PM Modi To Hold Rally, Unveil Over Rs 5000 Cr Worth Of Infra Projects In Bengal Today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to lay the foundation stone, inaugurate, and dedicate to the nation multiple critical infrastructure projects across the Oil and Gas, power, road, and rail sectors in Durgapur, West Bengal. These initiatives, collectively worth over ₹5,000 crore, mark a transformative moment for the state's industrial and infrastructural landscape. The Prime Minister will also hold a political rally in Bengal's Asansol after the inauguration of projects.
Oil & Gas: Catalysing Energy Access and Employment
A major highlight of the visit is the foundation stone laying of the Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) City Gas Distribution (CGD) project in Bankura and Purulia districts. Valued at around ₹1,950 crore, this project aims to provide PNG connections to households, commercial and industrial units, and facilitate CNG distribution through retail outlets. Beyond cleaner energy access, it is expected to generate significant employment opportunities in the region.
The Prime Minister will also dedicate the 132-km Durgapur to Kolkata section of the Durgapur-Haldia Natural Gas Pipeline, part of the ambitious Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga (PMUG) initiative. Built at a cost exceeding ₹1,190 crore, the pipeline will cater to districts including Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly, and Nadia, paving the way for natural gas to reach lakhs of households and businesses, while having already created jobs during its construction.
As part of the commitment to sustainability, the PM will dedicate Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD) retrofitting projects at Durgapur Steel Thermal Power Station and Raghunathpur Thermal Power Station (Damodar Valley Corporation), worth over ₹1,457 crore. These advanced pollution control systems will help ensure cleaner energy production and healthier air quality for the surrounding regions, while also creating employment through their operation and maintenance.
Rail & Road Infrastructure: Enhancing Connectivity and Logistics
To improve rail connectivity, the Prime Minister will dedicate the doubling of the Purulia–Kotshila rail line (36 km) in Purulia. This ₹390 crore project is expected to ease cargo movement between industrial hubs like Jamshedpur, Bokaro, and Dhanbad, and major urban centres such as Ranchi and Kolkata. It will reduce transit time and streamline logistics for regional industries.
Further enhancing road safety and traffic flow, the Prime Minister will also inaugurate two Road Over Bridges (ROBs) at Topsi and Pandabeshwar in Paschim Bardhaman, constructed under the Setu Bharatam Programme at a cost of over ₹380 crore. These bridges will eliminate level crossings, helping prevent accidents and easing vehicular movement.

Over 58% Dalit voters in Bihar think unemployment is biggest poll issue: survey
More than 27.4% Dalit voters in Bihar have 'no trust' in the Election Commission of India (EC), a new survey released ahead of the Assembly Elections due in the State has found. It also shows that over 58% Scheduled Caste (SC) voters in the State thought that unemployment was the biggest issue in the upcoming polls. The survey was conducted and released by the National Confederation of Dalit and Adivasi Associations (NACDAOR), a conglomerate of hundreds of associations across the nation. It covered a total of 18,581 SC voters from across the State and was conducted between June 10 and July 4, Ashok Bharti, Chairman of NACDAOR told The Hindu. He added that since the Election Commission started its Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the rolls as the survey was underway, one question was put on the survey mid-way, for which only around 8,500 responses could be gathered. Fear of losing vote To the question 'Do you fear losing your vote in the new voter list?', over 71% of respondents said yes and 23.4% said no with a little over 5% not expressing an opinion. On the general question of whether they trusted the Election Commission to be impartial, over 27% said no, about 51% said yes, and 21% said they didn't know. The survey asked a total of 11 questions such as 'who is their favourite political leader at the national and state levels', 'how is the work of the State government under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar', and 'who do they hold most responsible for the caste enumeration that will now be conducted'. It found that while over 47.5% of the respondents said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was their favourite leader at the national level, 40.3% said Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, and about 12% said other politicians. Credit for caste census It further reported that to the question 'who do they credit for the caste census?', 33.15% respondents said Narendra Modi, 30.81% said Rahul Gandhi, and 27.57% said Bihar Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav while about 8% said the names of other politicians. Further, the survey showed that about 48% said the work of the Nitish Kumar-led government was 'bad', while about 45% said it was good. Opinion: The parameters of 'success' in Bihar's poll roll revision Mr. Bharti told The Hindu, 'A lot of people do surveys of Scheduled Castes, but hardly do many of them actually speak to us on the ground. This survey is of Dalits, by Dalits.' He explained that they went through the process of training enumerators to survey SC respondents across about 49 Assembly segments in the six regions of Bihar, namely Kosi, Mithilanchal, Seemanchal, Bhojpur, Champaran, and Magadh Pataliputra regions. Mr. Bharti said, 'We have actually surveyed people on the ground. There was higher trust in our enumerators. Unfortunately for the question on SIR, we could not cover all respondents because it came midway.' The NACDAOR conducted this survey in collaboration with political consultancy firm The Convergent Media, and this is the second survey they have put out. Mr. Bharti said the first survey they did was ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections earlier this year.

NAAC introduces fully digital, simplified accreditation system for colleges, universities
NEW DELHI: To upgrade the quality of higher education in the country, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), an autonomous body under the University Grants Commission (UGC), has revamped the accreditation process and taken it online. Colleges and Universities will only receive intimation on whether they have been given accreditation or not with the seven-scale rating system that had existed the last three decades to be done away with. An official announcement is likely to be made on July 29 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a grand event to be organised by the Ministry of Education to mark the fifth anniversary of the launch of the National Education Policy 2020, said sources. Chairman of the Executive Council of NAAC, Anil Sahasrabudhe, told this newspaper, 'As on date, roughly 40% of the 1,170 universities in the country have obtained accreditation. When it comes to colleges, not even 20% of the 50,000-odd colleges have managed to get it. Our objective is to ensure that between 90%-95% of these higher educational institutions obtain the accreditation.' Accreditation is a stamp of guarantee of the quality of education offered in the institution. 'It will help the students enormously as they will gain knowledge of a good standard. Parents too will be relieved as they are assured of the quality provided in the institution after paying a hefty sum as fee,' he explained. A senior education official said that the fear of not getting a good grade in the existing system had actually put off hundreds of institutions from applying for the accreditation in the past. Higher educational institutions are presently offered the NAAC accreditation for a five-year period. The revamped process will bring it down to just three years. 'The basic process of obtaining the accreditation will be done fully online with no field visits required by the Committee. This is a major step in simplifying the process and encouraging higher educational institutions to come forward to apply to NAAC,' he said. A new system of gradation will be introduced. 'Those who get the accreditation can next opt for Maturity-Based Graded Accreditation with five levels set to be introduced, ranging between Level 1 and Level 5. Colleges and universities can keep upgrading themselves with one level after another. Level-1 and Level-2 are relatively easy to get and can be obtained online. Level-3 will be a hybrid one with online and field visits to the institute by the NAAC team,' he said. Institutions which already offer a high standard can directly apply to a higher level rather than approach the process step by step, he added. Level-4 and Level-5 will be extremely difficult to obtain and have stringent qualifying criteria. The latter will only be awarded to institutions offering education on par with international standards, Sahasrabudhe added.

J&K: Gunfight underway in Kishtwar district
Jammu: A gunfight started on Sunday between the security forces and the terrorists in J&K's Kishtwar district. Officials said that an encounter started between the security forces and the terrorists during a CASO (Cordon & Search Operation) in the Khankoo forest area of Kishtwar district. 'The encounter started during a CASO launched by the army and police in the Khankoo forest, located between Dachhan and Nagseni, following intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists in the area,' the official said. He said that as the security forces closed in on the hiding terrorists, the terrorists fired, triggering an encounter which lasted for a short duration. 'Additional reinforcements have been rushed to the area. The search operation is ongoing to track the terrorists,' officials said. Meanwhile, Nagrota headquartered White Knight corps of the army said on X, 'Based on specific inputs, an operation was launched by the Indian Army in the Hadal Gal area of Kishtwar Sector. Contact has been established with terrorists. The operation is currently in progress.' Security forces have been carrying on aggressive operations against the terrorists, their Over Ground Workers (OGWs) and their sympathisers to dismantle the entire ecosystem of terror in J&K. The aggressive pursuit of the terrorists started after the April 22 attack on civilians by Pakistan-backed Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terrorists in Baisaran meadow of Pahalgam. Twenty-six civilians, including 25 tourists and a local, were killed in that terrorist attack. The attack outraged the entire country. The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, gave a free hand to the armed forces to avenge the Pahalgam terror attack. Operation Sindoor was launched by the armed forces in which terror infrastructure was destroyed by carrying out attacks deep inside Pakistan, including Muridke near Lahore, Bahawalpur and Kotli, and Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Nine terror infrastructures were destroyed in the attack, and in a subsequent escalation, facilities of the Pakistan army were destroyed.
