Emily Mackay reminisces on her time as a U-E Tiger with students
News 34 caught up with Mackay at an assembly with 3rd, 4th and 5th graders at Ann G McGuinness Elementary in West Corners.
Mackay discussed the importance of goal setting while reminiscing about her time at McGuinness.
Mackay says she remembers fondly running around the bus drop-off zone for gym class, always with the goal of beating the boys.
She says it was wonderful seeing some familiar faces and getting the opportunity to try and inspire this next generation of U-E Tigers.
'I played violin up here, I was looking at this setup on the stage with all of the band stuff. I just remember sitting up there for my violin lessons. So many incredible memories here,' said Mackay.
Among the familiar faces was Mackay's 3rd grade teacher Lauralee Kephart.
Kephart says she's extremely proud, but not surprised, by what Mackay has accomplished.
She says the Olympian is a great role model for the young kids.
'She was a great student, very bubbly. A hard worker then, so I knew she was going to do great things,' said Kephart. 'Our character trait right now is perseverance. So, I can use it as a teaching moment for that. I have her picture already hanging in my classroom and I can use it by saying, 'Look, she persevered, and I can use it for a teaching moment with them perfect. It's perfect for that.'
Mackay autographed photos for each classroom before moving on to visits at George F Johnson Elementary, Jennie F Snapp Middle School and Union-Endicott High School.
Her next major competition is world championships in Japan in September. Meanwhile, her ultimate goal is to return to the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028 and this time bring home a medal.

Giants legend Phil Simms is returning to the broadcast booth after his exit from CBS. The star quarterback, who called games for NBC and CBS from 1995 to 2016, will work three Big Ten college football games on Peacock this season, NBC Sports announced Tuesday. Panthers Defenseman Invited To Team USA's Olympic Orientation Camp
Florida Panthers defenseman Seth Jones has been invited to Team USA's Olympic orientation camp. The camp, scheduled for Aug. 26 and 27, is mainly for administrative and team-building purposes and does not feature any formal on-ice activity or public component. Earlier in August, Team Canada unveiled their orientation camp roster, which was headlined by five Panthers players: Sam Bennett, Aaron Ekblad, Brad Marchand, Sam Reinhart and Carter Verhaeghe. Jones is one of the newest Panthers, but his impressive track record goes beyond his time in Florida. Jones was the fourth overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, and has represented Team USA at the U-17s, U-18s, World Junior Championship and the World Championship. Jones won gold at the U-18s twice, the World Juniors once, while bringing home a silver medal at the U-17s and bronze at the World Championship. Jones is a minute muncher with good offensive instincts. He's a strong skater for a defenseman with a 6-foot-4 frame, but earning a spot on the American roster will be a challenge. The 30-year-old was left off the 4 Nations Face-Off roster and is one of the 16 defensemen invited to the orientation camp. The Americans don't lack talented offensive defenders, but require shutdown blueliners, something Jones could develop into this season.

At the end of his playing days in the NBA, Belinell signed a three-year deal with Virtus Bologna, an Italian club team. Belinelli also played for the Italian national basketball team throughout his career. However, he did not participate in the 2024 Olympics. Belinelli's retirement was announced by the FIBA EuroBasket's X, formerly Twitter. Belinelli last played for the Spurs in 2020 when the season was cut short due to the COVID pandemic before the season resumed for 22 out of the 30 teams that were invited to the bubble near Walt Disney World in Orlando. After the Spurs were eliminated, Belinelli agreed to a three-year deal to play in Italy. However, the 2014 Spurs champion will be remembered for his role that led to an NBA championship. He averaged 11.4 points on 48.5% shooting, including 43% from deep, where he was a consistent threat from behind the arc. Belinelli averaged 9.7 points on 42.4% shooting, including 37.6% from three throughout his 13-year NBA career. Belinelli, the 18th overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, spent 13 seasons in the NBA. He has played for the Golden State Warriors, the Toronto Raptors, the New Orleans Hornets, the Chicago Bulls, the Atlanta Hawks, and the Philadelphia 76ers, along with the Spurs. 2025-26 season predictions for the Spurs after schedule release While this year's San Antonio Spurs are far from championship contenders, such as the team champion Marco Belinelli played for, they've built an intriguing young core that's built for the future. Led by All-Star center Victor Wembanyama, 2025 Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle, and the second overall pick in this year's NBA draft, guard Dylan Harper, the Spurs could make a significant stride in 2025-26. Surrounding their young core with proven veterans such as point guard De'Aaron Fox, and a pair of veteran centers in Kelly Olynyk and Luke Kornet, the Spurs will look to build off of last season. The Spurs also inked Fox to a long-term extension for four years, worth $229 million. Pairing Fox with Wembanyama appears to be a focal point of the Spurs' future. After Wembanyama suffered blood clots, which ended his 2024-25 season, he didn't get many reps with Fox on the floor. Still, that didn't prevent the Spurs front office from making its long-term investment in Fox, which suggested the kind of direction the Spurs want to head in despite rostering two promising guards in Castle and Harper, who both play the same position as De'Aaron.
