Chip Gaines responds to criticism about ‘Back to the Frontier' casting

CNN5 days ago
Chip and Joanna Gaines are responding to backlash over the latest show in their media empire.
Chip Gaines took to social media on Sunday to defend their new Magnolia Network reality series, 'Back to the Frontier.' The show drew criticism from some Christian conservatives for featuring a gay couple, Jason Hanna and Joe Riggs.
'Talk, ask [questions], listen.. maybe even learn. Too much to ask of modern American Christian culture. Judge 1st, understand later/never,' Gaines wrote on his X account. 'It's a sad sunday when 'non believers' have never been confronted with hate or vitriol until they are introduced to a modern American Christian [broken heart emoji].'
The post came in response to comments from Franklin Graham, the son of the legendary evangelical pastor Billy Graham.
'It is very disappointing,' Graham wrote on X of the casting. 'While we are to love people, we should love them enough to tell them the truth of God's Word. His Word is absolute truth. God loves us, and His design for marriage is between one man and one woman. Promoting something that God defines as sin is in itself sin.'
Gaines and his wife have built off the success of their HGTV show 'Fixer Upper' to build several other businesses, such as a line of home goods. Their partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery, which is owned by CNN's parent company, resulted in the launch of the Magnolia Network in 2022.
The new show features three families attempting to live like homesteading pioneers in the 1880s without modern day conveniences, including electricity.
Hanna told Queerty he and Riggs, who are parents of 10-year-old twins, welcomed the 'amazing opportunity to normalize same-sex couples and same-sex families.'
'I'm super honored that when they were choosing three modern-day families, they did choose a same-sex couple as a modern-day family, because we are,' said Hanna, who also shared that when he first saw the flyer advertising the forthcoming series on social media it featured a gay couple. 'We are your neighbors and your coworkers.'
'Back to the Frontier' airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on Magnolia Network and streams on HBO Max.

'Thumbnail Testing' a New Play at Warner Bros Discovery (NASDAQ:WBD) Stock Slips

A little profit-taking to close out the week at entertainment giant Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD)? That is not out of line, especially after yesterday's 52-week high hit. Reports note that Warner plans to start doing A/B testing on photo thumbnails used on HBO Max, a development that one of its biggest rivals, Netflix (NFLX), has already been engaged in for most of the last decade. Essentially, the project will show users several different thumbnail images for a particular video, or set of videos. Then, the system will be able to track which thumbnail displayed ended up with the most user engagement. The testing will be done with the most popular titles in Warner's stable at first, reports note, but then will expand outward from there. By the end of 2026's first half, almost all of the catalog should be using A/B testing on thumbnails. For now, humans will be handling thumbnail construction, but in the future, that job will be artificial intelligence's baby, reports note. Updates on DCU Movies With Warner's Superman win still ringing in its collective ears, attention turned to two of the other major properties in its arsenal. Namely, the two other founding members of the Justice League: Batman, with the upcoming The Brave and the Bold, and an as-yet-untitled Wonder Woman movie. The bad news, for those eager to catch the latest comic book outings, is that these two will be a while in coming. The scripts are still being written, and shooting cannot begin until the scripts are actually ready to go, as DC Studios CEO James Gunn noted. While the news of further waiting is not pleasant, it is comforting to note that Warner seems focused on giving the creative team the time it needs to properly incubate titles and bring out quality product. The clip began with a video of her and her friends having fun partying together. She put a butterfly filter over the video and made a kissy face at the camera. "Friday nights before kids," she wrote on top of the footage, which then transitioned to a clip of her and her son cheering. Her son ate a snack while she sipped on some wine. "Friday nights now ..." she wrote over the video. Heather wrote in the caption: "Friday nights used to mean heels, dinner reservations, and another round of drinks… Now it's PJs by 7, a toddler dance party, and negotiating over bedtime snacks. 🍪🍼 Wouldn't trade it for anything. #MomLife #FridayNightsNow." In the comment section, Haack shared similar sentiments, writing, "Agree 💯❤️." Over on her Instagram Stories, Heather asked her followers what type of content they wanted to see more of and didn't disappoint. In response to a fan writing that she wanted to see "real life/mom life" she shared a clip of her and her extended family working out together. "Always keeping it real over here," she wrote. In response to a fan who wanted to see more "morning vlogs," she shared a clip of her and Tristan hiding under a table, writing, "mornings can get pretty interesting around here ... 😂." In another clip, she showed a video of Tristan giving a house tour to his "mima and papa." Heather and Tarek previously announced that they'd be moving and would be documenting the process of transforming the house. When asked by PEOPLE last month if she would be willing to have more kids, Heather opened up about how being a mom is one of her favorite things. "It's no stress for me, raising kids and being a mom. It's the least stressful thing in my life and fulfills me so much. Why would I not want more of that? It's the most beautiful thing I've ever done," she said. It's a huge change, and you have to be really ready for it," continued Heather. Tarek, Heather and Haack star in HGTV's The Flip Off. Heather and Tarek also star in Flipping El Moussas, which a source told PEOPLE on July 16 was canceled after two seasons. Before joining the HGTV fold, Heather starred on Netflix's Selling Sunset.
