Harmanpreet Kaur's Team are riding on a high after their first-ever T20I series win over England recently. The India women cricket team beat England 3-2 on their own turf.
Now, the Indian side have set their sights on carrying their fine form into the ODI format as they build towards the ICC Women's ODI World Cup 2025 later this year in India and Sri Lanka. India will take on England in a three-match ODI series beginning at the Rose Bowl in Southampton on Wednesday.
Team India had won their last ODI assignment – the Tri-series against Sri Lanka and South Africa – in May this year. Indians have tweaked their approach in recent years, placing greater emphasis on posting totals in excess of 300.
'In the ODI cricket we've been playing for the last couple of years, we've always focused on scoring more than 300 with the bat,' skipper Harmanpreet said.
'It gives the bowlers some cushioning. Earlier we had five bowling options, and it becomes slightly tough if we have only so many runs on the board. Recently, like in the T20Is, we went for four spin options. I think somewhere that has helped,' she added.
Young opener Pratika Rawal has been preferred over Shafali Verma once again after scoring impressively in the tri-series tournament. Pratika etched her name in the record books by becoming the fastest batter to reach 500 runs in women's ODIs.
England, on the other hand, will be bolstered by the return of two key players – skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt, who missed the last three T20Is due to a groin strain. She is back to lead the side for the ODI series.
World No. 1 ODI bowler Sophie Ecclestone also returns after a lengthy layoff due to a knee injury which forced her out of the West Indies series in May.

Indian wrestlers ended the Polyák Imre & Varga János Memorial 2025 Ranking Series in Budapest with a total of nine medals across men's freestyle, men's greco-roman and women's wrestling. The Indian women's team won the team title with 130 points defeating USA with two gold, two silver, and two bronze medals while the male freestyle wrestlers ended up with one gold and one bronze medal and India won a solitary silver medal in the men's greco-roman. In the women's wrestling, Olympian Antim Panghal in 53kg and youngster Harshita in 72 kg won the two gold medals for India while Priya Malik in 76 kg category and Neha Sangwan in the 57 kg category won the silver medal. In the 50kg category, Neelam secured bronze with a win over Kseniya Stankevich of Belarus and in the 62 kg, Asian champion Manisha Bhanwala earned a bronze. Antim claimed gold in the 53kg category with a 7-4 win over Russia's Natalia Malysheva. This marked Antim's second Ranking Series gold in a row, following her title-winning run at the Ulaanbaatar Open in Mongolia last month. Harshita added the second gold medal for India in the 72kg category with a dominant 10-0 victory over four-time Asian champion Zhamila Bakbergenova of Kazakhstan. In the 57kg category, Neha Sangwan had to settle for silver after a defeat via pinfall to Olympic champion Helen Maroulis of the USA. In the men's freestyle, Sujeet Kalkal had a stunning start to the campaign defeating 2024 Paris Olympics bronze medallist Islam Dudaev of Albania 11-0. Then, he defeated European silver medallist Khazmat Arsamerzouev of France 11-0 in the next round. In the semi-final, he won 6-1 against European bronze medallist Vazgen Tevanyan of Armenia. England vs India: Nitish Kumar Reddy ruled out of series

The Indian team received another injury blow on Sunday when all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy was ruled out of the remaining two matches of the Test series due to a ligament injury. The news comes on the heels of pacers Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep were ruled out of the fourth Test at Old Trafford, prompting the selection committee to include Haryana seamer Anshul Kamboj in the squad as back-up. Reddy played the second and third Tests against England and had scores of 1,1, 30 and 13 while taking three wickets. It is not yet clear whether the selection committee will send another player as Reddy's replacement. It is learnt that Reddy informed the team management on Sunday morning that he felt some discomfort while stretching, and scans showed a tear, and the player could be on the sidelines for a few weeks. The visitors are 1-2 behind after three Tests of the series, with the fourth match beginning on Wednesday. The selectors and team management will now have to make at least two changes to the playing XI from the Lord's Test, as Akash Deep and Reddy will not be available. The 26-year-old Arshdeep suffered a cut on his bowling hand during a net session on Thursday while stopping a ball hit by Sai Sudharsan on his follow-through. The hand was stitched up but he won't be fit for the fourth Test. He hasn't played a Test yet but could have been in line for a debut in case the team management went for a change in the pace attack. Akash Deep has a groin niggle and didn't bowl in the nets before the team left for Manchester. Currently, the Indian team has a pace-bowling all-rounder in Shardul Thakur in the squad.
