Arab Parliament condemns Israeli escalation, attacks on places of worship
CAIRO (WAM) Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Yamahi, President of the Arab Parliament, strongly condemned the dangerous escalation by the Israeli occupation against the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank.In a statement issued, Al Yamahi described the ongoing blockade, starvation, and targeting of civilians—particularly women, children and families—as a fully fledged crime committed in plain view of the world.He stated, 'What is happening in Gaza, from deliberate starvation to deadly siege, leaving children, women and families to die from hunger or by bullets, is a crime the global conscience can no longer bear.'Al Yamahi also warned against the Israeli occupation's illegal decision to transfer the administration and supervision of the Ibrahimi Mosque from the Palestinian Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs to what is known as the 'Jewish Religious Council.' He condemned the move as a blatant violation of international resolutions, including those issued by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).He stressed the danger of such illegal actions, which form part of a wider plan by the occupation to alter the historical, legal and religious status of Islamic holy sites in the occupied Palestinian territory and impose a fabricated Israeli sovereignty over them. He reaffirmed that all such decisions and actions are illegal and void under international law.Al Yamahi also denounced the Israeli military's continued targeting of places of worship in Gaza, including mosques and churches, the most recent being the Latin Patriarchate church, which was sheltering around 600 Palestinians, including children and persons with disabilities. He described the attack as a war crime and held the Israeli occupation fully responsible for these heinous acts.He called on the international community to take immediate and effective action to stop the aggression, ensure the urgent and sustainable entry of humanitarian aid, and hold the leaders of the Israeli occupation accountable as war criminals.Al Yamahi reaffirmed the Arab Parliament's unwavering support for the resilience of the Palestinian people.
He concluded by stating that these violations will never be erased or expire with time, and that the Arab Parliament will continue its efforts at all levels to support the Palestinian people in achieving their full rights.

More than a thousand people are believed to have been killed in a week of fighting in Syria's Sweida, even as an uneasy truce reigned across the governorate on Sunday. Humanitarian convoys were readying to enter Sweida to ease the impact of days of sectarian violence that broke out last weekend between Syrian Bedouin, Druze and government forces. The interior ministry announced overnight that the city had been evacuated of all tribal fighters and that the clashes had ceased following President Ahmed al-Sharaa's announcement of a ceasefire on Saturday. A spokesperson for the Syrian Council of Tribes and Clans told Al-Jazeera that the fighters had left the city "in response to the presidency's call and in accordance with the terms of the agreement". Residents have been left confined to their homes without electricity and water, while food supplies are scarce. The US special envoy for Syria, Tom Barrack, said on Sunday that the country was at a "critical moment", calling for "peace and dialogue to prevail". "All factions must lay down their arms," he wrote on X. Fighting between Druze factions, Bedouin groups and troops loyal to Sharaa's administration has rocked the region since last weekend, exacerbated by Israeli air strikes. The Druze of Sweida had largely stayed out of Syria's 14-year civil war, and the governorate saw protests over living conditions in the last few years of former President Bashar al-Assad's rule. Following his ouster in December, many Druze have remained wary of the new government led by Sharaa, the former leader of an al-Qaeda affiliate that carried out sectarian attacks on the community during the war. Although Sharaa has rejected his previous affiliation and attempted to rebuild ties, several groups in Sweida have actively opposed his government. Israel has also spent several days attacking Syria, citing the defence of the Druze community. On Saturday, Washington declared it had brokered a truce between Israel and Syria to avoid further escalation. Israel had bombed government positions in Sweida and Damascus earlier in the week, with some targeting the Syrian defence ministry, military headquarters and the vicinity of the presidential palace.
