UAE aims to be a hub for shaping future: Sheikh Hamdan
The UAE continues to strengthen its technological capabilities through exemplary partnerships with major global technology developers, actively promoting collaborations to drive new trends, with artificial intelligence being a prime example, he said in a statement during his visit to the offices of Google in Dubai Innovation Hub, a Wam news agency report said.
Upon his arrival at the company's headquarters, HH Sheikh Hamdan was welcomed by Ruth Porat, President and Chief Investment Officer of Alphabet and Google; Anthony Nakache, Managing Director of Google in the Middle East and North Africa; and several company executives, who expressed appreciation for the UAE as an inspiring model in harnessing advanced technologies and AI solutions.
The visit reflects the strong synergy between the UAE and the global tech company, particularly in artificial intelligence and advanced technologies. The partnership dates back to 2008, when Google opened its offices in Dubai – the largest in the Middle East and North Africa – highlighting a collaboration that supports the leadership's vision for the UAE's digital transformation journey.
HH Sheikh Hamdan was apprised about Google's efforts in the field of artificial intelligence, including the company's contributions through tools like the Gemini personal assistant and the NotebookLM application for research and writing – both powered by AI. HH Sheikh Hamdan's visit was also marked by a preview of the Google Economic Impact Report for 2024, which highlighted economic spinoffs from Google products like Search, YouTube, Maps, Cloud and Ads.
The report explores the overall impact of Google's products and services and the value the company provides to users, businesses, and communities across the UAE. This marks the first time Google has released such a report for the country.
He was also briefed on the Google Accessibility Discovery Center in Dubai, which opened in September 2024. This facility is one of only seven worldwide and is the first and only of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa region.
Google executives reaffirmed the company's commitment to supporting the UAE's digital transformation goals, as demonstrated in training and capacity-building initiatives. Notably, Google has trained around 420,000 individuals in AI and how to leverage its technologies for business growth through its 'Grow with Google' programme.
At the conclusion of the visit, Sheikh Hamdan expressed his appreciation for Google's significant role in the UAE and the broader region, reaffirming Dubai's commitment to harnessing technological advancements to accelerate sustainable development and shape the future. He reiterated Dubai's goal of becoming a leading global hub for technological innovation through strategic partnerships with influential companies like Google.
Sheikh Hamdan was accompanied during the visit by Omar bin Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications; and Helal Saeed Al Marri, Director-General of the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism.
Dubai considers the development and co-creation of future technologies – especially AI – a strategic priority. This focus is a core pillar of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, which aims to generate an average of AED100 billion annually in economic value from digital transformation and to position Dubai as a global capital of the digital economy and a key player in the international digital landscape, the report added.

Elon Musk Unveils Grok Update After Controversial Posts
Tech billionaire Elon Musk on Wednesday unveiled a new update to his Grok AI chatbot, a day after it posted controversial content across social media platform X. Earlier this week, Grok 3 made allegedly anti-Semitic comments, cited what appeared to be false information about an X user in connection with the recent deadly floods in Texas, made statements praising Adolf Hitler, and at one point, described itself as 'MechaHitler,' causing the term to trend on X on Tuesday. Musk's xAI company, which develops the chatbot, released a statement Tuesday on the Grok account, saying it is 'actively working to remove the inappropriate posts' and has 'taken action to ban hate speech before Grok posts on X.' 'Grok 4 is the first time, in my experience, that an AI has been able to solve difficult, real-world engineering questions where the answers cannot be found anywhere on the Internet or in books. And it will get much better,' Musk wrote in a post on Thursday. In a livestreamed event, Musk also touted the capabilities of the latest Grok update, calling Grok 4 'the smartest AI in the world.' 'It really is remarkable to see the advancement of artificial intelligence, how quickly it is evolving,' he said. 'I would expect Grok to discover new technologies that are actually useful no later than next year, and maybe end of this year. And it might discover new physics next year.' Responding to the controversy over the recent posts, Musk said that the comments posted by Grok 3 earlier in the week were because the chatbot was 'too compliant to user prompts. Too eager to please and be manipulated.' 'That is being addressed,' Musk wrote in a July 9 post on X. Musk last month promised to upgrade Grok, suggesting there was 'far too much garbage in any foundation model trained on uncorrected data.' The announcement from Musk follows high-profile AI advancements that were released by Google, OpenAI, and other tech companies in recent months. Big tech companies have been spending heavily on AI as they view the new technology as a major growth engine, while slashing costs elsewhere to safeguard profits. Some current and former employees at OpenAI and Google warned in an open letter that 'serious risks' could be posed by AI and called for greater protections. The letter warned that AI could lead to 'the further entrenchment of existing inequalities, to manipulation and misinformation, to the loss of control of autonomous AI systems potentially resulting in human extinction.' During the Grok 4 launch, Musk briefly referred to AI safety and said that he wants Grok to be 'maximally truth-seeking.' On Wednesday, X CEO Linda Yaccarino stepped down from the company, though there was no known connection between her decision and the content posted by Grok. She did not refer to the Grok controversy in her farewell statement, posted to her account. 'I'm incredibly proud of the X team – the historic business turn around we have accomplished together has been nothing short of remarkable,' she wrote. Reuters contributed to this report. Emirates Adds 5th China Route Daily Dubai-Hangzhou Flights
Dubai-based carrier Emirates officially launched its new daily service to Hangzhou, China. This would be the 5th route to the Chinese mainland and the second new destination added to the airline's roster in under a month, following Shenzhen. The launch took place on 30th July with a debut flight from Dubai to Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport. Passengers aboard the new flight EK310 were welcomed by local dignitaries, airport officials, a ceremonial water cannon salute and received memorabilia from the airport. The inaugural flight carried passengers from across Emirates' global network, including key markets like the UAE, Nigeria, Italy, Spain, Saudi Arabia, and Brazil, as well as a VIP delegation led by Emirates' senior management and members of the international media. 'China has become one of the world's leading aviation markets, and Emirates is proud to have played a role in its development. Adding two new gateways within just one month is a major milestone that underscores our deepening commitment to the Chinese mainland,' said Adnan Kazim, Emirates' Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer, regarding the launch. Kazim explained that the expansion demonstrated the conviction of the company's East and Southeast Asia growth strategy, which has gained momentum over the past year. With rising demand, Kazim is optimistic that its global network will continue connecting people, businesses, and economies across Asia and beyond. Emirates remains committed to delivering seamless, reliable connectivity between this dynamic region and the world. 'We extend our sincere appreciation to the Civil Aviation Administration of China, Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport, and all our local partners for their invaluable support in enabling the successful start of this route,' said Kazim. The Emirates Boeing 777-300ER (EK310) is scheduled to depart Dubai at 09:40 AM and arrive in Hangzhou at 22:00 PM. The return flight, EK311, departs Hangzhou at 00:10 AM, landing in Dubai at 04:55 AM. Emirates is said to offer optimal connectivity for customers from 40 destinations in Europe, 21 in Africa, 13 in the Middle East, as well as Brazil and Argentina, to Hangzhou via Dubai. The airline also offers convenient two-way connections from Hangzhou to key cities including Istanbul, Barcelona, Cairo, and Johannesburg via Dubai. The Boeing 777-300ER wide-body aircraft is said to offer up to 16 tonnes of bellyhold cargo capacity per flight, enabling the transport of time-sensitive shipments such as e-commerce goods, pharmaceuticals, smart devices, and other high-value products. With a well-defined digital infrastructure in place, Hangzhou serves as a key international gateway for Chinese brands. With Emirates SkyCargo's expansive network spanning six continents and high-speed connectivity through its Dubai hub, goods from Hangzhou and the broader Yangtze River Delta can reach emerging markets in the Middle East, Africa, South Asia, and Latin America faster, reducing delivery timelines and enhancing supply chain performance. Emirates now operates 49 weekly flights to five major Chinese cities: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Hangzhou. Its signature complimentary chauffeur-drive service for First and Business Class passengers is also available to passengers flying to Hangzhou. With the addition of Hangzhou to its growing Chinese mainland network, Emirates is building a powerful air corridor for trade, tourism, and digital exchanges between China and the Middle East, as well as beyond. The new route will further open new opportunities for Chinese brands to reach a global audience while offering customers from across Emirates' global network better access to this powerful tech hub. Through interline and codeshare agreements with China Southern Airlines, Air China and Sichuan Airlines, Emirates provides enhanced connectivity to destinations beyond its network across China. Travellers from the UAE and other GCC countries can visit China visa-free for up to 30 days, making both business and leisure travel to the Chinese mainland even more convenient. Saudi EV Buyers Have Tesla As Choice - How Soon Before More Chinese Brands Join In?
More Saudi car buyers are in the mood to give EVs a chance with more dealerships in the Kingdom set to announce tie ups with leading Chinese carmakers to speed up the process. After what seems like a long gestation period, Tesla finally opened its first outlet in April, while Saudi-backed luxury EV brand Lucid Motors has done some of the preparatory work in creating a conducive environment for non-fuel automotive options. But as happened in UAE, a range of Chinese-made EVs are set to be introduced in the Gulf's biggest car market over the coming months. (In the UAE, more than 10 Chinese EV brands made their debut starting late 2023/early 2024 and until now, and many of them have started to pick up buyer backing for them.) By end 2024, new car registrations of EVs in the UAE made up around 4%-5%, according to estimates – in Saudi Arabia, it was 1% of new car sales. 'Saudi banks are starting to offer favourable EV auto financing options, and dealers are working with insurers to come up with buyer-friendly packages,' said a dealer source. 'The UAE auto market created the blueprint to launch and push new EV brands. It can easily be replicated in a market like Saudi Arabia.' The Saudi car market is expected to account for 600,000 plus units a year by the end of the decade. If EV sales can make up 10%-15% by then, the game is on, say auto analysts. 'The EV penetration in Saudi Arabia is relatively low compared to UAE,' said Vishal Pandey, Director of Dubai-based Glasgow Consultancy Group. 'However, given the emphasis from Saudi Government on electrification, there is high likelihood that growth is going to be faster. 'There is still a perception issue among Saudi consumers in regards to EVs, as they are concerned about the high cost of acquisition, charging infrastructure, and the after-market service. Plus, there is also the resale value.'
