UNC basketball 2024-25 player review: Ty Claude
The 2024-25 UNC basketball season is in the books, and with that, it's time for our player season reviews for the campaign. And today we start with forward Ty Claude.
The 6-foot-7, 230-pound Greensboro, North Carolina native joined North Carolina for his senior year after playing two seasons at Morehead State, one year at Western Carolina and one year at Georgia Tech. He was one of a few players who committed to the Tar Heels out of the transfer portal with the hope of providing depth in the front court.
In the past, Claude did put up big numbers, including a season in which he averaged 15.4 points and 8.6 rebounds per game in 2022-23, but that was with Western Carolina. With power fives, his numbers lowered.
2024-25 stats: 1.2 points, 1.6 rebounds, 50 percent shooting in 20 games and 1 game started.
Season in Review
Even with questions in North Carolina's frontcourt, Claude found himself buried in the rotation behind Jalen Washington, Ven-Allen Lubin and Jae-Lyn Withers. He never really found his role despite appearing in 20 games and hit double digits in minutes just three times this season.
Claude did have a season-high seven points in a win over American back in November but as the season went on, his role quickly diminished. It didn't help that UNC struggled throughout the year but it did give him a few chances to get some playing time as Davis turned to him to help off the bench with his big guys were struggling or got into foul trouble.
What's next?
Claude has officially exhausted eligibility, playing in his fifth and final season. With the extra Covid-19 year now gone, he cannot return for another year. Whether he pursues basketball overseas is another question for him.
In his five-year career, Claude played at four different programs but found the most success with Western Carolina. He did get to wrap up his career playing in-state with the Tar Heels.

First look at QB Aaron Rodgers at a Steeler
First look at QB Aaron Rodgers at a Steeler Tuesday marked a day that was a long time coming. The Pittsburgh Steelers kicked off their mandatory minicamp and everyone got their first look at quarterback Aaron Rodgers since signing with the Steelers a week ago. Rodgers didn't do any team drills on Tuesday as directed by head coach Mike Tomlin. This is because Rodgers chose to hold out on signing with the Steelers until just a few days ago, so he missed the bulk of the offseason work and doesn't know the offense yet. Tomlin and the Steelers are hopeful that the fourth time is the charm. 2025 will mark the fourth-straight season where the Steelers will have a different starter. Pittsburgh has been trying to tread water at quarterback since Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger retired after the 2021 season. MSU target, 3-star RB Nelsyn Wheeler commits to Illinois following official visit
MSU target, 3-star RB Nelsyn Wheeler commits to Illinois following official visit For a second straight day, a Michigan State running back target has announced he's heading elsewhere. Nelsyn Wheeler of Omaha, Neb. announced his commitment to Illinois on Tuesday. The commitment comes after Wheeler took an official visit to Illinois this past weekend, and one day after he announced he would be cancelling his upcoming official visit Michigan State. Wheeler is a three-star prospect in the 2026 class, and holds a recruiting rating of 85 on 247Sports. He ranks as the No. 75 running back in 247Sports' composite rankings. Michigan State was one of a few schools in pursuit for Wheeler. Kansas, Wisconsin, Cincinnati and Northwestern were a few of the other big-time programs after Wheeler before he committed to Illinois. Wheeler is the latest Michigan State running back target to commit elsewhere -- four-star running back Damon Ferguson of Baltimore committed to Pitt on Monday, three-star running back Michael Dukes of Detroit committed to Rutgers last week, and Kory Amachree of Haslett, Mich. committed to Kansas last month. So Michigan State is back to the drawing board when it comes to a running back in the 2026 class. 3-star cornerback Derrick Johnson II commits to the Oklahoma Sooners
3-star cornerback Derrick Johnson II commits to the Oklahoma Sooners The Oklahoma Sooners have received a commitment in each of the last three days following their first big recruiting weekend of the summer. On Sunday night, defensive end Matthew Nelson committed to Oklahoma. On Monday, Noah Best pledged to the Sooners. On Tuesday, the Sooners added their 10th player in the 2026 recruiting class, receiving a commitment from cornerback Derrick Johnson II. Johnson is considered a three-star prospect in the cycle and hails from Marietta Valley, California. He's a long and tall cornerback, standing 6-foot-2, and he weighs 170 pounds. Johnson chose the Sooners over offers from Utah, Washington, Kansas, and UCLA. He's a physical cornerback that covers well in man-to-man. Johnson has the speed to run with wide receivers down the field and the lateral movement ability to stick with receivers in and out of the breaks. He also plays wide receiver at the high school level and shows off great hands when he gets an opportunity to catch the football. Johnson is the first cornerback committed in the 2026 cycle for Jay Valai and the Sooners defense. With his size and speed he's a promising corner for Brent Venables to deploy on the outside of his defense.
