Trump reiterates threat of levying 10% tariff on BRICS members

US President Donald Trump yesterday reiterated his threat of levying a 10-per cent tariff on imports from BRICS group members, saying the group of developing nations would end very quickly if they ever formed in a meaningful way. Trump announced the new tariff on July 6, saying it would apply to any countries aligning themselves with what he termed the 'anti-American policies' of the BRICS group. However, BRICS leaders have rejected that allegation. President Donald Trump yesterday reiterated his threat of levying a 10-per cent tariff on imports from BRICS members. "When I heard about this group from BRICS, six countries, basically, I hit them very, very hard. And if they ever really form in a meaningful way, it will end very quickly," Trump said. He said he is committed to preserving the US dollar's global status as a reserve currency. "When I heard about this group from BRICS, six countries, basically, I hit them very, very hard. And if they ever really form in a meaningful way, it will end very quickly," Trump said without naming the countries. "We can never let anyone play games with us," he was quoted as saying by global newswires. He is committed to preserving the US dollar's global status as a reserve currency and pledged to never allow the creation of a central bank digital currency in America, Trump said. Despite Brazil nixing BRICS plans to push for a common currency in February this year, the group is mulling over a cross-border payment system called BRICS Pay that would facilitate trade and financial transactions in local currencies. The BRICS group expanded last year beyond its core members, i.e., Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, to include other countries like Iran and Indonesia. Leaders at the group's summit in Brazil indirectly criticised US military and trade policies. Fibre2Fashion News Desk (DS)

AAP collapsing, brick by brick… sooner than expected, says Punjab Congress' Warring

With Kharar MLA Anmol Gagan Mann saying that she has resigned from the Vidhan Sabha, the Opposition Congress said that the Arvind Kejriwal-led party has started 'collapsing', while BJP termed the ruling AAP leader's move 'a betrayal and treachery against the five-year mandate given by the people'. Leading the attack the ruling party was Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring who said Maan was the second AAP legislator to be 'out of the party' in less than a month. The AAP on June 29 suspended Amritsar North MLA and former IPS officer Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh for five years for allegedly indulging in anti-party activities. 'The rate at which the MLAs have started to quit or are made to quit suggests that the party's countdown has begun sooner than we expected. The AAP is collapsing, and it is happening brick by brick,' said Warring. The Congress leader pointed out that only three days ago, Maan had met the party convener, Arvind Kejriwal and had said, 'his dream of uplifting society always fills us with courage and inspiration'. What happened to that 'courage and inspiration' within three days, Warring asked. Warring said if the AAP's own MLAs are feeling so much 'alienated' and 'disillusioned' that they are quitting the party, what would be the plight of the common man who does not have any privileges like those of the legislators? Observing that all is not well in the AAP, he pointed out, 'One MLA was suspended from the party and within less than a month another MLA has resigned, even saying to have quit politics'. 'While it, indeed, is the AAP's internal matter, but when a fire breaks out inside the house, the flames do get noticed far and wide and cannot be overlooked,' the Congress leader said. BJP leader Vineet Joshi said Maan's resignation as Kharar MLA is a 'betrayal and treachery' with the five-year mandate given by the people. Before her, MLA Kanwar Sandhu remained absent from the assembly constituency for four years, and now Anmol's resignation within three years of getting elected clearly shows that the AAP is repeatedly 'betraying' Kharar by fielding 'wrong' candidates, the BJP leader said. Joshi further said that Maan's tenure of three years and four months for the Kharar Assembly constituency was nothing short of a bad dream. 'The people of Kharar city, Kurali, New Chandigarh, Nayagaon Municipal Committee, and most villages were deprived of even seeing the face of their MLA, who was also a minister for some time,' he said in a statement. On the rare days she did venture out, JCB machines accompanied her, and people's shops and homes were demolished, he alleged. 'When the Punjab government tried to illegally and forcibly seize farmers' land in Jhajjheri, Maan was missing,' Joshi alleged. Similarly, when thousands of homes faced demolition in the Nayagaon municipality due to the expansion of the Eco-Sensitive Zone from 100 meters to three kilometers, Anmol remained silent initially, he added. Taking a dig, Joshi said, 'If you wanted to quit politics, why did you join in the first place?'

Golden Temple threat mails: Police send data retrieved from arrested engineer's devices for forensic analysis

Amritsar Police has sent the data recovered from devices seized from a software engineer, arrested for sending e-mails threatening to blow up Golden Temple, for forensic analysis. The Punjab Police had Friday detained Shubam Dubey (24) from Faridabad in Haryana, in connection with threat e-mails sent to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). Police said that even after his arrest, more e-mails were received at the SGPC's official e-mail address. According to police sources, the data recovered from Dubey's devices is extensive. 'Our investigation is moving in the right direction. We have been examining the devices belonging to Shubham and will soon crack the case,' said Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar. Sources indicated that the e-mails were not limited to the Golden Temple. Similar emails were reportedly sent to authorities in several cities, including Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, Dehradun, Hyderabad, Delhi, Guwahati, Patna, Imphal, Kochi, Jaipur, Ranchi, Lucknow, Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Bhopal. Meanwhile, Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla slammed Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for not visiting Amritsar even once despite the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee receiving e-mails threatening to blow up the Golden Temple in the past few days. He pointed out that the security around the Golden Temple is the responsibility of the Central and the state governments. 'Today is the sixth day of these threats, but Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has not come here even once,' said Aujla. Aujla appealed to CM Mann to face the people and give them complete information about the matter. 'Why has he himself not come to Amritsar yet?' he asked. The Congress leader said devotees are worried over the bomb threats and slammed the AAP government, saying the issue cannot be resolved by staying 'hidden'. The Amritsar MP said he is in touch with the SGPC, and the government should resolve it as soon as possible. MLA Rana Gurjit Singh said the state government should look into this issue seriously. 'This is the age of technology, and criminals can be reached by using technology,' he said. Meanwhile, Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan visited Golden Temple and addressed concerns about the threat e-mails. He said, 'This is a sacred place where people of all faiths come for peace and protection. The police and administration are investigating the emails sent by mischievous elements. One person has already been arrested, and others will be arrested soon.' Sandhwan added, 'Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann is in constant contact with security agencies and the district administration. We assure everyone on behalf of the Punjab government that there is no threat or cause for concern.' He said Punjab Police is working 'day and night' to maintain security around the Darbar Sahib complex in accordance with established protocols. He appealed to the public not to react to the threats. 'We assure the entire Nanak Naam Leva Sangat that there is no danger. There is no need to be provoked. Have faith in the Guru's house. Our agencies are working to apprehend the culprits.' Separately, BJP's acting Punjab president Ashwani Sharma and national general secretary Tarun Chugh visited the Golden Temple. Sharma said, 'We have not come here as political leaders but as part of the Nanak Naam Leva Sangat.' Sharma questioned the Punjab government's response, saying, 'The state government started acting only three days after the threats. The Chief Minister should have visited on the first day, but it took him four to five days. Even now, the response is not prompt.' He added, 'The government says the culprits have been caught, yet threats are still being received. The state government has made this issue a joke.' Punjab Police has not yet commented on the claims regarding delayed action. The investigation remains ongoing.
