Portman hoping to make Rum point at the Curragh
With Portman keen to stick to five furlongs and not enamoured by taking him to Goodwood, he felt there was little to lose by adding him to the Group Two for €12,000.
'It wasn't that difficult a decision in the end,' said Portman.
'We felt we'd been banging our head against the wall a bit in good company so we'd made a conscious decision not to spend Mr Ward's (owner) money on entries – but then he goes and runs such a good race like he did at Sandown to give us a bit more faith.
'Whether it is the right thing is another matter entirely. Otherwise there's just nowhere else to run him, as we're very keen to keep him at five furlongs.
'He displayed a good turn of foot at Newmarket and again at Sandown. He didn't disgrace himself at Haydock or Ascot, either.
'He's come out of Sandown very well, I know it's only a few weeks, but it's all about what other options there were and they were very limited. Only the result itself will tell us if we're being wise or not.'
There was 20 millimetres of overnight rain at the Curragh which will have been very welcome no doubt and that should not worry Rumstar.
'He won at Ascot on soft last October, but it wasn't as soft as people say it was. He got away with it there. He'd be fine unless it got silly soft,' said Portman.

Danny Ward happy to be back in Wrexham's starting XI
A product of the academy at The Racecourse, Ward rejoined the Reds last month after leaving Leicester City. After coming on for the second half in the 3-0 win against Melbourne Victory during the first game of the pre-season tour Down Under, the Wales international was back between the posts from the start on Tuesday as Wrexham suffered a 2-1 defeat to Sydney FC. Before he made the switch Liverpool in January 2012, Ward made one competitive appearance in the Welsh Cup against Airbus in December 2011 and the 32-year-old was delighted to be back in the starting XI in front of more than 40,000 fans at The Allianz Stadium. He told the club's YouTube channel: 'It's a lot different surroundings to where I would have been a long time ago. 'It was a really good feeling. It feels like it's been a long time coming, and it's very surreal. "The club I left a long time ago has completely changed now. 'Coming to an arena like this, the other side of the world and drawing a crowd of over 40,000, being a part of that… I think it was a brilliant occasion and I'm really proud about it." Wrexham took an 18th minute with an own goal from a James McClean free kick and after Ollie Rathbone limped off, there was a further blow for the Reds on the stroke of half-time when Sydney levelled. "A lot of the boys got 60 minutes under their belt which is the main part of pre-season," said Ward. "It is to get ourselves up to that level of fitness where we can start to compete. "Apart from Ollie getting a knock, coming through that is another step in the development to get to that match fitness. "It is difficult for boys to come on then for the last 30 minutes with lots of changes. "Credit to Sydney as well, they put in a real shift. Showed some flashes of some real nice stuff and pressured really well. "All-in-all, a good workout and something which will hold us in good stead going into Wellington." Aidan O'Brien's daughter wins as owner at track where she suffered career-ending injury
Ana O'Brien, who suffered multiple serious injuries in a fall at Killarney in 2017, returned to the same course to see her own horse A Boy Named Susie making a winning debut The daughter of Aidan O'Brien celebrated her first success as a racehorse owner at the track where her promising riding career ended. Ana O'Brien, 29, followed brothers Joseph and Donnacha into careers as jockeys and partnered her first winner for her father as a 16-year-old in 2013. She was leading the Irish apprentice title in 2017, having already ridden 18 winners, when she was seriously injured in a fall at Killarney in July 2017 in which her mount Druids Cross was fatally injured. She was airlifted to hospital having fractured the C1 vertebra in her neck, T6 in her back and damaged her eye socket, jaw and teeth. She has not ridden in a race since. Ana has continued to be involved in the O'Brien family's racing operations, having her own runners trained by Joseph and Donnacha, but she had not been successful until Wednesday at the same Killarney meeting where she last rode. A Boy Named Susie, a son of Starspangledbanner trained by Donnacha, was a 100-30 chance on debut in a 1m maiden for two-year-olds. The race has an illustrious record of producing future Group 1 winners with this year's Derby victor Lambourn having landed the race last year and Luxembourg and Iridessa also on the roll of honour. A Boy Named Susie won in the style of an exciting colt when he scored by three lengths and could be on a path to the Group 1 National Stakes. Donnacha said: 'We thought he was good as he did a really, really good piece of work up the Curragh a few weeks ago. 'This auction race looked a tough ask as he was giving away weight to winners and it is a tough track first time out, but he is obviously just smart. 'For an auction race at Killarney, it has thrown up Iridessa, Luxembourg and last year Lambourn and a few Group Two winners as well, so it's a nice start for him. They hacked and then sprinted, but I think he could be a proper one. He has plenty of gears for a big horse.' He added: 'It is a better experience for Ana than the last time she was here and that's her first winner as an owner as well.' Ana said: 'I've been waiting a little while so it was nice to get one. It was my first runner for Donnacha and first winner. "In fairness Donnacha always liked this horse and I'm delighted he came out and did that. It's my first time back here since my fall, so thankfully this is a much better day.'
