Arsenal legend Ian Wright backs football club's shirt change for poignant reason
The one-off shirts will be worn for the club's home game against Merthyr Town on Saturday.
Trading the usual three vertical blue stripes for a single diagonal blue stripe, the redesigned kit aims to highlight the importance of wearing a seatbelt.
The campaign, organised by the AA Charitable Trust, will extend beyond the shirts to include "Buckle Up" messaging on perimeter boards, napkins, car park flags, and even beer mats at the Winklebury Football Complex stadium.
Wright, 61, emphasised the life-saving potential of seatbelts: "Wearing a seat belt is the simplest thing you can do to protect yourself when you're in a car, no matter if you're driving or getting a lift. It reduces the risk of death in a crash by 50 per cent."
Analysis by the AA Charitable Trust found 43 per cent of passengers aged 17-29 who died in crashes on Britain's roads between 2019 and 2023 were unbelted.
The figure for passengers of all ages was 27 per cent.
The analysis also found 29 per cent of young drivers who die in crashes are not wearing a seat belt, of which 95 per cent are male.
AA Charitable Trust director Edmund King said: 'For any football club, young players are their most valuable assets and therefore ensuring they stay safe on the roads is vitally important.
' Research shows that teenagers are most at risk from serious injury as passengers or drivers when unbelted.
'Even on short journeys it's absolutely vital to wear your seat belt.
'We hope this initiative will inspire other clubs to consider backing our campaign and even switching their kits for a one-off match.'
Drivers can be handed a £100 on-the-spot fixed penalty notice if they are caught not wearing a seat belt when they are supposed to.
If the case goes to court they could be fined up to £500.
The AA Charitable Trust has previously called for new drivers caught behind the wheel unbelted to be handed six penalty points, meaning they could lose their licence.
Future of roads minister Lilian Greenwood said: 'This eye-catching campaign is a brilliant way to reach young people with a life-saving message.
'Buckling up takes seconds but cuts your risk of death in half.
'With so many young passengers still not wearing seat belts, this football partnership is exactly the kind of creative thinking we need to keep our young people safe.
'Our Think! Click campaign similarly reminds young drivers and passengers to belt up on every journey, and in every seat.'
Basingstoke Town chairman Jack Miller said: 'The seat belt kit is a striking reminder of a simple action that saves lives, and we're proud to wear it.
'Hopefully, it sparks conversations and makes a lasting impact.'

Marc Guehi gets Liverpool transfer warning with £35m move causing divide
Liverpool have attempted to sign Crystal Palace skipper Marc Guehi this summer, but former Arsenal forward Ian Wright feels it wouldn't be the right time to move to Anfield for the England ace Ian Wright has urged Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi to snub any further advances from Liverpool this summer to protect his chances of representing England in the 2026 World Cup. Despite having held discussions with the current Premier League champions, it's understood that there's a gap in valuations between the two clubs. Football can be unpredictable and a move is still possible this month. But Palace manager Oliver Glasner is reluctant to let his Community Shield-winning captain depart as the new season begins this weekend. The 25-year-old looks more likely to now leave on a free transfer next summer – should he not renew his contract – giving Liverpool the opportunity to wait and sign him without having to pay a fee. Liverpool currently have a few options at centre-back, including Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate. However, with Jarell Quansah now at Bayer Leverkusen, Arne Slot is looking for another addition to the defence. Fortunately for the Reds, they have just finalised a £26million deal with Italian side Parma for 18-year-old centre-back Giovanni Leoni. A medical has been scheduled, potentially putting an end to any late summer move for Guehi – much to Wright's apparent satisfaction. Guehi remains on their radar, though, and could potentially be secured on a reduced fee before the transfer window closes or as a free agent next summer. Yet Premier League icon Wright believes a move this summer would be detrimental to Guehi, considering the upcoming international preparations for next year's World Cup. Speaking on The Overlap's Stick to Football podcast, the former Arsenal striker insists the 25-year-old should remain in south London for another campaign. Wright said: "If you look at someone like Guehi right, why would you leave now? It's a World Cup year, you don't want to go somewhere you might not play because Konate's still there isn't he?" Fellow pundits Gary Neville and Roy Keane suggested that Guehi's mentality would likely focus on securing a starting position with the Reds, but Wright countered by adding: "Will he start if Konate is there? Will he start?" Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher offered his perspective, suggesting that Guehi could arrive at Anfield and challenge Konate for the starting spot, given his credentials as an international performer and Palace success story. The ex-Reds defender said: "I think the fact that he [Konate] is injury prone and the fact he hasn't signed as well. The longer he doesn't sign, I think the more the manager will say, 'If you're not committed, you're not playing.' "Because before, Liverpool had them two centre-backs and the lad behind him was Quansah who's left, that wasn't competition, that was just an understudy. He's [Guehi] an England international. This is like, 'I'm going for your place, Im fighting with you for the position', and the longer he doesn't sign." Regarding their pursuit of Guehi, Liverpool launched the opening bid with an offer reaching £35m – £30m upfront plus £5m in performance-related bonuses. Though no deal appears likely with the difference in valuations, and Guehi is willing to honour his current contract this season at Selhurst Park. For Leoni, meanwhile, he is set to immediately join the first team, with a loan move being dismissed. Leoni will join Liverpool's other major summer acquisitions, including Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Hugo Ekitike as they prepare for the new season. Speaking to the media on Thursday, boss Slot remained tight-lipped regarding his views on Guehi, deflecting enquiries towards Palace rather than the centre-back's potential new destination. Addressing both Leoni and Guehi, he said: "The clubs have agreed a deal but he hasn't signed for us yet. The moment when he signs for us, I can go into more detail. "And the other one (Guehi) is of course the answer you always get from me. No, (I cannot go into more detail) because he is not our player and unfortunately he was the captain of the team where we lost against last Sunday. "No, if you want to have any talks about him, you should go to Palace, to (Oliver) Glasner and ask him his opinion about him." Roy Keane's telling reaction to Ian Wright's Arsenal prediction with three problems fixed
Arsenal faced a myriad of issues last season as they finished behind champions Liverpool, but with their problems now supposedly addressed, Ian Wright and Roy Keane have talked up the club's title chances Ian Wright believes Arsenal will win the Premier League this season after the Gunners addressed three problem areas - and Roy Keane agrees. This comes after the former Manchester United star had previously rubbished Arsenal's chances at the back end of last season. Arsenal are coming into the new campaign off the back of three second placed finishes in the last three years. Last season, Mikel Arteta's side were ravaged by injuries in the forward department, were accused of being lightweight in midfield and suffered from a lack of goals as Liverpool cruised to their 20th top-flight title by ten points. The two previous years they lost out to Manchester City. Speaking on The Overlap podcast, former United captain Gary Neville asked Arsenal icon Wright whether Arteta's team could finally capture their first title since 2004. Beforehand however, he listed the trio of problems that Arsenal now seem to have dealt with, with the north London side now having players fit, while having brought in Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad and the free-scoring Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP. Neville, speaking to Wright, said: "Last season, three problems - injuries to [Bukayo] Saka and [Kai] Havertz obviously caused big problems, obviously you have to keep players fit. "You had a problem in midfield and you've got Zubimendi come in and you had a problem up top, with presence really, and Gyokeres has come in. Does that give them the 'difference' to win the League?" Wright responded: "I hope so. I think so, because we've added to a team that's finished second three times now and we've added goals to it. "You know, Zubimendi, especially with that mid-block [in the opposition] we can't break, Zubimendi the way he plays, I'm watching him break through [the mid-block]. You've got Gyokeres who can score a goal. You look at the fact that [ Arsenal ] were 17 goals behind Liverpool [last season] but defensively we're brilliant. "So if we can sort that out, and this mid-block [problem] then yeah, I'm going to go for Arsenal again, of course I am, because absolutely, why wouldn't I?" He continued: "What's good about us as well is the [contract] renewals. Saka, in good form now, he's probably going to renew. Gabriel, Ethan [Nwaneri], and for [Arsenal sporting director, Andrea] Berta to come in, and he's unbelievable when you meet him, Berta's done the deals, he's got it done." With caveats, Keane agreed with Wright, suggesting that Arsenal really have solved their issues, saying: "Yeah, I'm going with Arsenal," before warning that Liverpool's ability to score under pressure could still be the deciding factor. "The only thing, and I'll go back to Liverpool, and Liverpool on a bad day, when they're off they can score three goals," he said. "Even in the [Community] Shield at the weekend, [where they lost to Crystal Palace on penalties] they still scored two goals. And if you're scoring two goals on average every game, then that's hard to stop." However, Wright, unperturbed, reiterated: "We finished second three times, why would I go someone else?". Speaking at the end of last season, Arteta admitted that it hurt to watch Liverpool celebrate their second title in five years. He also hinted at the factors that prevented Arsenal from finally reaching the promised land for the first time in 21 years. "My motivations are much more focused in other aspects than that one but it hurts to watch it, that's for sure," Arteta said. "They've [Liverpool] done it in a manner, in a way, that has given no chance to the others. You have to congratulate that as well and you have to accept that there are reasons why you haven't been able to achieve it and try to improve." The Spaniard will now be hoping those problem areas have finally been addressed as Arsenal begin their assault on the title for 2025/2026 against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
