public housing and public sector reform – to strengthen public service delivery. Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said these were the main areas of collaboration identified during his three-day official working visit to Singapore last Friday. "We want to learn from Singapore. Firstly, in regard to GovTech, as they have already implemented it, while we are in the process of launching our own. "Secondly, their affordable housing through the Singapore Housing Board. And thirdly, we want to learn about reforms in the public service," he said. He was speaking to reporters after launching the Association of Former Students of Mara Junior Science Colleges (Ansara) Sports Carnival 2025 here today. Shamsul Azri said Singapore welcomed the cooperation and exchange of best practices between the two countries to improve the quality of public service. "Singapore welcomed our proposals… we also had sessions with them to discuss strategic cooperation between the Malaysian government and the Singaporean government," he added. Earlier, in his speech, he urged Malaysians to adopt a healthy lifestyle through sports and good nutrition. Citing Singapore as an example, he said their average life expectancy is 84 years, compared to about 73 to 74 years in Malaysia. "We must remember that prevention is better than cure. KLANG : PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has downplayed a prominent religious scholar's call for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's administration to remain until the end of its term, describing it as a personal opinion. Tuan Ibrahim said Sheikh Wazir Che Awang Al-Makki Hafizahullah, who is the deputy chairman of Jabhah Pondok Kelantan, was entitled to express his views like anyone else. 'That is his personal opinion. I believe if there's a new prime minister, it might improve the economy. 'We have our own experts who can offer better perspectives,' he told a press conference after officiating the Selangor PAS Youth general assembly at Dewan Mawar Biru Duo in Kapar here today. Earlier, it was reported that Sheikh Wazir had expressed hope the unity government under Anwar would remain until the end of its term. He said a frequent change of government was 'not in line with Islamic values' and could negatively affect the advancement of Islam and the economy. He was believed to be responding to ongoing efforts by certain quarters, particularly the opposition, to topple the government with a major protest rally planned next week. Yesterday, Anwar challenged his critics to table a vote of no-confidence in the Dewan Rakyat if they wished to take over Putrajaya. He called on those who wanted to topple the government to follow the proper process. If they did not have the support in the Dewan Rakyat, he said they must wait for the next general election instead of resorting to street demonstrations or inciting the public. Perikatan Nasional has planned a 'Turun Anwar' mass rally for July 26 in Kuala Lumpur to push for Anwar's resignation. The organisers expect up to 300,000 participants although a similar protest in Shah Alam earlier this month drew just over 300.

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia and Singapore are deepening cooperation in three key areas – GovTech, public housing, and public sector reforms – to improve public service efficiency. The initiative follows discussions during Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar's three-day working visit to Singapore. Shamsul Azri highlighted Singapore's expertise in GovTech as a model for Malaysia, which is in the early stages of implementation. 'We want to learn from Singapore, especially in GovTech, where they have already made progress. We are still launching our own system,' he said. Affordable housing was another focus, with Malaysia keen to adopt best practices from Singapore's Housing Board. 'Their public housing system is efficient, and we aim to replicate that success,' he added. The third area of collaboration is public sector reform. Shamsul Azri noted Singapore's openness to sharing knowledge. 'Singapore welcomed our proposals, and we held productive discussions on strengthening government cooperation,' he said. Speaking at the Sports Carnival of the Alumni Association of MRSM Malaysia (ANSARA Malaysia), Shamsul Azri also emphasized the importance of healthy living.
