Pradyot Kishore denied audience with Gomati district magistrate; TIPRA Motha and CPM condemn him
While Motha's youth and student organisations sought action against the district magistrate and warned of strikes at all government offices in Gomati, the Opposition CPM termed the DM's action 'unacceptable' and 'condemnable'.
Pradyot was en route to Agartala after an event in South Tripura when he went to T K Chakma's residence at Udaipur, accompanied by Purna Chandra Jamatia, Chief Executive Member of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), which is ruled by Motha.
Pradyot told reporters later that he had been trying to contact Chakma but his phone calls were not picked up.
'I didn't come for any of my personal work. There were some issues of Ampi and other areas of Gomati district that I wanted to talk to him about. I have been trying to talk to him for one month. If he doesn't want to meet, what can I say?' he said.
The Gomati district magistrate has not officially commented about the incident.
The Youth Tipra Federation (YTF) said civil servants were expected to cater to the needs of the public 24×7 and that the Gomati district magistrate had failed to live up to this expectation by turning away Pradyot and the TTAADC chairperson.
'We don't want such a DM in Tripura. We request Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha to dismiss this district magistrate at the earliest,' YTF leader Prashamit Debbarma said.
The tribal youth organisation also said it would launch a statewide movement and stall work in all government offices as a sign of protest unless Chakma is transferred out of Gomati district immediately. It also claimed Pradyot had been trying to contact him for several weeks to take up some issues related to government work but in vain.
Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury of the CPM said in a social media post, 'DM, Gomati's behaviour with two public representatives is not at all acceptable and condemnable. Dereliction of duties as a public servant and sheer arrogance.'
Pradyot Kishore's appeal
Meanwhile, Pradyot urged everyone to be united and refrain from targeting any community for the action of a single person. 'No doubt you might have some anger in your mind that he (Gomati DM) didn't meet nor talk. That's a different thing. Many people say something about the Chakma community. I want to tell you something: connecting a person's action with the entire community will be wrong. That DM could be Bengali, Tiprasa, Debbarma, Jamatia, Hrankhawl, Muslim, Christian or Buddhist. That was his personal action. Please do not associate it with a community. Today when we need to have a united approach, I think that blaming any community or religion will not be good for us,' he said in a video posted on his Facebook page.
Pradyot added that many Chakma people supported him and that he had supported them when they faced racial discrimination in Delhi.
'Whenever something wrong happens, when our people are killed in Bangladesh, I have supported them. A man's action should not be used to tarnish an entire community. And I want to tell my people: kindly don't attack the whole community for one mistake of one person. This is my thinking. If you feel that I am showing weakness by saying this, I am not showing weakness. From a king's family, thought should be big and heart should be big,' he added.
Later, Pradyot expressed concern over illegal immigration and warned that illegal immigrants could decide the election outcome in 2028. 'You (people) have heard that the home minister and the Supreme Court said that illegal immigrants don't have the right to stay in India. I have been saying this for the last 10 years I have also filed an NRC case. The case is still with the Supreme Court. This is very important because today Rohingya and Bangladeshis are not only coming here but they are getting voter IDs and ration cards.'
'These people will decide who will be our MLAs, MPs, and chief minister in 2028. We should not allow this. So, I ask all my MLAs to talk to SDMs, BDOs, and DM in their respective areas to know who are getting ration cards illegally, who are sitting illegally and who are trying to become voters of India illegally. The day when they become voters, they will play with our future, they will play with your children's future. This is not the time to fight, it is time to unite to stop all these illegal Bangladeshis. We need to save India and Tripura. We need to stop them from getting illegal cards. For this we need to be one,' he added in the Facebook video.

Pradyot: Will pull out of BJP alliance if Tiprasa Accord not implemented
Agartala: Tensions have reached a boiling point between Tipra Motha and BJP in Tripura, as Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarman has issued a stark warning to the coalition partner. Pradyot has threatened to withdraw from the alliance if the Tiprasa Accord, a key agreement signed before the last Lok Sabha elections, is not implemented in its "true spirit and form." The discord was further fuelled by accusations from Pradyot and MLA Ranjit Debbarma, who have criticised the BJP's state leadership for failing to honour their commitments. The situation intensified when tribal welfare minister Bikash Debbarma returned from Delhi, claiming that BJP plans to address the autonomous body's concerns through the 125th Amendment of the Constitution, contingent on winning the upcoming Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections. Pradyot swiftly countered these claims, asserting that no such promises were made by Union home ministry officials. In a Facebook Live session, he accused BJP leaders in Tripura of misleading the tribal community with baseless assurances. Pradyot issued a stern warning that if BJP continues to betray its commitments, Tipra Motha will reconsider its support for the state govt. MLA Ranjit Debbarma echoed this sentiment, stating that Tipra will end its alliance if the BJP does not fulfill its promises promptly. This development highlights a growing divide between Pradyot and the BJP leadership in Tripura. While BJP representatives are eager to convey assurances from Delhi, Pradyot insists that tribal voters must not be swayed by "false guarantees." He even suggested that Tipra Motha might contest the upcoming ADC election independently, without BJP's involvement. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Pushed across the border, 8 months pregnant Bengal woman arrested in Bangladesh
Eight months pregnant Sunali Bibi is 'stateless'. Weeks after she was detained along with her husband and eight-year-old son in Delhi and pushed into Bangladesh on suspicion of being illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, the 29-year-old woman from West Bengal's Birbhum district was arrested by Bangladesh Police on Thursday for being 'illegal infiltrators'. Bibi, her son, and husband were arrested from Chapainawabganj district, Bangladesh police said, adding that another family from West Bengal – Sweety Bibi (32) with her two sons, aged 6 and 16 years – was also arrested from the area. This comes as the Calcutta High Court is hearing the habeas corpus petitions filed by the families of the two women. 'They were pushed into Bangladesh from Kurigram (bordering Assam). Thereafter, they spent some days in Dhaka, mostly on the streets. For the past month, they have been residing in Chapainawabganj district. We have arrested them. We have found Indian documents from them. They will be produced in the court tomorrow (Friday). The court will decide. All legal proceedings will be undertaken according to the law of our country. Since women and children are there, we are handling the issue with due respect and sympathy,' Rezaul Karim, the police superintendent of Chapainawabganj, told The Indian Express over the phone from Bangladesh. The family of Sunali Bibi hails from Birbhum district in West Bengal. Members of her family worked as ragpickers and domestic helpers in Delhi for the past two decades. Like Sunali, Sweety Bibi (32) and her two minor sons, hail from a village in Birbhum. They were also detained and pushed into Bangladesh at the same time. Both families were detained in Delhi's K N Katju Marg police station and then deported. A video of Sunali and others appealing for help from an undisclosed location in Bangladesh following their deportation had gone viral on social media. Reacting to their arrest in Bangladesh, the chairman of West Bengal Migrant Labour Welfare Board, Samirul Islam, said it was a matter of 'grave concern'. 'Sunali is pregnant and children are with them. They are all residents of West Bengal, and we will bring them back in all possible legal ways. Already the matter is being heard by the court,' Islam, a TMC Rajya Sabha member, said. Hearing their habeas corpus pleas, the Division Bench of Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty and Justice Reetobroto Kumar Mitra on Wednesday called the matter 'very serious' after Additional Solicitor General Ashok Chakraborty, representing the Centre, said it 'cannot be heard' in the Calcutta High Court since it is pending in the Supreme Court. The Bench, however, scheduled the next hearing on September 10, saying, 'It is a serious issue and there should not be a conflicting decision'. This comes close on the heels of detentions of Bengali migrant labourers in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Delhi, and Madhya Pradesh during the drive to nab illegal Bangladeshis. A total of nine residents of West Bengal, who were detained in Mumbai and Rajasthan, and pushed into Bangladesh. have been brought back after the intervention of the West Bengal government.
