The owl mascot for Pittsburgh-based Duolingo is not dead after all, according to social media posts by the organization.
At least two posts appeared on the company's social media accounts on Monday, declaring "Legends never die" and "Duo is back."

The green owl has become a memeable internet sensation for the way some users of the language learning app think he threatens them to do their lessons.
Over the last two weeks, Duolingo has posted multiple times to their social media accounts mourning Duo and their other cast of characters, including Falstaff the bear.
Duo said, "faking my death was the test and you all passed."
Turns out, Duo's death may have just been a ploy to get Duolingo users back on the app to do their language lessons.
In a social media post last week, the company said 50 billion XP, or learning points, were needed to revive the owl. And that's just what happened as thousands returned to their language learning lessons to collectively bring the mascot back to life.
The saga of Duo's reported death
The saga began on Feb. 11 with an "important announcement" from the company posted to the social media platform X.
"It is with heavy hearts that we inform you that Duo, formally known as The Duolingo Owl, is dead," the statement read.
Duolingo said "authorities" were investigating his cause of death and the company was cooperating.
"Tbh, he probably died waiting for you to do your lesson, but what do we know," the statement said. "We are aware he had many enemies, but we kindly ask that you refrain from sharing why you hate him in the comments. If you feel inclined to share, please also include your credit card number so we can automatically sign you up for Duolingo Max in his memory."
In a statement to KDKA-TV, a spokesperson confirmed that Duo is in fact dead as part of a brand marketing campaign.
The plot thickened a day later when Duolingo posted a video to social media asking for help identifying the driver of a Tesla Cybertruck that hit the owl mascot in a parking lot, launching it up into the sky and apparently past the gates of hell.
"Please post any leads on Twitter," Duolingo wrote, adding, "Thank you for your patience with us during these trying times."
Duolingo says it has embraced a "wholesome and unhinged" brand tone after its green owl mascot turned into an internet sensation.
"Our mascot was initially designed to encourage regular practice. But once the internet got their hands on him, he grew into a more complicated — even menacing — character with his own lore. He's still cute and cuddly. But he's also willing to temporarily relocate your family to ensure you finish your lessons," the company wrote in its handbook.

The Animal Humane Society estimates that up to 250,000 animals per year are victims of hoarding. Newsweek spoke to Justine Wilkinson, an environmental health officer at Northumbria University in England, who studies the psychological roots of animal hoarding. Wilkinson said: "People who hoard animals often report living in a chaotic domestic environment during childhood; childhood problems with caregivers, e.g., unstable, neglectful, abusive, absent, or inconsistent; and stressful life events in child and adulthood. "They also report relying on animals during childhood, suggesting provision as alternative attachment figures and providing security without fear of rejection." The clip features not just Simon, but also Moose—the first horse who approaches Petal. The 10-year-old black horse goes in for what sanctuary owner Cimini described as an "abrasive" sniff, while Simon follows with his now-infamous nibble. "He is still so curious as he is young," Cimini said. Both horses were rescued from slaughter and have since thrived at Rancho Relaxo. "Simon is a very sociable horse," Cimini said. "He was rescued from slaughter two years ago, and you would never know he came from facing that terrible fate. He is a happy, affectionate horse. "Moose was originally rescued from slaughter by a rescue that ended up failing the animals under their care—which is when we stepped in. So, he was saved twice," Cimini added. Having grown up in a home where Inside Edition was always on TV, Pilgrim tells PEOPLE that she's admittedly still "slightly floored" that she gets to be the new anchor of the beloved newsmagazine. She'll be the program's fourth-ever host, succeeding Deborah Norville, who wrapped her tenure on the show in May. "I look back at my first job, and my mom was still sending me money to eat because she was worried I wasn't eating. I think about the countless people who've poured into me and helped me get better at this to then get to this point," says Pilgrim, who shares 3-year-old daughter Ella with her husband Ed Hartigan. "My mother, when I told her I was interviewing for this job, lost her mind. I watched Inside Edition growing up. It was on in our house, but also in my first TV job, it was a show that came on between newscasts," Pilgrim adds of the serendipity of her new gig. Still, the former GMA3: What You Need to Know anchor admits that she certainly feels "the weight" of stepping into a new role at an institution of a show like Inside Edition. "It's a legacy," she says, adding that doing the show after Norville is no small task, either. "To be in this job now at a point where I really appreciate everything that it is? I can't believe the job [was] open! Deborah was really nice and sent me an email, and at the end of the email she was floored that she had been in the job for as long as she had. She said that was because it was just such a great job, so why would you leave? It's one of those jobs that people don't leave because it's great." Pilgrim was born into a military family in Seoul, South Korea. Her mother is Korean, and her father hails from South Carolina. She grew up as a self-proclaimed Army brat. "We moved all over the place, literally four times in first grade, I always tell everyone that," Pilgrim says with a laugh. "But what's nice about that is I feel like traveling a lot is good training for a journalist because you learn how to make friends, you feel uncomfortable when you meet people you've never met before, and you know that that's going to happen every time. It conditions you to just say the first thing and make the first move to have a conversation." The innate curiosity and interpersonal skills Pilgrim developed early would continue to serve her well — by the time she was in high school, the family had settled back in South Carolina. "We grew up eating kimchi and country-fried steak and collard greens. It was a weird collision of cultural differences that ended up all one thing," she says. "And I think the luxury of having a parent who's not from where you grow up — a different country — very different than South Carolina, you realize how small the world is because you're traveling back and forth between those two different families. Pilgrim decided to pursue journalism while in college after taking classes in the subject and working for a local TV station while she was still in school. "I liked the access that it gave me. Whether you were covering a sporting event or a community event, you got to be there in the middle of it. That I found to be kind of addictive," she says. After working on a story where her subject confessed to a crime mid-interview and was subsequently arrested thanks in part to her reporting, Pilgrim knew she'd found the line of work she was meant to be doing all along. "[That man] said all the things to me that day because I was in many ways naive, but I was curious and very human with him. I wasn't asking him probing or prying questions. I was letting him talk and giving him human responses," Pilgrim explains, "and our news director at the time, she said something to me that I've never forgotten and I try to hold on to no matter how many interviews that I do.
