PETALING JAYA : Bersatu's Hulu Langat information chief Shafiq Abdul Halim has denied stoking racial and religious sentiments, following a RM10,000 fine imposed on him by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
In a statement posted on his Facebook page today, Shafiq criticised MCMC for sending four officials to his residence 'merely' to notify him of the fine.
'The presence of enforcement officials in numbers created the impression that my residence was being raided, causing worry among my neighbours.
'An MCMC official was also seen taking pictures for what he said was documentation purposes, without giving a clear explanation why,' he claimed.
Shafiq said the officials' presence could be seen as a form of intimidation to create fear.
'The officials also did not identify themselves or state their positions when asked, but only said they were messengers acting on higher orders.
'The compound notice letter given to me was not accompanied by a clear explanation as to the basis of the alleged offence,' he said.
MCMC said in a statement this evening that the fine was for posting offensive and extreme content involving racial and religious sentiments related to the KL Tower workers issue on TikTok on March 31.
The commission said it had received permission from the Attorney-General's Chambers to issue the fine, following investigations into Shafiq under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities.
Shafiq said in conducting their investigations, MCMC officials had asked him whether he had received orders from Bersatu's top leadership on the matter or received payment from any party.
'I strongly deny all of MCMC's accusations, given that I have already presented the relevant facts I referenced (in my post) to the investigating officials,' he said.
Shafiq said he had received legal advice on the matter and his lawyer was preparing an official response to MCMC's letter.

Loh Siew Hong's ex-husband dies amid domestic assault court battle
Loh Siew Hong had been embroiled in a custody battle over her three children with her ex-husband, Muslim convert Muhammad Nagahswaran Muniandy. PETALING JAYA : Muhammad Nagahswaran Muniandy, the former husband of Loh Siew Hong, has died. Loh's lawyer Shamsher Singh Thind confirmed that Nagahswaran passed on yesterday. He was 38. The duo became embroiled in a custody battle after Nagahswaran took their three children to Perlis and unilaterally converted them to Islam in 2020. At the time, several court orders had already granted Loh custody, starting with an interim order in December 2019 which progressed to full custody by March 2021. Their divorce was finalised in September 2021. Muhammad Nagahswaran Muniandy. Loh, who left Nagahswaran in 2019 after complaining of abuse, filed for a habeas corpus order for her children in early 2022. The High Court ruled in her favour, and she was reunited with the children who, at one point, were placed in the care of preacher Nazirah Nanthakumari Abdullah. That same year, Loh filed for judicial review to challenge their conversion. In April 2024, the Federal Court ruled that both parents must consent to a child's conversion, and confirmed that Loh's children remained Hindus. A final appeal by the Perlis government to reinstate the children's status as Muslims was dismissed in April this year. Nagahswaran had a criminal record and was placed under restricted residence in Kelantan for a drug-related offence in November 2020 but was released in November 2022. His conviction came to light during the custody battle with his ex-wife, and was one of the reasons cited by Loh in her bid for the custody of their children. His time in prison coincided with the period when Loh said she was recovering from alleged domestic abuse and hospitalisation, further complicating the high-profile case. Nagahswaran was charged at the Sungai Petani sessions court in July 2023 with causing grievous hurt to Loh at their home in Taman Ria, Sungai Petani, on March 3, 2019. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail of RM10,000 and ordered to keep away from Loh and the witnesses pending the trial. The sessions court had scheduled the criminal trial to commence in September this year.

Apples, oranges, lemons to cost 5% more
Good morning. Here's what you should know today. Key Highlights Apples, oranges, lemons to cost 5% more Appeals court hits pause on Yusoff v Anwar No opt-out for MCMC data gathering Apples, oranges, lemons to cost 5% more Apples, lemons, and most oranges - fruits that are almost entirely imported here - are going to cost 5 percent more come July. The reason? The government is expanding the sales and services tax (SST) to cover more "non-essential" goods and services, and imported fruits are on that list. Local fruits, however, will remain tax-free, as will a slew of other food staples. Other food items that will be taxed include salmon, cod, truffle mushrooms, and king crab. HIGHLIGHTS Appeals court hits pause on Yusoff v Anwar The Court of Appeal has granted a temporary stay of proceedings in the sexual assault civil suit brought against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim by Yusoff Rawther. This is pending a decision on Anwar's bid to get a full stay on the case. The trial was supposed to commence next week before Anwar got the temporary stay on Tuesday. HIGHLIGHTS No opt-out for MCMC data gathering There is no option for mobile users to opt out of an ongoing pilot project involving the collection of anonymised mobile phone data for official statistical purposes. The MCMC cited legal provisions that allow them to collect anonymised data for infrastructure improvement. They added that mobile phone data is not classified as personal data under the Personal Data Protection Act 2010, as it reportedly can't be used to identify or trace individuals, either directly or indirectly.
