NYPD Retirees Restore 1987 Chevy Caprice to Honor Fallen Officer
A group of retired NYPD officers is undertaking an emotional restoration project, bringing a historic 1987 Chevy Caprice police car back to life as a tribute to Officer Eddie Byrne, who was assassinated while sitting in the vehicle 37 years ago.
Byrne, just 22 years old, was fatally shot five times in 1988 while guarding the home of a witness in a case against a drug gang in Queens. His murder shocked the city and became a rallying point for law enforcement efforts against organized crime.
Now, retired officers Jason Caputo and John Schwartz, alongside other former members of the NYPD and Nassau County Police Department, are working to restore the very car Byrne was killed in. Their goal is to place the fully restored vehicle on display at the NYPD Police Academy as a permanent reminder of the dangers officers face.
The project has been years in the making, with bureaucratic delays keeping the officers from starting the restoration until recently. In addition to damage sustained during the 1988 attack, the Caprice has suffered extensive wear over time. It was also submerged during Hurricane Sandy and later survived a fire at the Erie Basin NYPD evidence warehouse. Despite these challenges, the team is determined to bring the car back to its original condition.
'Knowing that an officer at the age of 22 was shot because of his uniform, because of the vehicle he sat in, and the job he was doing—it makes this restoration even more meaningful,' Caputo said.
The restoration, expected to cost up to $50,000, will be funded entirely through private donations. The team hopes to complete the project within a year, unveiling it on February 26, the anniversary of Byrne's death. A key feature of the restored car will be a bullet hole still visible in its body, serving as a stark and sobering reminder of the sacrifices made in law enforcement.

Alleged moped thieves terrorize riders in Queens, police say
QUEENS, N.Y. (PIX11) — A trio of alleged moped thieves has been terrorizing riders in Queens for the past few months, police said Tuesday. The suspects have allegedly threatened riders with a knife before taking their mopeds in a spate of incidents from June to August, according to the NYPD. The spree started when a 27-year-old man riding a moped was hit in the head with a chain and robbed at knifepoint on 107th Street at around 11:30 p.m. on June 30, police said. EMS staff treated the victim at the scene for minor injuries. The trio struck twice on Aug. 7 when they ambushed moped riders on Linden Boulevard and then again on 103rd Street and Rockway Boulevard. The suspects allegedly took the victims' keys and rode off on the stolen mopeds, police said. The men allegedly stole two more mopeds on July 20 near 101st Street and Drew Avenue and 122nd Street and Liberty Avenue, cops said. There were no injuries in the July and August incidents. Police are still searching for the suspects. Slain NYPD officer's wife gives birth to another son: 'Their father's legacy of service'
The wife of a slain New York City Police Department officer killed in a mass shooting at a Manhattan high-rise last month gave birth to the couple's third child this week, the agency announced. 'Out of tragedy, a new life has entered this world,' NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch wrote in a Monday, Aug. 18 post on X. 'Last night, Jamila Islam, the wife of Detective First Grade Didarul Islam, gave birth to their beautiful son, Arham.' A nearly four-year NYPD veteran, Islam was killed in a mass shooting on July 28, in a skyscraper where he was working a paid security detail. At the time of his death, in a statement on the precinct's social media, city leaders called Islam 'a husband, father, and dedicated public servant' and said he was survived by two young sons and his wife, who had been expecting the couple's third child. In the commissioner's birth announcement on Monday, she wrote the newborn boy joins two big brothers, Ahyan and Azhaan. 'Together, they will carry forward their father's legacy of service and courage − a legacy the NYPD will guard and uphold with the same devotion Didar gave to this city,' Tisch wrote. 'Jamila, Ahyan, Azhaan, and now, Arham will forever be part of the NYPD family.' Shark attacks man spearfishing: American tourist in Bahamas with 'severe injuries' Where was skyscraper mass shooting? The mass shooting took place at 345 Park Ave in the city's Midtown neighborhood when a man opened fire in the building's lobby with an AR-style rifle. The shooter, identified by officials as 27-year-old Shane Tamura of Nevada, killed three other people: Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner, Rudin Management associate Julia Hyman and Aland Etienne, another security officer, before reportedly killing himself. An immigrant from Bangladesh, the slain officer worked the 47th Precinct in the northern Bronx, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced after his death. Widow of police officer killed in New York mass shooting gives birth to 3rd child
The widow of the off-duty police officer who was killed in a mass shooting last month in New York City's Midtown Manhattan gave birth to the couple's third child on Sunday. New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch shared the news in an X post Monday, writing, "Out of tragedy, a new life has entered this world. Last night, Jamila Islam, the wife of Detective First Grade Didarul Islam, gave birth to their beautiful son, Arham." Didarul Islam, 36, was one of four people killed in the mass shooting that unfolded at 345 Park Avenue on July 28 in the office building's lobby and upper floors. The building is home to the headquarters of the NFL, the offices of private equity company Blackstone, real estate firm Rudin Management and other companies. Islam was off duty at the time and working a security job when he was fatally shot. Tisch included two family photos in her post, one of newborn Arham swaddled in a blanket and another of Ahyan and Azhaan smiling as one of the brothers holds his new sibling. "Arham joins his two big brothers, Ahyan and Azhaan," Tisch continued. "Together, they will carry forward their father's legacy of service and courage -- a legacy the NYPD will guard and uphold with the same devotion Didar gave to this city. Jamila, Ahyan, Azhaan, and now, Arham will forever be part of the NYPD family." A funeral was held for Islam on July 31, where a statement was read on behalf of his wife. "My husband was a man of faith, integrity and service," Jamila Islam's statement read. "He was a devoted son, a beloved brother and the most loving father. To our family, he was our world." "Though my heart is broken, I find comfort knowing that his sacrifice may have saved others in that lobby -- people who were able to go home to their families that day." The alleged shooter, Shane Tamura, fired 47 rounds with an M4-style rifle, according to the NYPD. New York City Mayor Eric Adams said previously that Tamura appeared to be targeting the NFL headquarters. NYPD investigators stated last month that they were working to determine a motive behind the shooting, but said Tamura left a note claiming he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, a brain disease marked by repeated blows to the head and often linked to military veterans and athletes, like football players. In addition to Didarul Islam, three others -- Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner, security guard Aland Etienne, and Rudin Management employee Julia Hyman -- were killed in the mass shooting.
