BBC boss breaks silence on MasterChef's future after Gregg Wallace saga & John Torode asked to QUIT over ‘racist remark'
The investigation, which upheld 45 of 83 allegations against Wallace, 60, dropped yesterday.

The dossier also upheld a complaint that an unnamed person used a racial phrase once several years ago.
Torode confirmed to The Sun last night it referred to him, but said: 'I have absolutely no recollection of this, and I do not believe that it happened.'
Speaking about whether MasterChef has a future, in light of the saga, Tim Davie said today: "I absolutely think it does, I think a great programme that's loved by audiences is much bigger than individuals.
"It absolutely can survive and prosper, but we've got to make sure we're in the right place in terms of the culture of the show."
The BBC Director General was also asked about whether Torode would remain on the show.
"There has to be follow-up, so the BBC, in some ways, we're quite simple on this, if someone is found to not live up to the values we expect, the independent company, Banijay, in this case, to take action and report back to us on what they have done," he said.
"These aren't BBC employees, but we absolutely expect action to be taken, that's the first thing I'd say."
His statement comes in light of the BBC Annual Report published today.
The scandal-hit BBC boss has been given a sizeable pay rise to earn £544,999 a year.
The broadcaster's annual report revealed the Director-General's pay packet swelled by around £15,000 or 2.5% over the past 12 months - despite controversies including those involving Wallace, Bob Vylan and a Hamas documentary.
Masterchef meltdown as BBC asked John Torode to RESIGN over 'racist remark' before Gregg Wallace sacking
The Beeb is required to publish the pay and expenses for all senior leaders earning over £178,000 annually "in the BBC's public services", according to its report.
Davie - who took up his current role in 2020 - was paid an estimated £529,999 in salary and taxable benefits in 2023-24.
He insisted today: "I simply think I'm in a place where I can work to improve dramatically the BBC and lead it in the right way."
Key points in the BBC Annual Report
Gary Lineker has topped the list of highest earners for another year
He was followed by Zoe Ball, who remains second best-paid at the Beeb despite her dramatic pay cut
More than two thirds of the broadcaster's top 20 earners received pay rises
BBC Breakfast star Naga Munchetty received a boost to her pay, but co-host Charlie Stayt's salary stayed the same
Disgraced presenter Huw Edwards did not feature on the list after his exit from the broadcaster
Meanwhile the number of people paying for a TV licence fell by around 300,000 last year - almost two per cent in all
He added: "We will make mistakes, but I think as a leadership and myself, I've been very clear, and I think we have been decisive.
"There's enormous, massive noise and different opinions about what we should do, but I think we have been clear.
"We are making the right decisions. We're being transparent on what we do, and I think that's what counts.
"I would also say that under my tenure I've set a very clear stall out in terms of impartiality."
Asked by The Sun why Davie had received a £15,000 bonus despite significant failures throughout the year, BBC's chair of the board Dr Samir Shah said: "His pay has been frozen since 2021 and I think that it is reasonable.
"There is little doubt that Tim's pay is significantly under [the going rate].
"If you look at the figures, trust levels have gone up - if you look at the report, the actual performance of the BBC has been exceptional."
He added: "I have no problems with awarding him with what is a very small bonus - which still ends up [with] his salary being significantly lower than any of his peers in the sector."
It comes as departing Match of the Day host Gary Lineker ended his time with the Corporation by topping its pay league for the eighth consecutive year, raking in £1.35million.
He ranked the top highest earner, closely followed by presenter Zoe Ball who takes home an eye-watering £515,000 a year.
Alan Shearer, Greg James and Fiona Bruce were all in the top three earners.
SCANDAL-HIT BBC
The Annual Report and Tim Davie's pay rise comes after a tough year for the Beeb.
It also featured a column by Dr Shah in which he referenced the "profoundly shocking revelations" involving disgraced News At Ten anchor Huw Edwards.
Just yesterday bombshell inquiry, carried out by law firm Lewis Silkin for production company Banijay, unveiled a litany of complaints against Gregg Wallace.
The report found out of the 83 allegations against Wallace, 45 were substantiated.
Most of them involved inappropriate sexual language and humour.
But, the investigation also looked at 10 complaints made about other people, from the period between 2012 to 2018/2019.
Two were substantiated, relating to inappropriate language, one for swearing and the other for racist language.
'Lewis Silkin's findings include two further allegations which were upheld, relating to other individuals," stated the report.
"The BBC takes these findings very seriously and we have asked Banijay UK to take action to address these issues, which is underway.
"This will be completed as a priority."
Of the substantiated claims regarding Wallace, some related to other inappropriate language, being in a state of undress, and one case of unwanted physical contact.
The report concluded 94 per cent of the allegations against Wallace related to behaviour which is said to have occurred between 2005 and 2018.
There was one substantiated allegation after 2018.
Meanwhile, Wallace's long-term MasterChef co-host John Torode last night confirmed he was accused of racism in the report.
The BBC also told the presenter to pretend he had mental health issues after accusing him of racism, it was claimed.
And, shockingly, sources said the BBC and production company Banijay asked John to resign from the beleaguered show last week and claim he had mental health problems — to which he refused.
The findings of a separate inquiry into the BBC documentary Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone, were revealed.
Ofcom has since confirmed it will be launching its own probe into the production.
Earlier the BBC admitted to breaching their own editorial guidelines by failing to disclose the narrator was the son of a Hamas official.
And, just last week BBC bosses were told to "get a grip quicker" after the live stream of punk rap duo Bob Vylan's Glastonbury set was left on air despite controversial comments which some interpreted as antisemitic.
Ofcom boss Dame Melanie Dawes insisted there is a risk the public lose faith in the corporation if coverage isn't pulled swiftly and investigations are lengthy.
The broadcaster had apologised after the band's lead singer chanted 'death, death' to Israeli defence forces during their festival set last month.

Inside Gino D'Acampo's ‘mastermind plan' to be uncancelled as axed ITV star goes on ‘apology tour' after allegations
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) FIVE months after being sacked by ITV over his 'inappropriate and intimidating' behaviour, celebrity chef Gino G'Acampo has embarked on an 'apology tour' in a desperate bid to be 'uncancelled'. As The Sun revealed last week that Gino, 48, is planning to embark on some new business ventures in Australia, insiders tell us he is also masterminding a secret plan to save his career in the UK. Sign up for the Entertainment newsletter Sign up 7 Celebrity chef Gino D'Acampo is planning to launch a comeback Credit: Rex 7 Gino was known for his cheeky antics on This Morning Credit: Enterprise Those in the know tell us that the Italian TV chef has hatched a strategy to use his social media platforms, a place where he feels he can control his image and narrative, to win back the public. 'The power of persuasion' A source familiar with the situation explains: "TV bosses can refuse to put him on air but no one can stop him from having a voice on social media. "He can use that platform to stay connected with those who have stuck by him, reform his image for those who have turned their back on him and, he hopes, win over a new fanbase." But already it looks like Gino's endeavours on his social channels are landing badly. Just this month, Gino made a painfully transparent attempt to challenge claims he created an uncomfortable working environment. Posting footage of him hugging, kissing and holding hands with some of his restaurant staff during a recent visit to his Italian chain in Newcastle, Gino said: 'Another fantastic day with my team. 'I've always said… A happy kitchen creates fantastic food.' He chose Mark Ambor's song 'Belong Together' to play over the video. Our source continues: "The happy cheery corporate videos on Instagram are always part and parcel of any apology tour. Gino wants to maintain a united front and thinks the power of persuasion goes a long way. "Gino hopes people will see it and think 'he's such a nice, down to earth guy, not too high and mighty to work in his own restaurant and look at everyone getting on with him, having laughs and banter'." Gino D'Acampo slammed for 'highly inappropriate' cooking video as fans say 'that's disturbing and upsetting' However, amid his increase in social media content, Gino came under fire for posting a 'highly inappropriate' video involving two live quails that was described as 'disturbing and upsetting'. The unapologetic chef was seen kissing the two birds in one shot before dangling their corpses in another - choosing Bob Marley's hit Three Little Birds as the accompanying music. It comes after more than 40 people described "unacceptable", "distressing" and "horrendous" experiences while working with Gino over a 12-year period. Despite ITV yanking his shows off air, including a brand new series of Family Fortunes, the TV chef - who denies any wrongdoing - is refusing to accept his television career is over. Allegations against Gino D'Acampo One woman claimed Gino told her he would "like to turn me over and f*** me up the a*** against the kitchen counter" in 2011. Another woman alleged he opened the door only wearing his boxer shorts and said "Oh, don't worry, it's only small" while pointing towards his penis. In 2018 while on set for the filming of Gordon, Gino and Fred's Road Trip, Gino allegedly said he "felt like f******" one morning. The same year Gino is alleged to have made a comment about another young female colleague who claimed he said: "Shouldn't we be talking about her t***, they're perfect, they're like a mouthful." Another alleged he told a young staff member: "When are we all going to get drunk and have sex together." A woman told ITV she saw Gino appearing to threaten a young colleague over an ice cream in 2019, he allegedly said "if you don't get me a Cornetto I will f*** your girlfriend". Soft rebrand As well as ramping up his presence on content creation online, last month, Gino announced he's filming a new cooking show, An Italian in Malta. It's not known which production company it's been picked up by or when it will air. An insider told The Sun: "Gino knows he's persona non grata at ITV, so the plan now is to rebuild his reputation elsewhere quietly and carefully. "He's been telling people this new travel series is about food and culture, but really it's a soft rebrand. If it lands well internationally, he can turn around and say, 'look, I've still got it'. "Gino thinks he's being smart about not throwing himself straight back into the UK spotlight. The idea is to go away, be seen working, stay visible, but not too visible and then come back once the dust has settled." 7 Gino has attempted to show a different side to his working environment on social media Credit: Instagram 7 Gino cuddles his staff working at one of his Italian restaurants Credit: Instagram 7 He put on a united front with his team following the scandal Credit: Instagram 7 Gino angered fans with his video showing of live quails Credit: Instagram 'A welcome distraction' It is understood that Gino is secretly relieved that other presenters are copping the heat in the public eye too. "With Gregg Wallace's scandal exploding, as well as John Torode's recent sacking, there's a sense that the spotlight might shift and the focus will be on him. He's hoping by using the distraction, he can quietly edge back into the fold. "He's not naive, he knows he's not getting a primetime ITV slot anytime soon. But if he proves he can behave and audiences abroad respond well, the UK execs might just look twice. "It's early days, but there's talk of him expanding the format to other countries if Malta and Ireland go well. He's already been in touch with producers in southern Europe about spin-offs." It's believed Gino is also pinning hopes on his upcoming ventures in Australia paving the way for him to get back into good graces in Blighty too. Gino is set to split his time between the UK and Down Under over the next few years, as he is planning to launch two new restaurants and a cookware line in Oz. 'He's been inundated with offers Down Under following a really successful tour there," a source told us. 'He spent some time in Australia a few years ago, and loved it. He still has a large social media following and plans to capitalise on that in the next stage of his career.' It's thought that Gino hopes he'll land more TV work in Australia, which might then encourage British telly bosses to take another chance on him. "Gino knows it won't be easy, but he's confident he can rebuild his reputation and one day, he's convinced he will be back on UK screens." 7 His behaviour on set has been called into question Credit: Rex Features Gino was a regular chef on This Morning from 2009 - forming a close friendship with then-hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield. But when an ITV News report in February first revealed the allegations against Gino on set, Holly distanced herself publicly from her once firm friend. His former ITV co-stars Gordon Ramsay and Fred Sirieix also appear to have stepped back from their friendship. In 2022 an internal investigation into Gino was launched at production company Betty TV in relation to alleged inappropriate behaviour and language on the set of Gino's Italy – Like Mamma Used to Make. The production company Objective Media Group said in an email seen by ITV in 2024 that issues also arose in 2023 on the Emission Impossible set. Gino told ITV News at the time: "I would not do anything that I thought would upset or distress anyone. This is simply not in my nature. I do not recognise the version of events being put to me. "Not only have these allegations never been raised with me before, I have been repeatedly supported by executives at the highest level and was commissioned on prime-time programmes during the period in which it is now suggested I was acting inappropriately. "I am a father, husband and have worked with well over 1,500 people on around 80 productions in my career, which I have been so proud of. I take such matters extremely seriously and the suggestion that I have acted in an improper way against is deeply upsetting." The Sun has approached Gino for comment.

I tried going to bed as ugly as possible to wake up more beautiful – my partner thought I was mad but this item worked
Plus, what experts say we should really do at nighttime for a beauty routine OH SHEET I tried going to bed as ugly as possible to wake up more beautiful – my partner thought I was mad but this item worked THEY call it 'beauty sleep,' but let's be honest - just because I've clocked in a solid eight hours doesn't mean I wake up looking fresh-faced. And some days more than others it certainly takes a bit of work on my puffy eyes and messy hair before I look presentable for the world. 10 The rose of the 'morning shed' has taken over TikTok, racking up over 100million in views worldwide Credit: TikTok/@eringett7 10 The idea is that you go to bed after applying multiple beauty products - and 'shed' them off in the morning to have a 'glow up' Credit: TikTok/@@victoriasamson And sometimes there just isn't time for a miracle, if I'm rushing to work or I'm late out the house. But could TikTokers have the ultimate clever solution to help my predicament? One of the booming beauty trends that has over 100million views is the 'morning shed' - and it looks baffling from first glance. The #morningshed trend is about maximising beauty sleep by applying multiple beauty products before bed, then "shedding" them in the morning to reveal a fresher, more flawless complexion. More on beauty PRICE SNATCH I swear by my secret hack to get beauty buys in Boots for HALF the price TikTokers such as @victoriasamson and @eringetty7 alone have racked up millions of views showing their step-by-step routine, which include putting hair in overnight, heatless curlers and sleeping in a collagen mask. While the nighttime get-up may look silly to some, I was willing to put it to the test to see if it could be the short cut I was craving for looking fresher, faster. MY TEST 10 I applied lip stain, a sleep-in face mask, heatless curlers and a very sexy chin strap Credit: THE SUN After ordering all my products online, I began my nighttime beauty prep with slightly damp hair and a set of heatless curlers, which cost just £2.25 from Shein. I wrapped my hair around the soft band, hoping to wake up with effortless waves. Next, I applied a £12 lip stain by Sacheu, which promised a naturally rosy tint by morning once wiped off. Then came the viral face mask that's been making the rounds on TikTok—part of the ever-growing Korean skincare craze. Morning shed skincare routine and benefits explained This ChicNana Bio Collagen Face Mask, costing £7.99 for four, is designed to be worn overnight; it goes on visible but gradually turns clear as it absorbs into your skin. As a side-sleeper, I was skeptical it would stay put, but I gave it a try. I followed that with a dab of castor oil on my lashes—meant to strengthen and promote growth over time. No overnight miracles expected there, but worth a shot. Then came the slightly absurd-looking £3.99 chin strap from Amazon, promising to 'sculpt jawlines' and 'prevent sagging skin.' I looked absolutely unhinged by this point—but I wasn't done. Finally, I applied the £14.99 SunnieSide Skin Beauty Sleep Tape—a mouth tape that claims to improve sleep, support jawline definition, and lock in overnight lip treatments. 10 My partner got the shock of his life as this 'beauty' showed up in the bedroom Credit: THE SUN 10 I was worried I wouldn't be able to sleep with all of this on my face and head Credit: THE SUN 10 Apparently I had nailed the King Baldwin from Kingdom of Heaven look, according to my partner Credit: Other20th Century Fox As I climbed into bed, my partner audibly gasped and joked that I looked like King Baldwin from Kingdom of Heaven. I couldn't even argue, I did look terrifying. Despite feeling ridiculous and unsure I'd manage to drift off at all, I actually slept through the night without any issues. THE RESULT 10 By morning, the chin strap had fallen off - but the face mask had gone clear and done its magic Credit: THE SUN 10 I was ready to 'shed' off all the products to see the transformation Credit: THE SUN 10 My hair had transformed overnight without needing heat Credit: THE SUN I woke up hoping I'd somehow transformed into a Disney princess overnight—but reality, as always, had other plans. My chin strap had wandered off sometime during the night, and my lip stain had smudged across my face—probably thanks to the moisture from the sheet mask (which, miraculously, had stayed in place and left my skin feeling surprisingly fresh). The mouth tape held firm too, and even better, it completely silenced my partner's snoring—thanks to the strip I'd 'generously' applied to him in solidarity. I was honestly amazed, and safe to say, he'll be wearing one every night from now on. The real triumph, though, was my hair. It had curled perfectly overnight, leaving it bouncy and ready to go—no styling required. I was least impressed with the lip stain, which had left my lips dry, so I gave them a boost with my Silk'n Lumilips LED Lip Mask, which is designed to visibly plump and brightens lips and the surrounding area. A quick swipe of mascara, and I was ready to head out the door, feeling put-together with barely any effort at all - in the morning at least. 10 I plumped my lips in seconds with the Silk'n Lumilips LED Lip Mask Credit: SUPPLIED WHAT DO EXPERTS SAY? But what should we really be doing for our skincare routine, and is the 'morning shed' too over the top? Shubhi Grover, Head of Consumer and Beauty at Sapience Communications, told Fabulous: "I believe there's a fine line between a ritual and a routine. "While elaborate morning shed routines may look visually impressive on TikTok, much of the real skin and hair work actually happens overnight, when the body is in recovery mode. 'Your evening routine should be intentional and not overwhelming, as most of us make that mistake. 'A few high-quality, well-formulated products tailored to your skin or hair type can go further than a 12-step ritual you won't sustain. 'I recommend focusing on hydration, barrier repair, and scalp care at night, to wake up glowing without the excessive morning 'undoing.'' The dream nighttime beauty routine, according to experts SHUBHI Grover, Head of Consumer and Beauty at Sapience Communications gave her absolute non-negotiables for nighttime... A gentle double cleanse to remove SPF and pollutants - double cleanse is my holy grail An ultra-hydrating serum with peptides or hyaluronic acid A silk pillowcase to reduce friction - great for both skin and hair And on my hair: a light scalp serum and a loose protective braid or silk bonnet She added: 'I would say it's less faff, more science, and most importantly, consistency goes a long way." CONCLUSION While the full nighttime beauty routine was fun to try, I'll be honest—it's a bit too time-consuming to keep up with every single night. That said, there are definitely a few steps I'll be sticking with. The heatless curlers are an easy win—no heat damage, and I wake up with soft, bouncy waves. The overnight face mask left my skin feeling fresh and hydrated, so that's staying in rotation too. And as for the mouth tape? I might not wear it every night, but my partner definitely will—his snore-free sleep was the real MVP of the whole experiment.
