Iran-Israel war opens 'new road' for Mideast: US envoy to Turkey - Region
The Iran-Israel war has opened the way to a "new road" for the Middle East in which Turkey will have a key role to play, Washington's envoy to Turkey said Sunday.
"What just happened between Israel and Iran is an opportunity for all of us to say: 'Time out. Let's create a new road' (and) Turkiye is key in that new road," Ambassador Tom Barrack told the Anadolu state news agency.
"The Middle East is ready to have a new dialogue, people are tired of the same old story," he said, saying it was essential for decades-long enmities to be reframed.
Israel, he said, was "in the process of being redefined" and its regional neighbours needed to reach agreement with it.
"(Syrian) President (Ahmed) al-Sharaa has indicated that he doesn't hate Israel and that he wants peace on that border. I think that will also happen with Lebanon. It's a necessity to have an agreement with Israel," he said.
What is happening in Syria is "in big part due to Turkey" -- a key backer of the Islamist-led rebels who toppled Bashar al-Assad and now form the Damascus government -- and Turkey could play a central role in changing the regional narrative, he said.
US President Donald Trump and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan "see that this is an opportunity at a really interesting point in both of their lives where they can change the dialogue," he said.
"And dialogue in the Middle East takes strong leadership."
Barrack also said he believed there would be a ceasefire soon in Israel's 20-month war on Gaza, which would also speed up a shift in regional thinking.
"We're going to see a ceasefire in Gaza in the near future, I think we have the right team on it," he told Anadolu.
"Everybody is starting to move back towards the Abraham Accords, especially as the Gaza situation dissipates," he said referring to the US-sponsored agreements struck by Israel to normalise ties with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco.
And he expressed confidence that Turkey and Israel -- whose relationship has been shattered by the Gaza war -- would resume their former ties.
"It can happen again, it's not a religious issue, it's a misunderstanding of territorial desires. So having a discussion, a dialogue.. will take place."

Taarek Refaat The Israeli Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure announced on Sunday a modest hike in government-regulated gasoline prices, citing mounting economic pressure following the recent 12-day conflict with Iran. However, the cumulative financial burden of military operations and heightened security costs is increasingly influencing domestic pricing structures. Traditionally, fuel prices in Israel are calculated at the end of each month based on the average oil prices in the Mediterranean market and the exchange rate between the shekel and the U.S. dollar—currently 3.38 shekels to the dollar. The final price also includes marketing fees, excise tax, and value-added tax (VAT). Inflation Pressures Mount The economic impact of the Iran-Israel conflict continues to ripple through the Israeli economy. Following the outbreak of war in Gaza earlier this year, the Israeli government raised VAT from 17% to 18%, contributing to an upward trend in consumer prices and inflation. 'The inflation crisis is not over,' said Danny Yardeni, Head of Nostro Management at Bank Leumi. 'There's pressure on rents due to the war, and not all airlines have resumed operations. But I believe the end of the crisis has reduced some of the uncertainty.' Yardeni added that the private consumption sector has weakened, with many businesses temporarily closed and households spending less amid the state of emergency. The government, for its part, has been forced to allocate significant funds for compensation, both for homeowners affected by missile strikes and for businesses disrupted during the hostilities. Egypt extends condolences to Sudan following deadly gold mine collapse - Foreign Affairs
Egypt has extended its heartfelt condolences to Sudan following a tragic gold mine collapse in eastern Sudan that resulted in dozens of fatalities, according to an official statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday. The statement added that the Egyptian government reaffirmed its full solidarity with Sudan during this difficult time, emphasising its support for the Sudanese government and people in facing the aftermath of the disaster. Egypt also expressed the most profound sympathies to the families of the victims, wishing a speedy recovery for the injured, read the statement. At least 11 people have been killed following the collapse of a gold mine in northeastern Sudan, local media reported on Sunday. According to the Sudanese media, the incident occurred on Saturday in the Howaid Desert, located in Nile River State. 2 Injured After Explosion Destroys Homes in Philadelphia
Israa Farhan A powerful explosion early Sunday morning in northern Philadelphia killed one person and injured two others, causing significant structural damage to several homes, according to US authorities. The Philadelphia Fire Department responded to an emergency call just before 5:00 AM, reporting a suspected explosion in a residential area. Fire officials confirmed that the blast severely damaged at least five houses, with some structures partially collapsing due to the force of the incident.
