Michigan starting PG leaves shortly after Elliot Cadeau's arrival

Michigan starting PG leaves shortly after Elliot Cadeau's arrival Elliot Cadeau committed to Michigan. Does UNC go after the Wolverines' 2024-2025 starting PG?
The North Carolina Tar Heels have plenty of roster questions they need to address in the transfer portal, highlighted by landing a starting point guard.
Elliot Cadeau improved over the past two seasons as UNC's starter, but he entered his name in the transfer portal and, shortly after, committed to Michigan. North Carolina is welcoming Class of 2025 combo guards Derek Dixon and Isaiah Denis, either of whom can run the point, but the need for more collegiate experience looms large.
With Cadeau's arrival in Ann Arbor followed the departure of Tre Donaldson, who started at point guard for the Wolverines. Donaldson averaged 11.3 points and 4.1 assists per game, the latter figure leading his teammates, but Donaldson knew that Cadeau's arrival means a dip in playing time for him.
Donaldson is now in the portal, announcing his decision to enter it on April 1 – and the Tar Heels should seriously considering adding a guard of his experience to their roster.
Not only did Donaldson average career highs during Michigan's run to the Sweet 16, but Donaldson has previous Power 4 experience, playing his first two collegiate seasons at Auburn. Donaldson thrived in his first year under Dustry May, starting all 37 games for the Wolverines.
It's not often you see two teams swap point guards, as larger deals are typically involved, but we're talking about the collegiate transfer portal here. There isn't any reported interest between Donaldson and UNC, but he'd be a great 1-year rental in Chapel Hill.

Steelers disrespected in ESPN power rankings, Mike Tomlin named under most pressure

Despite completely overhauling their roster this offseason with Pro Bowlers, First-Team All-Pros, Super Bowl champions, and MVP winners, the Pittsburgh Steelers are still being underestimated by ESPN. According to ESPN's latest power rankings, the Steelers are right in the middle of the pack — listed as the No. 16 team. ESPN's Brooke Pryor also selected HC Mike Tomlin as the person under the most pressure heading into 2025 — which can be read below: "For the second season in a row, Tomlin was the driving force in bringing in a veteran quarterback to lead the franchise," Pryor wrote. "This time, he courted Aaron Rodgers. Tomlin is putting his trust in Rodgers and the rest of his offense that they can expedite the gelling process and produce early in 2025. Realistically, Tomlin, under contract through the 2027 season, isn't going anywhere no matter the outcome of this season. But the fan base will undoubtedly grow restless if another season passes without a playoff win." Everything Pryor wrote about Tomlin is right on the money — but the Steelers' overall placement as the 16th-best team makes little sense. With Pro Bowl-level talent galore on the defensive side of the ball and a completely retooled offense, Pittsburgh deserves a top-10 placement at least. Freshman Bear Bachmeier to start at QB for BYU

Bear Bachmeier has won the quarterback competition at BYU, coach Kalani Sitake said Tuesday. "He settled it on the field. He gives us the best chance to win right now," Sitake said. He will become the first true freshman in program history to start Week 1 when the Cougars open against Portland State on Aug. 30, ESPN reported. Bachmeier will wear the unusual QB number of 47, which he showed off in a social media video while dressed as a bear. It's a quick turn for BYU, which saw starter Jake Retzlaff withdraw from school on July 11 amid news BYU intended to suspend him for seven games over a violation of the school's honor code. Retzlaff now is at Tulane. Bachmeier initially committed to Stanford and spent the spring in Palo Alto, but he entered the transfer portal in May and headed to BYU. Transferring with him from Stanford was his older brother, Tiger. Tiger caught 46 passes for 476 yards and two touchdowns over two seasons at Stanford. The Bachmeier name could sound familiar. Oldest brother Hank concluded his six-year career as a college quarterback in 2024 with Wake Forest after previously playing for Boise State and Louisiana Tech. Bear was a four-star recruit, as ranked by the 247Sports composite, in the Class of 2025. Tiger was a three-star in the 2023 class. The brothers are from Murrieta, Calif. Bachmeier bested transfers Treyson Bourguet, a redshirt junior from Western Michigan, and redshirt sophomore McCae Hillstead from Utah State, to win the starting job. The Cougars finished 11-2 in 2024 in his second season in the Big 12. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved

Michigan pulls another star recruit, No. 2 RB in '26

Michigan landed the No. 2 running back recruit for the 2026 class when Savion Hiter committed to the Wolverines, ESPN reported Tuesday. In his junior season at Virginia's Louisa County High School in 2024, Hiter rushed for 1,698 yards on 156 carries with 26 rushing touchdowns. Hiter is a five-star recruit ranked No. 9 in the country, No. 1 at running back and No. 1 in Virginia, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. The senior from Mineral, Va., chose Michigan over finalists Georgia, Ohio State and Tennessee. The boost for the Michigan backfield comes a week after the Wolverines' program was fined upward of $25 million by the NCAA for an advanced-scouting sign-stealing scheme dating back to the 2021-23 seasons. Michigan also received a 2026 commitment from highly regarded quarterback Brady Smigiel in April. Smigiel is the No. 44-ranked player in the ESPN 300, while Hiter is ranked No. 24 overall. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved
