West Indies Test captain Chase reveals
A couple of days ago, Chase was named the West Indies skipper after Shai Hope opted out of the running for the Test captaincy, preferring to focus on his responsibilities in the shorter formats.
Chase, who will now follow in the footsteps of Frank Worrell, Garfield Sobers, Clive Lloyd, and Viv Richards, reflected on his journey and reminisced about the days when he was 18 and looking to break into the Barbados team.
'I was a student at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill at the time, and I would be taking a lot of leave to go and play like in the first-class competition. I wasn't cemented in the Barbados team at that stage. So my mother encouraged me, but gave me an ultimatum that I will be given two years to make myself a permanent fixture in the Barbados team, or I will have to go to school permanently,' Chase said as quoted from ESPNcricinfo.
'I loved cricket more than school. I was always a good student, but cricket was my love. I worked hard, and I'm glad that she gave me that ultimatum because that really was the driving force for me to carry my cricket to the next level,' he added.
The 33-year-old, who has 49 Test appearances under his belt, went on to highlight the instrumental role his father played during his journey and added, 'He would come and watch all my games, and talk to me about the game, [like] where I need to improve or I need to work on - the dos and don'ts.'
The Caribbean side's Test schedule is thinner than most other sides. However, Chase feels the weight of history, considering that in the 1980s, the West Indies was arguably the best in the red-ball format.
'Captaining the West Indies is a great job to have, and there's a legacy attached to it. Playing for the West Indies means everything to me, so I'm ready for the responsibilities which come with the job,' he said.
West Indies will participate in 13 fixtures in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle, which is about to commence. Chase's first assignment as West Indies captain will be a three-match home Test series against Australia, set to begin on June 25 in Bridgetown. (ANI)

Cincinnati Open: Sabalenka-Rybakina set quarterfinal clash
Cincinnati [US], August 14 (ANI): The top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka reached one step closer to the honour of defending her Cincinnati Open title successfully, as she defeated Jessica Bouzas Maneiro on Wednesday night in their fourth-round match. The world number one needed one hour and 20 minutes to wrap up Jessica by 6-1, 7-5 and seal a clash against Elena Rybakina. After an easy first set, it was not easy for Sabalenka in the second one. Once leading 4-2, heading towards a straight win, Jessica bounced back to win three games on bounce to tale a 5-4 lead in the second set. She was two points away from winning the set and enforcing a decider, but Sabalenka's late comeback ended the match. 'Jessica is a great player," Sabalenka said after the match as quoted by WTA's official website.'I knew coming into the night that I would have to work for every point. She did not start well at the beginning, but then she found her rhythm, and it was a really tough battle. I'm super happy to get this win in straight sets. I did not want to stay here for three hours," she added. Sabalenka also became the first player to secure 50 wins on the WTA Tour this year, registering the milestone for the third successive season. On the other hand, Rybakina, in a top-10 clash against Madison Keys, came out on top with a 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-2 win. Olympics bronze medalist Indian hockey legend Vece Paes passes away
New Delhi [India], August 14 (ANI): Indian hockey legend and Olympic bronze medalist Vece Paes, also the father of tennis legend Leander Paes, passed away on Thursday morning. The official X of Hockey India (HI) announced his unfortunate demise at the age of 80. 'Dr. Vece Paes, a true sports icon, sadly passed away this morning. His achievements on and off the field inspired generations. As a member of the 1972 Munich Olympics bronze-winning team, he made India proud. His legacy will live on. #RIPVecePaes #HockeyIndia." In the statement issued on their official website minutes later, Hockey India termed Vece as a 'charismatic" midfielder from the 'golden era of Indian Hockey". Vece helped India earn their sole medal of the 1972 Olympics at Munich, Germany, a bronze medal in field hockey. India secured the bronze medal by beating the Netherlands in a well-contested match 2-1 in September 1972. Germany went on to win the gold, while Pakistan won the silver. He also represented India in the Hockey World Cup, a part of the 1971 team which finished third in Barcelona. 24 years after his achievement, Laender made his father proud with a men's singles bronze medal in tennis during the 1996 Olympics Games, making him the first-ever Asian to secure an Olympic medal in the sport and only Indian till date. 'It is a sad day for us in Hockey India. The passing of Dr Paes draws curtains on a great era of hockey. The Olympic medal in Munich is a testament to their grit and determination. I had the good fortune of meeting him a few times, and I have always been inspired by his passion for sports in general. He was a great advocate of inculcating a sporting culture in the country. His son, Leander Paes, often spoke of his father's influence and inspiration in shaping his own sporting career, particularly his passion for representing India at the Olympics. In addition to hockey, he showed his skills by playing divisional cricket, football, and rugby. His love for rugby led him to become the president of the Indian Rugby Football Union from 1996 to 2002. (ANI)
