Gourley 'pretty excited' by Glasgow 2026 mile events
Gourley is hoping the Games "is third time lucky" in terms of achieving his dream of competing at a major championships in his home city.He missed the 2019 European Indoor Athletics Championships through illness, before injury ended his hopes of competing at last year's world indoor event at the Emirates Arena."I have twice now tried to compete in a championship in Glasgow and it hasn't worked for the best," he said."It is a really big deal for me. I feel it is something in my career that I have been missing and one I need to put right."I would like the opportunity to compete in Glasgow in front of my people - my family, my friends, people that were going to be at the world indoors last year before I had to give all those tickets away."Injury hampered Gourley's dreams of glory last year, with the Scot admitting it was a tough time. Last February, he was barely able to walk because of a back injury but recovered enough to qualify for his first Olympics, finishing 10th in the 1500m final.Now he is focused on next month's European Indoor Athletics Championships in the Netherlands.The US-based Scot won his first major international medal – a 1500m silver – at the event two years ago. And, after his bid to repeat that, he will turn his attention to September's World Championships in Tokyo."I would like to win a global medal," Gourley said. "That is something I haven't done yet, so that's the overarching goal this year."The European Indoors is a building block to that. It goes hand in hand with how high the level is in Europe right now, so I would like to win a medal there. I know it is something I am capable of."

Stephen Hendry expects Ronnie O'Sullivan to have a 'hell of a season' if he continues like he plays as he has done so far this campaign. The Rocket has played just two events so far this season and is yet to lift a trophy, but he produced some stunning snooker at the Saudi Arabia Masters last week. The 49-year-old turned in one of the great performances in his 6-3 semi-final win over Chris Wakelin, making two 147s and a string of other big breaks. The final against Neil Robertson looked to be going badly wrong at 7-2 behind, but he fought back to 7-7 before losing a deciding frame to be pipped to the title 10-9 by the Australian. Hendry has loved what he has seen so far this campaign from O'Sullivan, even in his brief appearance at the Shanghai Masters which saw him beat Barry Hawkins before losing to Kyren Wilson. His form is clearly back after a disappointing last season, but Hendry feels his attitude to fight for victories appears to have returned as well. 'For the rest of the season, if he is up for it in every tournament then he is going to have one hell of a season,' the Scot said on World Snooker Tour's Snooker Club podcast. 'If he continues to play that high standard and his attitude is that he wants to be there, wants to compete and wants to dig in then it could be a really interesting season for Ronnie. 'I thought he looked really good in Shanghai although Kyren played brilliant to beat him.' On the Rocket's spell-binding performance against Wakelin, Hendry noted that O'Sullivan's cue issues of last season must be firmly behind him: 'Even for Ronnie it's the first time, he's never done it before and may never do it again. 'You cannot play snooker better than that, basically, that is as good as it gets. Two 147s, a 142, a 134, you can't play better than that. It was genius stuff. 'He obviously loves the cue, to do what he's done that's having complete confidence in the cue he's using. It's just genius.' It appears that O'Sullivan has made a good start to his two-year plan of cutting out distractions away from tournaments and focussing on rediscovering his best form when it matters. Speaking at this year's World Championship, he said: 'I said I wanted to at least do two proper years. Put everything I was doing on the back burner. I don't feel like I have that luxury anymore to do other things and try and compete. 'I think I owe it to my career to focus just on playing for the next two years, at least, and just see if I can rediscover some decent form. Try and finish my carer on a good note and not how it's felt for the last three or four years. That's my main goal. 'There will be no more exhibitions or distractions off the table.' Barry Hawkins, who practices with O'Sullivan on occasion, sees no reason to doubt that this is his plan. More Trending 'I think he's said it quite publicly that he's going to concentrate more on the snooker this year and cut down on the exhibition side of things and concentrate more on the season,' the Hawk told the Snooker Club podcast. 'He normally does so much work in China, big exhibitions, he's non-stop. So I think he's going to get his head down. He's been doing it for a long time so I'm sure he don't need the money anymore!' Next up for the Rocket is set to be the Wuhan Open, with his opening round match against Allan Taylor on Sunday. Scottie Scheffler continued his remarkable run of form by coming from nowhere to win the BMW Championship on Sunday, with the American climbing to the edge of an elite club Scottie Scheffler is on a hot streak in 2025 and added to his legacy by winning the BMW Championship. Scottie Scheffler passes £70m earnings Just three years after his first victory on the PGA Tour, Scheffler is on the brink of making more history. His win at the BMW Championship on Sunday pushed his total winnings to just under £71m, with only Woods, Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson sitting above him. Just Woods and McIlroy have crossed into the £75m club, and with Mickelson's move to LIV Golf, it's highly unlikely he'll join them. However, the same can't be said for Scheffler, who shows no signs of slowing down his impressive earnings streak. Despite not having a win in six years, Woods remains the PGA's all-time leader on the money list with a whopping £89.5m in earnings. Hot on his heels is McIlroy with a cool £79.5m, while Mickelson sits comfortably in third place with £71.5m. It's entirely possible we could see Scheffler surpass the £75m mark before this year is out. While the PGA Tour has certainly boosted some prize purses to keep pace with LIV, there's no denying Scheffler has earned his place among the golfing elite. Ian Poulter's son gets Walker Cup nod In other news, Luke Poulter, son of five-time Ryder Cup winner Ian, has been named in the Great Britain and Ireland team for this year's Walker Cup. The 50th edition of the biennial tournament will see 10 of Britain and Ireland's top amateurs go head-to-head with their American counterparts at Cypress Point and gets underway on the weekend of September 6. Poulter Jr, who studies at the University of Florida, narrowly missed out on qualifying for this year's US Open, losing in a sudden-death play-off to Austen Truslow. Scheffler dismisses Tiger Woods comparison It's not the first time Scheffler's achievements have sparked talk of him being mentioned alongside Tiger. Yet this weekend's comeback win in Maryland has once more got people wondering whether he could match Woods' legendary status. But Scottie isn't keen on such lofty praise himself. The Texan admitted as much following another prestigious victory at the BMW Championship. "I always say the comparisons between me and Tiger are fairly silly," he told the Golf Channel when asked if he's growing more comfortable with being likened to golfing royalty. "What is it, 18 wins now? Not even 25% of the way there. "I think Tiger completely transcended the game of golf. He's completely different from the rest of us. What I'm trying to do is just get the most out of myself. That's for you guys to make comparisons if you want to. "For me, I'm just trying to get the most out of my game. I love practising. I love working hard. I love doing the stuff it takes to come out here and play well, [and] I look forward to continuing that." It's not just the usual pundits singing Scheffler's praises, though. Charley Hull freak injury outcome LPGA sensation Hull won't be returning to action anytime soon after revealing the extent of her recent bizarre injury. The English golf ace, who was previously likened to Woods, was forced to pull out of the PIF London Championship following a tumble over a kerb in the car park. That hasn't prevented her from hitting the gym again, complete with an unwieldy-looking moon boot. Hull, 29, continues to stay engaged on social media as she gave followers a glimpse into her daily routine. "The security guard was watching me and I heard my ankle pop. I thought I broke it. Morecambe appoint youngest boss in top five leagues after dramatic rescue and manager axe
Morecambe were finally taken over by Panjab Warriors on Sunday evening and the club's new owners have already decided to press ahead with making a managerial change Morecambe have new owners and a new manager in Ashvir Singh Johal following an eventful 48-hour period which saw Panjab Warriors rescue the club from extinction before opting to part company with their previous boss, Derek Adams. The Shrimps, who were relegated out of the EFL last season, have faced months of uncertainty over their long-term future and were suspended from the National League last month due to concerns over the club's ability to meet their financial obligations under their previous owner, Jason Whittingham. Panjab Warriors have been trying to finalise a takeover of the club for months after receiving approval from the EFL back in June. It was not until Sunday evening, though, that Morecambe fans finally had confirmation that a deal had been concluded and signed off. The following day, Morecambe's new owners made their first significant move since taking ownership of the club by taking the decision to sack Adams. And, on Tuesday morning, they followed that up by swiftly unveiling Johal as the Scot's successor. At 30 years of age, Joval is the youngest manager in the top five divisions of the English football pyramid. He also becomes the first Sikh to take charge of a professional British football club. Joval has never managed at senior level but does boast an impressive CV: he became one of the youngest coaches in the history of English football to gain his Uefa Pro Licence earlier this summer and has also worked under Cesc Fabregas as an assistant youth coach at Como. Joval also has EFL experience after featuring in Kolo Toure's coaching staff during a brief period at Wigan Athletic. The decision to part company with Adams, 50, on Monday has widely been condemned among the Morecambe fanbase online. Although it is not uncommon for such decisions to be made following takeovers, Adams has been commended for the manner in which he has held court during a turbulent period for the club. He has managed the Shrimps on two previous occasions, the first of which culminated in him leading the club to the third tier of English football for the first time in their history. The club thanked Adams for his "leadership and steadiness" during a "testing chapter" in a statement. The club's new owners added: "His return instilled direction and purpose, helping guide Morecambe into League One for the first time in their history and stabilised the team under immense pressure. "As the club enters a new era, a strategic transition in leadership has been made with respect and appreciation for Derek's services."
