Time of Indiaa day ago
Agartala: In compliance with MHA directive to deal with illegal immigrants, West Tripura district police on Friday constituted a 15-member special task force (STF) to detect, identify and deport illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar, reports Biswendu Bhattacharjee.
Tripura shares an 856km-long international border with Bangladesh, making it a sensitive zone for cross-border movement. According to an order issued by Kiran Kumar, SP, West Tripura district, the STF will include officers-in-charge of all 15 police stations in the district. The team will be led by deputy SP Debasish Saha. The order states that the STF has been tasked with the identification and deportation of illegal Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas residing in or detained within the district.

‘Bangladesh needs her…': Bangladeshi nationals call for return of Sheikh Hasina

Bangladesh is currently facing deep political unrest, with many expressing deep concerns over ongoing violence and hardship, especially for minorities of the country. Bangladeshi nationals arriving at the Indo-Bangladesh border in Jalpaiguri district are urging for peace and political stability, with some explicitly calling for the return of former Prime Minister Sheik Hasina, ANI reported. Several individuals have highlighted the deteriorating conditions in Bangladesh. Premananda Roy, a resident of Panchagarh district in Bangladesh, stated, 'The situation in Bangladesh is not good. Every day we are receiving reports of violence from different parts of the country. We stand firmly in favour of peace. But peace is yet to return.' 'Despite everything, a large section of the people still demand the return of Sheikh Hasina. Bangladesh needs her leadership now more than ever,' he added. Echoing similar views, Sapna Rani Saha, who came from the Nilphamari district to India for medical treatment, said, "There are reports of violence in several parts of Bangladesh. But fortunately, our area remains largely peaceful. Peace is crucial for both our nations. Earlier, we never faced such issues. But now I am experiencing many difficulties at the International Check Post (ICP). Despite being from a doctor's family, we often had to visit India for better medical treatment.' Speaking of the former Prime Minister, she added, 'We still want to support Sheikh Hasina, but it's true she has made some mistakes and now she is paying for that." While many expressed an alarming situation over the growing unrest, others downplayed the situation. "I have come here from Bangladesh. The situation in Bangladesh is not that bad. In my country, there are few issues ongoing regarding politics. It has been going on since the year 1971 and is still going on. I guess this will continue.' KK Sharma, a resident of Thakurgaon district. 'Our interim government is also running the country well," he added. Despite the differing views, reports from areas such as Gopalganj of Bangladesh indicate several deaths amid rising tensions, particularly targeting the minority communities. At least four people were killed and dozens injured in violent clashes between law enforcement personnel and Awami League (AL) supporters in Gopalganj on Wednesday. The violence erupted in the wake of a pre-scheduled National Citizen Party (NCP) rally at Poura Park in Gopalganj town, which was opposed by AL supporters despite a recent government ban on all political activities of the Awami League. In response to the violence, the Interim Government of Bangladesh has established a committee to investigate the acts of violence and deaths that occurred in Gopalganj on July 16, ANI reported. The dedicated committee will be chaired by Nasimul Ghani, who currently serves as the Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, and includes two additional secretaries, one from the Ministry of Public Administration and another from the Ministry of Law and Justice. This committee has been mandated to conduct a thorough inquiry and submit its findings within two weeks to the Chief Adviser's Office, the news agency said. "The Interim Government reiterates its commitment to upholding justice, maintaining public order, and ensuring that those responsible for any unlawful acts, violence and deaths are held accountable in accordance with the law", ANI reported, citing official statement.

'Neha', Living In India For 10 Years, Turns Out To Be Bangladeshi Man Abdul

Bhopal: In a startling revelation that could potentially expose an organised racket of illegal immigration and identity fraud, Bhopal Police has detained a Bangladeshi national, Abdul Kalam, who had been living in the city for the past eight years under the false identity of Neha, a transgender. Kalam, who entered India at the age of 10 and spent two decades in Mumbai before settling in Bhopal's Budhwara area, allegedly assumed a transgender identity and became an active member of the local hijra community. He acquired crucial documents-including an Aadhaar card, ration card, and even a passport-using forged documents with the help of local agents. Police investigations reveal that Abdul not only lived under a fake identity but also travelled abroad using a forged Indian passport. He shifted homes multiple times within the Budhwara locality and was known to all simply as "Neha." His gender is now being medically verified to determine whether he is biologically transgender or used this identity as a cover to evade detection. Sources in the police said Kalam was also involved in transgender activities in Maharashtra, which raises questions about whether his disguise was part of a larger network. Authorities are probing whether other members of the transgender community were complicit or unknowingly aided in the fraud. Two local youths who allegedly helped Abdul procure fake identity documents are currently being questioned. Investigators suspect this might just be the tip of the iceberg, with a broader network facilitating illegal immigration and document forgery. Call recordings and chats from Abdul's mobile phone are being scrutinised for leads. Abdul has been detained for 30 days under the Foreigners Act. Additional DCP Shalini Dixit said "He has been living in Bhopal for the last 8-10 years. Before that, he was in Maharashtra. We received a tip-off through an informer and initiated the identification process. He has also travelled to Bangladesh in the meantime, and we are awaiting reports from concerned departments," she said. Authorities have initiated the process for deportation, but not before thoroughly investigating the scope of the racket and Abdul Kalam's past activities, movements, and connections-both in India and abroad. The case has sent shockwaves through law enforcement agencies, not just because of the identity fraud, but also due to potential national security implications, with questions being raised about how a foreign national managed to live undetected for years in a major Indian city using forged documents. The Bhopal Police, along with central agencies, are now racing against time to uncover the full extent of the fraud-and whether this was an isolated incident or part of a deeper, more troubling network.

The Tripura government's actions followed the Union Ministry of Home Affairs circular , directing all states and Union Territories across the country to verify the credentials of persons suspected to be illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar. If the documents of the foreign citizens are found to be fake or illegally procured, they would face deportation, the MHA circular had said. The ruling BJP ally Tipra Motha Party (TMP) has been organising different types of agitation for the past two months, demanding the push-back of "illegal migrants" from Bangladesh and Myanmar. The tribal past party has demanded strict implementation of the orders from the MHA concerning the identification, detention, and deportation of illegal migrants. TMP senior leader and party's legislator Ranjit Debbarma noted that the BJP-ruled states like Assam and Gujarat had taken firm steps against infiltrators, but the Tripura government had not taken adequate steps in this regard. The party's senior leader and Forest and Environment Minister Animesh Debbama had said that no infiltrators would be allowed to stay in Tripura. Debbama said that a nine-member delegation of the party led by Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma would meet the Election Commission of India next week to raise several key issues related to the electoral roll preparation in Tripura. He said, "A major demand would be for a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll in Tripura, similar to the process recently carried out in Bihar to identify the fake voters and infiltrators.'
