Coles facing backlash over conflicting plastic messages

Coles has come under scrutiny after a shopper posted photos online showing two conflicting in-store signs about plastic use positioned back-to-back in the fruit and vegetable section.
One message encourages customers to forgo plastic bags — 'Do you really need a bag? Place your loose fruit & veg directly into the basket'.
The other promotes individually plastic wrapped cucumbers — 'We wrap cucumbers to stay fresh longer'.
7NEWS.com.au headed to a local Coles, capturing the same signage.
Critics joined the debate, calling out the supermarket's mixed messaging.
'They use plastic with pretty much every product, yet put the blame on us for using a plastic bag at checkout and to bag our fruit and veg. It's all crap. Plastic is the customer's fault? Look around, Coles, WE aren't the problem,' one Reddit user commented.
'Yes, we need bags. It's never been about the environment it's about control and money. If Coles and Woolworths regularly had their trolleys and baskets pressure cleaned... you wouldn't need bags,' said another.
When 7NEWS.com.au asked Coles about the criticism, a spokesperson said Coles is 'committed to reducing unnecessary plastic and making our packaging easier to recycle'.
'We encourage our customers to purchase loose fruit and vegetables as just a way to help reduce the use of single-use plastic bags.
'Customers can now purchase grapes in bags that are recyclable in household recycling bins rather than single-use plastic. Last year we trialled fibre-based blueberry packaging in recyclable cardboard punnets and also introduced Coles' Unique Selection mandarins in a recyclable bag.'
The sign also mentioned fighting food waste.
However, experts say plastic wrappers usually offer little value to the product.
'I always ask, if a plastic package can extend the shelf life of a 'fresh' food item for days or weeks, then what is the nutritional value of that product?' environmental scientist Paul Harvey told 7NEWS.com.au.
'The reality is, there is copious volumes of food waste each day, and this happens regardless of the item being wrapped in plastic.
'Often when the item has been on the shelf too long the item will get thrown into the garbage still wrapped in plastic, heading straight for one of those near-capacity landfills.'
Companies like Coles and Woolworths have publicly committed to reducing plastic in their supply chains.
'We offer a range of reusable options such as tote, chiller and mesh fresh produce bags,' the Coles spokesperson said.
A lot of the efforts made are often cosmetic, however.
'Supermarkets run a 'plastic free' campaign while at the same time have a giveaway that includes useless plastic figurines,' Harvey said.
'If the supermarkets used their market power to put pressure on manufacturers to reduce or remove plastic from packaging then we would begin to see a drastic decline in plastic and other waste management challenges.'
Their promotion of sustainability is also often undercut by their ongoing dependence on plastic packaging, and the public's need for items, particularly produce, to look aesthetic and 'attractive', she continued.
'Most of the plastic packaging that is used in the fresh food departments has little to do with product quality control, and more to do with saleability of the product... or stock inventory control,' Harvey said.
'The products that big retailers sell are one of the largest contributors to the plastic pollution crisis.'
With Australia using about 70 billion pieces of soft plastics like food wrappers every year amid mixed messaging like the Coles signs, shoppers are increasingly questioning whether supermarkets sustainability is backed by real change or simply wrapped in more plastic.
'Often the packages contain baseless claims about containing 'near ocean', 'ocean bound' or 'compostable' materials,' Harvey said.
'It is very difficult for consumers to actually know what is good and what is greenwashing.'
The issue plays in to a far larger concern around climate change.
'We are at a point now where the plastic pollution crisis is no longer an issue that only impacts the rest of the world. Australia is drowning in plastic and other waste, and currently there is no realistic or plausible solution for how to manage the problem,' Harvey said.
'It is time that supermarkets were required by their regulators to act on waste reduction in a meaningful way.'

However, Queensland observes the monarch's birthday on the first Monday of October. Western Australia usually celebrates at the end of September. It marks WA Day in June. Unlike Christmas Day and Good Friday, most shops are open on the King's Birthday public holiday but may operate on different hours. While schools and universities will be closed, pubs, cafes and restaurants are allowed to stay open on the public holiday. However, some smaller venues may choose to close. Public transport is also expected to be running as usual however may operate on a different timetable. It's recommended to check your state or territories' public transport website to check for any changes. Woolworths stores in South Australia will be closed. Keep the Sheep campaigned 'mothballed‘ for now but organisers say it is not the end

The Australian live export industry's Keep the Sheep campaign has been 'mothballed' for the time being, with contractors laid off and leftover funds set to be used to keep the group's website running. But Keep the Sheep leaders say it is not the end of the impassioned campaign that urged voters to 'put Labor last' ahead of the May Federal election and hoped to have the Albanese Government's plan to ban live sheep exports overturned. In a statement issued to farmers and stakeholders on June 4, the group's company secretary Mark Harvey-Sutton — who is also the chief executive of the Australian Livestock Exporters Association — opened up about the group's soul-searching after Labor's election win. He said the group had 'taken a hiatus' after the Federal election but wanted to 'be transparent' with its volunteers about the future of the organisation so many had poured their time and energy into supporting. 'To minimise our costs, we rolled off the contractors who were working on Keep the Sheep following the election,' he said. 'This is to ensure that our ongoing donor income is directed to maintaining the website and helping us stay compliant with our obligations under the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918.' Mr Harvey-Sutton said Keep the Sheep — which was funded by industry donations — did not have 'much left in the tank' in terms of cash flow and savings. 'We spent nearly all the money we raised on campaigning and pushing our message into key seats,' he said. 'What remains will be used to cover our debts and preserve our resources to ensure the company remains solvent and our key asset of the website is maintained. 'This essentially means we are mothballing Keep the Sheep for now. 'We realise this may be disappointing. But it is not the end.' While the campaign mobilised hundreds of volunteers and united WA's sheep farming industry, it failed to have the desired impact when Anthony Albanese' Labor Government stormed to a second term of power in May. Labor's plan to end live sheep exports from Australia by May 2028 now looks set to become a reality, despite the industry arguing it has modernised in recent years to have the best animal welfare standards in the world. Despite this, Mr Harvey-Sutton said he was proud of what Keep the Sheep had achieved — saying it had 'set the tone for agriculture advocacy into the future' in terms of bringing regional issues to the forefront. 'We originally started Keep the Sheep as a pressure movement to try to prevent the legislation for the ban passing the Parliament,' Mr Harvey-Sutton said. 'When we were unsuccessful, we pivoted to applying political pressure to attempt to reverse the ban, or reverse the government. 'The collective efforts of every one of our volunteers built a movement, gave agriculture a voice, and meant that our issue could not be ignored. 'We know there are challenges on the horizon that will require what we have built, to create an understanding for regional communities and bring their issues to the forefront, in both regional and metro areas.' Mr Harvey-Sutton said the organisation needed 'time and support' to develop and create something that 'honoured' the work of its volunteers and campaign managers, but exactly what that looked like was still being determined. 'We ask for your patience as we work through this process, so that we can create a powerful voice for rural communities that will echo around the country,' he said. Labor took its pledge to end live sheep exports to the last two elections, with legislation to ban live sheep exports by sea passing Federal Parliament on July 1, 2024. WA farmers are set to be hardest hit by the end of the trade, with 500,000 sheep exported from Australia last year, mainly to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Nearly all the export ships set sail from WA to markets mostly in the Middle East. Australia also ships about 750,000 head of cattle a year, with some of the cattle loaded on live sheep export ships.
