US imposes sanctions on Palestinian Authority officials and PLO members

The National5 days ago
The US on Thursday announced it is to impose sanctions on officials in the Palestinian Authority and the Palestine Liberation Organisation.
Washington accused the PA and PLO of 'continuing to support terrorism', supporting international legal cases against Israel and 'undermining prospects for peace', the US State Department said in a statement on Thursday.
The State Department did not immediately release a list of the officials named in the sanctions, who will be denied US visas.
'It is in our national security interests to impose consequences and hold the PLO and PA accountable for not complying with their commitments and undermining the prospects for peace,' the statement added.
The State Department accused the PA and PLO of 'taking actions to internationalise its conflict with Israel', which it said was in breach of commitments they made under the PLO Commitments Compliance Act of 1989 and the Middle East Peace Commitments Act of 2002.
The sanctions come after western nations including Canada, France and the UK said they could endorse a Palestinian state at September's UN General Assembly. The US has called the decision to recognise a Palestinian state 'reckless' and said it would benefit Hamas.
More than 60,200 Palestinians have been killed since Israel launched its war on Gaza, making it by far the deadliest episode of the decades-long conflict. Hunger grips Gaza and recent images of starving children have fuelled international backlash and forced Israel to allow more humanitarian aid into the besieged enclave.

Kuwait expands family visit visa to 3 months with extension path to 1 year

Kuwait - First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Fahad Yousef Saud Al-Sabah confirmed in a telephone call with Editor-in-Chief of the Arab Times and Al-Seyassah newspapers Ahmed Al-Jarallah that the directives he gave to those in charge of the 'Kuwait Visa' platform to address negative aspects will be implemented as of Tuesday. This is part of a vital move towards opening up to the world and making Kuwait a tourist and commercial destination, as well as a swift response to the comments of citizens and expatriates regarding the 'Kuwait Visa' platform, part of which was published by the newspaper on Monday. University degree rule scrapped as visa policy eases Visit visa pricing heads to Cabinet for final say Visa access no longer tied to national carrier The State is not a marketer for airlines Gov't eyes return of airlines that withdrew from market Tourism and trade drive Kuwait Visa platform overhaul During the telephone call, the First Deputy Prime Minister revealed a package of measures – some of which took effect on Monday, while others are still being finalized. These measures include the abolition of the local carrier requirement and the introduction of a three-month visit visa, instead of a single, multiple-entry visa. The visa can be extended for six months or one year. Visitors simply pay the required fees and choose their preferred option, especially since violations in this regard are few. Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousef asserted, 'We are building a huge airport and we want to bring back all airlines that have left the local market. Our objective is to market Kuwait as a whole.' He explained the cancellation of the local carrier requirement by indicating that the State is not a marketer for airlines; they must market themselves. Regarding kinship, the First Deputy Prime Minister disclosed, 'We have made room for it to be up to the fourth degree, which did not exist previously. Starting Tuesday, the university degree requirement is cancelled.' He added that 'those with security restrictions will be immediately notified and they must defend themselves. It is not within the purview of the platform or its administrators to address this matter. This is practiced in all other countries around the world, especially the Gulf countries.' He confirmed that he reviewed all the comments, along with the ministry's staff and the platform administrators on Monday. He stated 'we accept the comments with open hearts, because our goal is to make Kuwait a leader. Therefore, everything raised will be developed from Tuesday. We will push toward facilitating procedures and adopting whatever serves Kuwait.' On the fees, the Minister of Interior revealed 'we will present the fees for visits to the Council of Ministers on Tuesday for approval, as well as the measures that will facilitate Kuwait's openness to the world as soon as possible, to avoid any inconvenience or obstacles.' Asked about those who do not add value to the country's commercial activity or groups that accumulate without any purpose, he pointed out that 'The logical conditions set in this regard prohibit them from visiting Kuwait unless they can support themselves or their sponsor has such ability. Otherwise, they should remain in their countries.' Emphasizing that his intention for the 'Kuwait Visa' platform is to be an important reference, superior to its counterparts in the region, the Minister of Interior concluded his phone call with the editor-in-chief by saying, 'I reiterate that the State is open to any comments. The objective is to develop the platform and achieve everything that makes our country a tourist and commercial destination. As we said earlier, perfection belongs to Allah alone; thus, the platform will be developed whenever necessary.' Given the above and under the directives of the Kuwaiti immigration and civil aviation authorities, Middle East Airlines is now permitted to carry all passengers holding a family visit visa (that only Kuwaiti airlines were previously permitted to carry).

Hamdan bin Mohammed reviews program to strengthen family ties and community values in Dubai

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, affirmed that the leadership places the highest priority on strengthening family values and fostering social cohesion, while ensuring that all necessary resources and support are made available to build a thriving and prosperous Emirati society. Reviewing the outcomes of the Sheikha Hind Bint Maktoum Family Program, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed emphasised that Dubai's development vision has always placed people at its very heart. Launched in September 2023 by the Community Development Authority (CDA) in Dubai to empower Emirati families and reinforce social stability through a comprehensive set of initiatives, the programme facilitates a host of benefits including avenues for psychological and social support, financial literacy, and direct assistance in meeting housing and other expenses incurred by new couples. His Highness applauded the success of the Sheikha Hind Bint Maktoum Family Program in reinforcing the foundations of social stability by supporting and empowering Emirati families through a series of integrated and high-impact initiatives. The programme aligns with the expansive vision outlined for various social empowerment programmes and their role in creating a lasting positive impact that supports the goals of the Dubai Social Agenda 33. The review of the programme is part of ongoing efforts to monitor the social empowerment agenda and ensure that various initiatives aimed at advancing those goals achieve sustainable impact in line with Dubai's strategic vision. His Highness Sheikh Hamdan said: 'The programme reflects our deep commitment to empowering our youth and supporting them in building a future that matches their aspirations. A stable family denotes a fundamental pillar in the development and progress of societies. We are committed to providing every prerequisite for young people looking to start a dignified family life – including suitable housing, financial support, enhanced employment opportunities, and expanded social care initiatives. We believe that investing in families is an investment in the nation's future, and we will continue working to provide a wholesome environment that ensures well-being and stability for all.' Praising participants in the programme, His Highness said: 'We commend the determination of the youth who have chosen to begin their family lives based on a clear foundation of awareness and responsibility – setting a proud example for a generation that knows how to shape its future through willpower, hard work, and initiative.' Remarkable impact The Sheikha Hind Bint Maktoum Family Program has contributed to a significant increase in marriage rates among Emiratis. The Dubai Weddings initiative recorded a 218% increase in participation during 2025 compared to 2024, with the number of weddings held to date exceeding 700. Marriages facilitated through the Dubai Weddings initiative accounted for 27.7% of all marriages registered in the emirate. The results also indicated that the largest demographic of beneficiaries consisted of men aged between 26–30 and women aged between 20–25. The programme also recorded an impressive 95% beneficiary satisfaction rate. The programme offers extensive education and training sessions for couples as part of efforts to ensure the long-term success of marital relationships. Among notable highlights are Start it Right, a course promoting awareness of marital rights and effective approaches to foster mutual understanding; Family Financial Culture – Dubai, which focuses on sound financial planning; and How to Build Your Home, which offers guidance on smart and viable housing decisions. Tangible solutions The programme's benefits extend beyond education, offering tangible solutions that meet real-life needs. It offers full coverage of wedding costs for both men and women when the ceremony is hosted in CDA-approved venues. It also facilitates priority access to ready-to-move-in housing through easy instalment payment schemes. Among other benefits are exclusive discounts on medical services, wedding essentials, jewellery, magazines, and travel. Another advantage comes in the form of a loyalty card under the Esaad programme that offers various community perks. There is also a remote work provision for newlywed female employees following maternity leave. Leadership's vision Her Excellency Hessa bint Essa Buhumaid, Director General of the Community Development Authority in Dubai, emphasised that the Sheikha Hind Bint Maktoum Family Program reflects the vision of the leadership in placing family at the core of sustainable development. She noted that strengthening Emirati families is fundamental to building a cohesive and happy society. She stated: 'The programme's achievements are a source of pride. True investment starts within the Emirati household. Seeing young families embark on a key phase of life and welcoming new members into their families under the umbrella of this initiative proves that we are creating not just statistics, but real stories of secure and thriving beginnings. 'From awareness to empowerment, and from financial to housing support, we are offering a complete ecosystem that supports families at every stage of their journey. This aligns with the goals of the Dubai Social Agenda 33 and reinforces the city's role as an ideal environment for starting a family and building a future.' Thanking Her Highness Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum bin Juma Al Maktoum, wife of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, for her generous patronage of the initiative, Her Excellency Buhumaid said: 'Dubai Weddings is more than just a scheme providing assistance – it is a gesture rooted in compassion and community spirit. 'Through this initiative, Her Highness has touched the lives of countless youths, helping them start on the path of family with confidence and clarity. This initiative brought the true essence of social responsibility to life,' she said, reaffirming the Authority's commitment to continuously enhancing the programme through strategic partnerships, positioning it as a leading model for family empowerment and sustainable social development.

Hundreds Gather in Lebanon to Mark Five Years Since Beirut Blast

On Monday, August 4, hundreds of Lebanese gathered solemnly near Beirut's coastline to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the devastating port explosion that killed over 200 people and injured thousands in 2020—one of the largest non‑nuclear explosions in history. The gathering included portraits of victims, Lebanese flags, and a moving reading of names, followed by a silence at precisely 6:07 p.m.—the exact time when the blast tore through the city. Despite early promises from government officials that accountability would follow swiftly, no individuals have been held responsible for the disaster. Victims' families and rights groups voiced deep frustration at the lack of progress. As eyewitness William Noun declared, 'This file needs to close. It's been five years and we don't want to have a sixth'. President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, both elected in 2025, pledged renewed focus on the investigation. Aoun stated: 'Justice will not die, and accountability will inevitably come,' though notably neither leader attended the memorial event. Investigating judge Tarek Bitar has resumed work on the stalled probe. While he has questioned senior officials and security personnel, a formal indictment has yet to be issued, disappointing many who hoped for closure by the anniversary. Activists and legal advocates, including families like that of Paul Naggear, whose young daughter was killed, continue to press for a comprehensive investigation. Amnesty International's Lebanon campaigner, Reina Wehbi, emphasised that 'justice delayed is justice denied,' calling for a full inquiry to end the impunity that has persisted for half a decade. The wreckage of the grain silos—damaged in the blast and further deteriorating over the years—stands as a lasting monument to the disaster and a symbol of national trauma.
