Sharm El-Sheikh Becomes 1st Egyptian Green City to Join Global ICLEI Network
Egypt marked a significant milestone in its environmental journey as Sharm El-Sheikh was officially declared the first Egyptian green city to join the ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, a global network dedicated to sustainable urban development.
The announcement was made by Minister of Environment0 Yasmine Fouad during a high-level ceremony attended by South Sinai Governor Khaled Mubarak, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Guemar Dieb, and Eng. Mohamed Aliewa, Director of the Green Sharm Project.
Fouad described Sharm El-Sheikh's inclusion in ICLEI as the culmination of a years-long transformation, positioning the city as a national and regional leader in environmental sustainability.
She traced the city's green journey back to 2018, when Egypt hosted the UN Biodiversity Conference, which brought international attention to the rich ecosystems of South Sinai and highlighted the country's commitment to integrating local communities in the management of natural reserves.
Momentum grew further when Sharm El-Sheikh hosted the COP27 UN Climate Conference in 2022. Under President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's directive, the city underwent sweeping upgrades, implementing nearly 40 environmental projects to prepare for the summit and to serve as a model for sustainable tourism.
The minister emphasized that the success of sustainability initiatives hinges on public participation, noting that 'the human being is the foundation of sustainability.' She called on citizens to adopt eco-friendly habits such as recycling, resource conservation, and the use of renewable energy, stressing that environmental change begins with individual choices.
The city's green credentials include major investments in solar power, sustainable transport, and waste management. Among the standout achievements are the installation of solar panels generating 51 megawatts of electricity, the construction of 145 kilometers of bicycle lanes, and the implementation of shared bike systems and electric buses. Community engagement has also played a vital role, particularly in solid waste management and biodiversity protection.
Governor Khaled Mubarak hailed the ICLEI membership as a national accomplishment and a direct result of Egypt's strategic vision for sustainable development. He underscored that the green transformation of Sharm El-Sheikh aligns with South Sinai's sustainable development strategy, endorsed by President El-Sisi in 2024, which aims to position the city as a global hub for green tourism.
'Sharm El-Sheikh is no longer just a tourist destination; it is becoming a blueprint for how cities in the region can thrive economically, socially, and environmentally,' Mubarak said. He pointed to the 'Green Sharm' initiative as a turning point, driven by five integrated pillars: clean energy, waste reduction, sustainable transport, water conservation, and biodiversity.
He also highlighted future plans, including a ban on single-use plastics in 50 hotels, increased support for local initiatives, and expanded partnerships with the private sector and international donors. So far, the city has attracted more than \$19.7 million in green financing, with further investments expected.
In turn, Eng. Mohamed Aliewa, head of the Green Sharm project, described the city's ICLEI membership as a pivotal step toward its transformation into a sustainable city. He noted that Sharm El-Sheikh is now the fourth Arab city to join the international network. Aliewa also unveiled an online portal listing all certified green hotels, dive centers, and eco-friendly facilities — a tool designed to guide tourists seeking sustainable travel options.
UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Guemar Dieb praised the city's achievement and Egypt's broader commitment to sustainability. He described Sharm El-Sheikh's transformation as a model for international green development, noting that the city's hosting of COP27 brought global attention to its environmental efforts and solidified its status as a beacon of climate leadership.
Dieb applauded Fouad's role as Egypt's ministerial envoy to COP and her efforts in coordinating across government agencies to raise environmental standards in the city. 'Sharm El-Sheikh's success is a testament to what's possible when leadership, vision, and international cooperation come together,' he said.

Hisham Talaat Moustafa leads Egyptians in Forbes 2025 travel and tourism list
Hisham Talaat Moustafa, CEO and Managing Director of Talaat Moustafa Group Holding (TMG), has been named the top Egyptian leader in Forbes Middle East's 'Top 100 Travel & Tourism Leaders 2025' list for the fourth consecutive year. Hisham Talaat Moustafa advanced three places from last year to rank 12th regionally among the most influential names in the sector. Forbes attributed the ranking to Moustafa's more than 40-year career leading TMG, which currently manages over 5,000 hotel rooms across 11 operational hotels, with five more under development. The group's land bank stands at 125.9 million square metres in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Iraq. TMG recorded cumulative sales of $6.9bn in the first quarter of 2025, and its hotel sector revenues rose by 50% to $69m, accounting for 37% of the group's total revenues of $186m. In May 2025, the group signed a strategic agreement with Oman's Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning to develop two real estate projects, reinforcing its regional presence. The Forbes Middle East ranking methodology included criteria such as the size of the company's business, the number of hotels and rooms, revenues, investment and asset value, and regional presence. It also considered economic impact, asset ownership, the CEO's influence, and significant achievements and initiatives during 2024 and 2025. Hisham Talaat Moustafa has led a significant transformation in the Egyptian tourism sector, notably through the acquisition by TMG's hospitality arm, ICON, of a 51% stake in Legacy Hotels and Tourism Projects. Legacy owns seven historic hotels, including the Marriott Mena House in Cairo, the Sofitel Winter Palace in Luxor, and the Old Cataract in Aswan. This acquisition boosted the group's dollar-denominated income and facilitated new investments in these properties. TMG has also enhanced the standard of hospitality in Egypt through partnerships with international brands like Four Seasons and Kempinski. This has helped to raise hotel room rates in Egypt and attract a new segment of high-spending tourists, contributing to the country's position as a leading luxury tourism destination in the region.

Egypt Launches Fourth Special Train to Support Voluntary Return of Sudanese Citizens
Taarek Refaat Egypt's National Railway Authority on Sunday launched the fourth train service dedicated to supporting the voluntary return of Sudanese citizens residing in Egypt to their home country. The initiative, carried out under the directives of Kamel El-Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, reflects Egypt's commitment to its historic and fraternal ties with Sudan. According to an official statement from the Railway Authority, Train No. 1940 — a third-class air-conditioned service, departed from Ramses Station in Cairo at 11:00 a.m., heading south to Al-Sadd Al-Aali River Port in Aswan, where passengers are set to continue their journey into Sudan via river transport. The train is scheduled to arrive at 11:10 p.m. the same day. The authority emphasized that comprehensive logistical arrangements were made to ensure comfort and dignity for the Sudanese passengers, including the addition of an extra luggage carriage to accommodate personal belongings. The initiative is overseen by a special coordinating committee, tasked with maintaining safety and ensuring that travelers are treated with dignity throughout the process. 'This operation reflects the depth of the people-to-people bond between Egypt and Sudan, built on shared history, geography, and mutual respect,' the statement read. Egypt's Agricultural Museum to reopen on 16 August with two weeks of free entry - Society
Egypt's Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation will hold the trial opening of the Egyptian Agricultural Museum—the world's second-oldest agricultural museum—on 16 August, offering free entry for two weeks ahead of its official inauguration. According to a ministry statement on Sunday, the museum will welcome visitors daily from 9:00am to 3:00pm during the trial period to test services and gather feedback. The opening is part of a broader plan to upgrade the museum's cultural facilities following extensive renovations. Minister of Agriculture Alaa Farouk underscored the museum's historical importance, calling it a living testament to the richness of Egyptian agriculture through the ages. He noted that the opening aligns with the state's strategy to preserve and highlight the cultural heritage of the agricultural sector. Established in 1930 in the former palace of Princess Fatma Ismail, daughter of Khedive Ismail, in Dokki, the museum is second in age only to the Agricultural Museum in Budapest. Originally named the Fouad I Agricultural Museum, it opened to the public in 1938 during King Farouk's reign. The museum traces Egyptian agriculture from the Pharaonic era to the present and is envisioned as a scientific and cultural centre serving researchers, students, and the public. It houses rare artefacts such as ancient farming tools, historical documents, and archaeological plant models, alongside specialized exhibition halls charting the sector's evolution. Its eight sections include the Greek and Roman Museum, the Chinese Friendship Museum, the Scientific and Royal Collections Museum, the Royal Cinema, and the Heritage Library. Farouk expressed hope that the museum will become a leading cultural and tourist destination, describing it as both a heritage landmark and a 'historical record' of Egyptian agriculture.
