From ‘mipulos' to buffalo roping: Traditional Sabahan sports set for statewide rollout
PENAMPANG, May 25 — The Sabah Youth and Sports Ministry is planning to introduce traditional sports in every district in the state, said Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Fairuz Renddan.
'Yes, there are plans by KBS (Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia) and Sabah Sports Board to introduce sports not only here in Penampang, but other districts as well.
'With the cooperation from other major bodies such as Sabah Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry, Petronas and others, our traditional sports should be held and introduced at every zone and district,' he said at the Kaamatan Festival Traditional Sports Competition at SMK Bahang here on Saturday.
Fairuz, who represented State Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ellron Angin, encouraged all Sabahan youths to participate in traditional sports.
'This is not only for our future generation to preserve our culture but also to help promote our tradition, instill community spirit and love of heritage so it will never be forgotten,' he said.
Also present at the event were Sabah Sports Board general manager Terrence Edward Pudin and Petronas Sabah and Labuan general manager Siti Ayu Haniza Abdul Wahab.
A total of 10 traditional sports will be competed at the Kaamatan Festival Traditional Sports Competition on May 24-25 at SMK Bahang, Penampang next to Hongkod Koisaan, KDCA, in conjunction with the Sabah State Level Kaamatan Festival 2025.
They are 'Mipulos' or gusti lengan (arm wrestling); 'Migazat Dukug' or tarik tali (tug of war); 'Momolositik' or melastik (slingshot); 'Monopuk' or menyumpit (blowguns); 'tumutu or memproses padi (rice processing); 'Manandus' or membujak (spear); 'Mopiri' or menyalakan api (lighting fire); 'Monungkava Kalabau' or menjerat kerbau (roping buffalo); 'Rampanau' or berjalan menggunakan galah (walk with poles); and 'Sipatu Tompulangoi' or terompak gergasi. — The Borneo Post

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : National women's doubles shuttlers Pearly Tan-M Thinaah cleared their first hurdle in the Indonesia Open and moved into the last 16 after defeating Taiwanese pair Sung Shun Yun-Yu Chien Hui in Jakarta today. The world No 4 duo were made to work by the 15th ranked pair, winning 21-16, 21-17 in a match that took 41 minutes. It was the second time that they had faced each other, with Pearly-Thinaah winning on both occasions. Pearly-Thinaah, who are looking to bag their first World Tour Super 1000 series title, won the Super 500 Thailand Open last month. In the last 16 tomorrow, they will meet Indonesian pair Lanny Tria Mayasari- Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti, who defeated Malaysia's Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing 19-21, 21-16, 21-19 in a match lasting 69 minutes. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Reunited mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei showed they are still a force to be reckoned with, beating Indian rivals Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Crasto in the opening round of the Indonesia Open this morning. The Malaysian pair, who are still ranked world No 4 despite breaking up their partnership for several tournaments, took 59 minutes to overcome the Indian pair who are ranked No 17 to win 21-11, 16-21, 21-14. During their brief separation, they played with different partners at the Malaysia Masters and the Thailand Open last month but were eliminated in the early rounds. They face up-and-coming Danish pair Mats Vestergaard-Christine Busch Andreasen in the second round tomorrow. Although the Danes are ranked No 27 in the world, their recent performance shows they will not be pushovers.
