Three Florida football linemen earn spots on prestigious 2025 award watch lists
On Tuesday, the Gators placed a pair of offensive linemen–center Jake Slaughter and tackle Austin Barber–on the 2025 Outland Trophy watch list, an award honoring the top interior lineman in college football.
Slaughter started all 13 games at center last season for the Orange and Blue and led Florida's offensive line in offensive snaps with 800. He led the Gators in Pro Football Focus' offense, pass-block and run-block grades.
Pro Football Focus also regarded Slaughter as the SEC's top offensive player heading into the 2025 season.
Barber, a left tackle, also started all 13 games last season for the Gators. He logged a total of 729 offensive snaps with a run block grade of 70.0 according to Pro Football Focus. He was named SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week during Week 4 after scoring his first career touchdown in the fourth quarter against Mississippi State.
Defensive tackle Caleb Banks picked up his own preseason nod, landing on the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list.
The Nagurski is awarded annually to the nation's best defensive player, regardless of position, and has been one of the highest marks of individual defensive excellence in the sport.
Last season, Banks logged 21 tackles (10 solo) that included seven tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and a recovered fumble in 10 starts. He also set a career-high in snaps played (56) against Tennessee.
The Outland field will be narrowed to six or seven semifinalists on Nov. 19, with three finalists named on Nov. 25. The winner will be revealed during the Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 12.
For the Nagurski, four finalists will be announced in mid-to-late November before the trophy is presented on Dec. 8. Both honors fall under the umbrella of the National College Football Awards Association and stand as benchmarks of elite play in the sport.

Teddy Bridgewater Makes Career Pivot/Return By Signing With Tampa Bay
A year after inking their franchise quarterback to a three-year deal, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers rekindled its relationship with a long-time NFL journeyman to potentially secure the team's 2025 backup signal caller. Yesterday, veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater officially re-entered the NFL by signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following a team meeting with ownership and the passing of his physical. The former Louisville Cardinal was last seen on an NFL roster in January 2025 as a member of the Detroit Lions. The addition of Bridgewater gives Tampa Bay insurance and stability for a quarterback room that is dealing with injuries to Mayfield and rookie late-round selection Michael Pratt. Pratt is managing a back injury while Mayfield recently returned to practice following a right hand contusion. Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht also revealed to the public that five years ago Bridgewater was the team's second free agency option at starting quarterback behind eventual signee Tom Brady. 'A few years ago he was behind 'Door No. 2,' Licht said. "We talked about that today on the sidelines. So we ended up with Tom Brady, but we now have Teddy on the roster, so you can't have everything at once. You can have everything, just not all at once. Licht envisions the Buccaneers potentially carrying up to three quarterbacks on the opening day roster in 2025. Currently, the team has Mayfield as its starter with rookies Michael Pratt, Connor Bazelak and former 2021 second-round selection Kyle Trask competing for the backup quarterback role. 'We still have preseason games to play and all that, but right now Kyle is our backup,' Licht said. That's the intention and that's what we're hoping for, but yeah everybody's competing." On the NFL gridiron, Bridgewater has played for six NFL teams from 2014 to 2024 accumulating 15,120 yards passing, 75 touchdown tosses and a 33-32 record as a former first-round selection. Specifically pertaining to the Buccaneers, Bridgewater has ties with many important figures on the current roster and coaching staff. Tampa's defensive line coach Charlie Strong was once Bridgewater's head coach at Louisville. The NFL veteran was also co-workers with offensive coordinator Josh Gizzard in 2022 when Gizzard was Miami's quality control coach. Lastly, Bridgewater was high school teammates with long-time Buccaneers defensive standout and captain Lavonte David. "I think he would bring great professional leadership, add to the football team and a guy who knows what it takes," David told ESPN on Tuesday of the signing. "Been through a lot of adversity and knows what it takes to win. ... A great guy who's willing to sacrifice for the team, and he's definitely somebody who you want to call a friend outside of football." Bridgewater's return to the NFL all but solidifies his coaching tenure with his high school alma mater Miami Northwestern is over for at least this season. Last month, he was suspended by the school for providing impermissible benefits to his football players which included money from his own pocket to cover for team trips, meals and uber rides. In a team press conference today with the media, Bridgewater acknowledged that his actions were an all-out effort to protect the kids he coached from the community they navigated through each and everyday. "I'm protective, and I'm a father first before anything. And when I decided to coach, those players became my sons," Bridgewater said. "And I wanted to make sure that I just protected them in the best way that I can. I think that's what came about. Miami Northwestern's in a tough neighborhood, and sometimes things can happen when the kids are walking home and different things like that. So I was just trying to protect them and give them a ride home instead of having to take those dangerous walks." Last season as the team's headman, Bridgewater led Miami Northwestern to its first state championship in school history with a dominant victory over Raines High school 41-0 in the Class 3A Florida High School Athletic Association State Title Game.

Dolphins backup OL Andrew Meyer out "weeks" with an injury
The Dolphins have lost backup interior offensive lineman Andrew Meyer for "weeks" with an injury, coach Mike McDaniel said Wednesday. 'He's had a great camp, really stepped his game, and I'm very impressed with his play,' McDaniel said, via Dante Collinelli of 'He will be out weeks, but he's built a strong foundation as one of the top performers if you want to talk about growth of game. One of the top guys from year one to year two that has made tremendous strides.' Meyer practiced with the first team at center until Aaron Brewer returned from a soft-tissue injury in his right leg. Meyer's injury is undisclosed. He made the team as an undrafted rookie last year but he did not see any action. The Dolphins also are missing offensive linemen Austin Jackson and Liam Eichenberg. They have signed Daniel Brunskill and Germaine Ifedi in camp.

South Carolina team stuns defending champions Florida with wild walk-off to earn trip to Little League World Series
A team from South Carolina is headed to Williamsport for the first time, thanks to a wild walk-off win over the defending Little League World Series champions. A group from Irmo, South Carolina, knocked off the group from Lake Mary, Florida, on Wednesday in stunning fashion. Florida took a 4-0 lead into the final inning, but pitcher Jacob Brown opened with a pair of walks and then hit his pitch limit after securing one out. His relief pitcher gave up a single before two more walks, one of which was intentional, to bring up Brady Westbrooks. Westbrooks then hit a three-RBI double with a deep line drive to the left-field wall with two outs to steal the 5-4 win, which sparked a massive celebration on the field. Florida was a perfect 3-0 up until Wednesday in their regional site, and had outscored opponents 26-1. They rolled over South Carolina 14-0 when they played on Sunday, too. Florida beat Chinese Taipei 2-1 in extra innings to win the Little League World Series last year. The tournament hasn't seen a back-to-back champion since Tokyo pulled it off in 2012 and 2013. The Little League World Series will open on August 13. The U.S. and International Championship games are scheduled for August 23, and the World Series Championship will take place on August 24. The Seattle Mariners and New York Mets will participate in the Little League Classic at Bowman Field in Williamsport this year, too.
