Charity celebrates 160th year in style with big party
An Isle of Wight charity celebrated its 160th year with a large gathering for its volunteers last week. Sight for Wight, an independent Island charity established in 1865, hosted a party on Wednesday, July 30. Volunteers celebrated the milestone with cake and entertainment at the charity's site on Carisbrooke Road, Newport. The event also marked the departure of CEO Lisa Hollyhead, and welcomed new CEO JD Viette. "Maurice Kachuk joined us and entertained everyone, so thank you to him for giving us his time. Our members enjoyed dancing with you. Sight for Wight is the Island's oldest charity (Image: Sight for Wight) "A big thank you to everyone who attended and everyone who contributed towards Lisa's leaving present. It was very much appreciated by the charity and by Lisa herself." The charity will break for activities over August, but has set up its short story writing competition, with one of the winning stories published in the County Press and all of them read by celebrities, including Chesney Hawkes. Sight for Wight will also celebrate 50 years of Talking News in October with a special event. Sight for Wight also operates the popular Dress for Less shop on Pyle Street in Newport. Established in 1865, the charity is one of the oldest independent charities on the Isle of Wight. It was set up following the amalgamation of two other charities, to provide practical help and emotional support to blind people who live on the Isle of Wight, enabling them to live independently.

Search is on to find Swindon's next town crier
The search is on for Swindon's next town crier. A competition will be held in the town centre later this month to determine who has the vocal chops to take over the role. The competition last ran at the Town Gardens during the Old Town Festival, with help from community radio station Swindon 105.5, when Fred Ferris won the title and carried out the role for 15 years until his death in 2013. He attended many civic and community events and anniversaries. His ceremonial bell and costume have been donated by his family and will be passed on to the new Town Crier by competition organisers. 'Holding the event in the Town Centre brings together Old and New Town and through the town's community radio station. 'It is an exciting, unique local opportunity.' 'By reviving the role of Town Crier, we honour Fred's legacy and bring community spirit and tradition back into the heart of the town.' Lil Baby Hosts Back to School Benefit for 4,000 Students in Atlanta: ‘It Means A Lot to Come Back & Give Back'
Lil Baby and his nonprofit The Jones Project hosted their fifth annual Back to School Fest over the weekend, welcoming more than 4,000 families to West End Production Park for a day of fun. The Production Park was transformed on Saturday into a massive festival space, with the event providing thousands of students with free school supplies and uniforms. Done in collaboration with The Jessie Rose Project, The Athlete's Foot, Slim & Huskies, Fanatics, Dr. Bombay Ice Cream and Zaxby's, Lil Baby stopped by the event to hang with the kids and take a few selfies. A number of city leaders stopped by to show their support, including Atlanta City Council members Andrea Boone, Michael J. Bonds and Marci Overstreet, as well as Eshe Collins, the civil rights attorney and board member of the Atlanta Board of Education. 'It means a lot to be able to come back and give back, because I know so much comes behind not having shoes and school utensils and stuff for school — because that be a lot of kids' reason to steer off,' Baby told The Atlanta Voice. Lil Baby first launched the initiative back in 2021, with the goal of providing for and uplifting youth and families in his hometown. 'Lil Baby, Dominique, keep doing what you are doing — we love you for that,' Yolanda Hill, a parent in attendance, told The Atlanta Voice. 'A lot of artists just throw money and don't really come to these types of events, but he came and actually stayed and showed face.'
