Telcables West Africa to Offer Super Digital Highway to the United States (US) and Europe Through Megaport Partnership

Zawya26-03-2025
TelCables West Africa, a subsidiary of Angola Cables (www.AngolaCables.co.ao) and leading global Network as a Service (NaaS) provider, Megaport have announced a dual arrangement whereby TelCables customers can selectively connect to over 930 data centres and more than 300 cloud nodes, at reduced fees and network charges of up to 75%, using the international Angola Cables backbone network.
For the TelCables customers, this means having On-Net connectivity at reduced costs and lead times when requesting international access and multi cloud connectivity to public and private clouds such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, Oracle, Alibaba and Google Cloud. This also means that, financial, AI content and other content being hosted by major data center operators in the USA and Europe can be cached closer to markets in Nigeria, Ghana and other countries in the West African region.
Through this collaboration, Angola Cables will also interconnect their actual key global locations - New York, Miami, and London to allow users to benefit from real-time circuit provisioning to more than 530 Data Centre Locations in US and more than 260 Data Centre Locations in Europe. This effectively gives customers immediate availability (99.99% uptime availability) at minimal latencies.
Fernando Fernandes, CEO of TelCables Nigeria and West Africa, says that Megaport chose the Angola Cables and Telcables West Africa as African Partners due to the network efficiency and latency optimization that the Angola Cables' network offers. 'This is a major leap forward for digital connectivity on the African continent and given the configuration of our subsea cable and partner networks, we are effectively opening a 'super corridor' for the express transit of data and traffic from East to West.'
Fernandes maintains that the agreement with Megaport offers multiple benefits for enterprises across Nigeria and West Africa – especially for those businesses looking for flexible connectivity with adjustable bandwidth – at affordable rates – allowing businesses to scale-up and expand their operations to other parts of Africa and primary destinations in international markets.
'The simple and efficient interface gives users the ability to access financial institutions, from the major stock exchanges to international banking and investment houses. The options are almost limitless, whether it is an academic or research institution looking to link into a learning institution in the US or a business looking to expand into Singapore. The low-latency connections can be set-up within a matter of minutes through the easy-to-use Megaport platform that makes it possible for companies to connect and scale their businesses instantly.'
Executive Vice President of Business Development and Global Channel for Megaport, Matt Simpson, says the strategic partnership benefits all parties and opens a door to a range of solutions and services that could benefit emerging economies and businesses in Africa currently using the Angola Cables' backbone network. 'Our extensive SDN simplifies connectivity for enterprises looking to interconnect between data centres, cloud and AI, internet exchanges, and 300+ service providers across five continents,' notes Simpson. 'The reach and capabilities of our global NaaS platform helps businesses by removing many of the traditional access complexities when it comes to technical resources, capital costs, performance, and network security.
The Megaport global ecosystem also gives customers direct access to its latest AI-Exchange and Financial Services Exchange.
'As the most interconnected network operator in Africa*, our collaboration with Megaport effectively gives businesses across the African continent the means to expand their operations and increase their revenues by reaching customers in the global marketplace – wherever they may be located,' concluded Fernandes.

Starlink launches internet services in Somalia

This deployment represents a significant stride toward bridging Somalia’s digital divide and fostering greater participation in the digital economy. Starlink has launched its high-speed satellite internet service in Somalia, marking its entry into the company’s 25th African market. The rollout follows the National Communications Authority’s (NCA) approval of Starlink’s operational licence in April 2025, a move government officials have hailed as a major step towards bridging the country’s digital divide. The launch aligns with the Somali National ICT Policy and Strategy (2019–2024), which prioritises building domestic digital infrastructure and widening access. The service aims to transform internet coverage and drive digital inclusion in a nation where 70% of the population lacks reliable broadband. Starlink’s residential plan costs $70 per month, with a one-time hardware fee of $390. While the pricing is higher than that of many local providers, some consumers may view its low-latency, high-speed connectivity as worth the premium. Officials see Starlink’s arrival as a boost to socio-economic growth, helping address digital infrastructure gaps and paving the way for a more connected, sustainable future. The Somalia launch comes after Starlink’s recent entries into Chad and Lesotho earlier this year, markets where regulatory hurdles were minimal compared to South Africa.

Discussions focused on strengthening economic relations between the Ras Al Khaimah Chamber of Commerce and the Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, with emphasis on promoting trade exchange and enhancing investment cooperation. Both parties reviewed the investment advantages offered in Ras Al Khaimah and the Republic of Uganda, highlighting the importance of unlocking new opportunities across key sectors in both countries. Al Nuaimi stated that the Ras Al Khaimah Chamber of Commerce always welcomes initiatives that support the private sector in exploring useful and profitable investment opportunities in many friendly countries around the world, bringing mutual benefits and shared interests. He pointed out that Uganda is one of the African countries connected to the business environment of the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah through several business partnerships and agreements. He also noted the importance of increasing partnerships in the small and medium enterprises sector, which will enhance investment opportunities for the private sector and the overall business environment. Ambassador Kibedi expressed his pleasure at meeting with the Ras Al Khaimah Chamber of Commerce, particularly as it is the official body responsible for organizing private sector affairs in the Emirate. He affirmed his country's interest in boosting and expanding trade exchange in a manner that serves the mutual interests of both sides. He also extended an invitation to the Ras Al Khaimah Chamber of Commerce and its members to attend the UAE-Uganda Business Forum, scheduled to take place from October 27th to 29th in Kampala, Uganda. The meeting, held at the Chamber's headquarters, was attended by Youssef Mohamed Ismail, First Vice Chairman of the Chamber and Head of the Supreme Committee of the Saud Bin Saqr Establishment for Youth Project Development, and Dr. Ahmed Al Shemeili, Director-General of the Ras Al Khaimah Chamber of Commerce. Earlier in May the Ras Al Khaimah Chamber of Commerce and Industry discussed with the Consulate of the People's Republic of Bangladesh in the UAE areas of economic and commercial cooperation between the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah and the Republic of Bangladesh, and ways to establish distinguished bilateral partnerships that serve the growing relations and contribute to creating new investment opportunities and fields. This came during a meeting between Mohamed Ali Musabbeh Al Nuaimi, Chairman of Ras Al Khaimah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Md. Rashedujjaman, Consul-General of the People's Republic of Bangladesh in Dubai and the Northern Emirates, held at the Chamber's headquarters. The Consul-General of the People's Republic of Bangladesh also raised the idea of establishing a Bangladesh Business Council in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, similar to the business councils in other Emirates. Both parties agreed on the importance of organising workshops for the Bangladeshi community in the Emirate and setting a general framework for mechanisms to attract Bangladeshi businesspeople and investments to Ras Al Khaimah. In May 2025, Mohamed Ali Musabbeh Al Nuaimi, Chairman of the Ras Al Khaimah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, praised the strong and enduring ties between the UAE and the State of Kuwait, highlighting the fruitful cooperation between both countries, especially in the trade sector. Hunan Takes Centre Stage in China's Africa Trade Strategy

Hunan, a central province in China, has emerged as a vital player in the country's trade and economic relations with Africa, defying the common association of Beijing or Shanghai as the primary hubs for these dealings. With its strategic location and evolving infrastructure, Hunan is positioning itself as a key partner in China's broader strategy to expand its influence on the African continent. Over the past few years, China's deepening ties with Africa have sparked a surge in trade and investments, particularly in sectors like infrastructure, mining, and agriculture. However, while cities like Beijing and Shanghai receive significant attention due to their size and status, Hunan has been quietly building its own reputation as a crucial gateway for trade between China and Africa. This province, with its bustling transportation network and growing industrial base, is becoming increasingly instrumental in executing China's Belt and Road Initiative, a development strategy that focuses on building trade and economic links across Asia, Europe, and Africa. One key factor driving Hunan's rise is its proximity to China's vast manufacturing sector. The province is home to a number of industries, including high-tech manufacturing, which allows it to export a range of products suited to African markets. In addition to the trade of consumer goods and raw materials, Hunan's industries are focusing on supplying infrastructure materials, which align with the needs of many African nations. For example, construction equipment and industrial machinery from Hunan-based manufacturers have been integral to various large-scale infrastructure projects across the continent. ADVERTISEMENT A growing number of Chinese businesses in Hunan are establishing strong networks in Africa, capitalising on emerging markets for products like electrical machinery, vehicles, and construction materials. The province's growing number of air, rail, and sea connections to key African markets is enhancing its strategic importance. Hunan's ability to act as a bridge for China-Africa trade is supported by the province's government, which has worked diligently to establish ties with African governments and enterprises. These efforts have been part of China's broader diplomatic and economic outreach in Africa. Hunan's provincial leadership has shown an eagerness to foster stronger economic relations, seeking to promote trade exhibitions, joint ventures, and technological exchange programmes between African nations and Hunan-based companies. This approach has gained traction as African nations increasingly turn to China not only for financing but also for technology transfer, expertise, and industrial development. The growing collaboration between Hunan and African countries has not gone unnoticed. Trade delegations from various African nations have visited the province in recent years, with an increasing focus on strengthening bilateral economic ties. These visits are usually accompanied by trade and investment agreements, which have facilitated joint ventures in sectors such as agriculture, renewable energy, and infrastructure development. Additionally, Hunan has attracted African students to its universities, boosting educational and cultural exchanges between China and Africa. Key African countries like Kenya, Ethiopia, and South Africa are particularly prominent in Hunan's Africa strategy. For instance, Kenya's rapidly expanding infrastructure sector has seen significant Chinese involvement, with Hunan-based companies providing construction materials and machinery for large-scale projects. In Ethiopia, Hunan's technology and manufacturing sectors have also found fertile ground for their products, particularly in areas like telecommunications and heavy industry. As China's presence in Africa grows, Hunan's importance in facilitating these connections is expected to increase. This is evident in the province's continued investment in ports, railways, and airports, which are vital for the smooth flow of goods and services. Furthermore, with Africa being one of the fastest-growing economic regions in the world, the demand for Chinese goods and services is likely to intensify, providing more opportunities for provinces like Hunan to capitalise on their strategic positioning.
