Pentagon taps four commercial tech firms to expand military use of AI

Yahoo4 days ago
The Pentagon announced Monday it has chosen Google, xAI, Anthropic and OpenAI to help the U.S. military expand its use of advanced artificial intelligence capabilities.
Each company received a contract worth up to $200 million, according to a notice from the Chief Digital and AI Office. The firms will help the Defense Department develop agentic AI workflows for key national security missions.
'Leveraging commercially available solutions into an integrated capabilities approach will accelerate the use of advanced AI as part of our Joint mission essential tasks in our warfighting domain as well as intelligence, business, and enterprise information systems,' Chief Digital and AI Officer Doug Matty said in a statement.
The military services have adopted generative AI tools to varying degrees and for a range of tasks — from tech support to finding files. Agentic AI uses more advanced reasoning to address and act on more complex challenges.
The Pentagon didn't specify what missions the program would support, but the department has said it wants to use AI in areas like intelligence analysis, campaigning, logistics and data collection.
Following the announcement, Elon Musk-owned xAI — whose conversational AI chatbot goes by the name Grok — unveiled a U.S. government-specific production line called Grok for Government.
Grok has come under scrutiny after an update generated a slew of racists and antisemitic comments. In one instance, the chatbot referred to itself as 'MechaHitler.'
The award follows Musk's months-long push from within the White House to slash federal spending. Amid a public falling out earlier this summer, President Donald Trump has threatened to cancel government contracts awarded to Musk's companies. Under this new deal, however, the billionaire's federal work would expand.

Luxury carmaker fires shot at Tesla in robotaxi wars

Luxury carmaker fires shot at Tesla in robotaxi wars originally appeared on TheStreet. Tesla's () has been steering the robotaxi narrative for the longest time, but recently a brand new player quietly slid into the frame. Behind the scenes, one luxury EV maker just threw its hat into the race and is ready to challenge the status quo. 💵💰💰💵 At this point, it's not trying to out-Tesla Tesla, but instead aim for an entirely different lane. As we see partnerships evolving quickly and rivals repositioning, the road ahead for autonomous driving has become a lot more crowded and a lot more interesting. The robotaxi race just got real Robotaxis aren't science fiction anymore, as they turn into arguably the fastest-growing bet in the tech space. To put things in perspective, estimates suggest that the global market for autonomous ride services could explode from $4.4 billion this year to $125 billion by 2034. That's a massive 45% compound annual growth rate, led by cheaper sensors, smarter AI, and a major push to cut costs in urban transit. Tesla finally entered the game in June with the quiet launch of its invite-only Robotaxi service in Austin. The cars operate using Tesla's robust camera-only Full Self-Driving system, avoiding the need for expensive Light Detection and Ranging (lidar) and instead relying solely on vision and machine believes that's the edge Tesla needs in scaling a lot faster and cheaper than the competition. But it's still early days. We've already seen glitchy behavior, including phantom braking and navigation errors, which complicates the bullish thesis. Google's Waymo, on the other hand, is the veteran. It recently crossed the 100 million driverless miles mark with zero humans behind the wheel. Its coverage in cities like Phoenix and Austin dwarfs Tesla's footprint, giving it a massive data lead in improving its software. China's not sitting this out, either. has already dished out its seventh-gen robotaxi and is testing in multiple countries. WeRide, another robotaxi upstart, launched Southeast Asia's first fully autonomous robobus in Singapore, aiming to expand swiftly. And then there's Uber, which is effectively becoming the nerve center of the robotaxi era. In Atlanta, riders can now hail Waymo vehicles directly through Uber. Similarly, in Austin, Waymo's 90-square-mile service also runs on Uber's platform. More News: Moody's drops 2-word warning on housing market Rigetti shakes up quantum computing with bold advance JPMorgan reveals 9 stocks with major problems By owning the rider interface and centralizing fleet access, Uber is positioning itself as the gatekeeper for robotaxi adoption. Lucid takes its shot at Tesla in the robotaxi wars Lucid () just made a massive foray into the robotaxi arena, and Wall Street's starting to pay attention. Luxury EV maker Lucid is teaming up with Uber and autonomous tech firm Nuro to roll out 20,000 Gravity SUVs on Uber's network over the next six years. Each of these cars will be equipped with Nuro's Level 4 self-driving technology, signaling Lucid's largest leap yet into AI-powered mobility. Morgan Stanley's Adam Jonas hailed that partnership as 'strategic.'Jonas says this isn't your regular one-off announcement; it's a clear sign that Lucid is looking to carve out a key position in the robotaxi race that's been dominated by Tesla and Waymo. According to Jonas, Lucid has mostly been an under-the-radar player in the self-driving conversation. However, the Uber–Nuro deal could change that, helping the EV startup move beyond luxury retail and into recurring revenue streams. The Gravity SUV, Lucid's next blowout launch, now carries a lot more weight. Jonas feels the vehicle should be treated as a platform, not just for electric driving, but for autonomy and smart mobility partnerships. That makes the Uber deal a lot less about volume and more about signaling where Lucid is headed next. Uber is shelling out big money, with a $300 million investment in Lucid. That's not enough to solve the company's cash burn troubles, but it helps in a big way. Also, it puts Uber in a much stronger position to shape Lucid's roadmap. For a company that's been called a "Tesla-lite," this is Lucid's most ambitious pivot yet. Whether it pays off long-term is up for debate, but it's clear that Lucid just pulled up a seat at the lucrative robotaxi carmaker fires shot at Tesla in robotaxi wars first appeared on TheStreet on Jul 18, 2025 This story was originally reported by TheStreet on Jul 18, 2025, where it first appeared. ‘Don't Pull the Trigger Just Yet,' Says Top Investor About Nvidia Stock

Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) stock has been on a wild ride over the past few months – after hitting a 52-week low during the early April Liberation Day slump, it has since bounced back ~83%. Elevate Your Investing Strategy: Take advantage of TipRanks Premium at 50% off! Unlock powerful investing tools, advanced data, and expert analyst insights to help you invest with confidence. Much of that rebound was driven by renewed investor optimism around AI demand, and the past week brought even more fuel to the fire. The Trump administration assured Nvidia that it would be allowed to export its advanced AI chips to China – a major relief, given that the company had taken a $4.5 billion revenue hit in Fiscal Q1 2026 due to those export restrictions. With this regulatory overhang lifted, some investors might assume Nvidia is back on an unstoppable path. But not everyone is convinced that now is the time to pile in. Top investor Brett Ashcroft Green urges caution, arguing that the recent rally may have already run too far, too fast. 'As enthusiastic as I am, the run has just been too far too fast, and I am downgrading NVDA,' explains Green, who ranks among the top 4% of TipRanks' stock pros. The investor doesn't question Nvidia's fundamental strength. In fact, he believes the long-term growth story remains intact, especially with a potential catalyst on the horizon: sovereign AI. These country-specific systems, tailored to local regulations, have been championed by CEO Jensen Huang for years. The recent U.S. government adoption of AI tools like Elon Musk's Grok may be just the beginning of a broader global push. If sovereign AI gains traction, demand for Nvidia's chips could scale even faster than current forecasts suggest. However, Green tempers expectations by pointing out supply constraints. Nvidia likely won't be able to manufacture chips fast enough to meet soaring global demand, which naturally limits its growth trajectory. What's more concerning to Green, as noted, is how much more expensive the stock has become from a valuation perspective. In April, Nvidia had the third-lowest Forward Price-to-Earnings (P/E) ratio among the Magnificent 7 at 21.31x. It now holds the second-highest at 39.75x. 'If you own it, hold it and enjoy the ride, if not, I'd personally wait for better prices as the market basks in giddiness,' Green concludes, rating NVDA shares a Hold (i.e., Neutral). (To watch Green's track record, click here) Wall Street, meanwhile, maintains a bullish stance. NVDA holds a Strong Buy consensus, backed by 34 Buy ratings versus just 3 Holds and a single Sell. However, the average price target of $182.06 implies only ~6% upside from current levels, suggesting that while sentiment remains positive, much of the expected growth may already be priced in. It will be interesting to see whether analysts revise their targets upward in the coming weeks.
