Zverev, Khachanov face off in Toronto semi-finals
TORONTO: Alexander Zverev reached his 21st Masters 1000 semi-final on Monday by ending the Canadian title defense of Alexei Popyrin 6-7 (8/10), 6-4, 6-3 at the ATP Toronto Masters. The final game, with Zverev serving at 5-3, was interrupted by shouts from an unruly fan who was tossed out by security. The distraction ended a run of 14 consecutive points on serve, with the seed double-faulting once he was able to continue serving.
He finished off the evening with a sharp volley winner at the net on his first match point. Zverev completed his 40th win of the year in just over two and a half hours. The world number three won the tournament in 2017 but had not been past the quarter-finals in Canada since. 'After losing the first set, I had to tell myself we were both playing well,' the holder of seven Masters trophies said. 'I had one or two mistakes at the end of the first, but it was a high-level match. 'I felt that if I kept playing well, I would get my chances - and I did. I can't complain about the second and third sets.'
Zverev will bid for the oddly scheduled Thursday final against three-time semi-finalist Karen Khachanov, who dismissed young American Alex Michelsen 6-4, 7-6 (7/3). 'It was a very close, competitive match,' Khachanov said. 'I had to come back from some tough situations. 'How you handle that mentally is important. I was glad to close it out in the second set. 'I had to try and not give him the opportunity to step in and attack; that's what I did today.' Zverev has won five of the seven matches he has played against Khachanov. Popyrin and Zverev duelled throughout the evenly matched 71-minute opening set as it went into a tiebreaker.
Zverev was unable to convert on two winning chances, but Popyrin came good on his own second opportunity with a net cord winner that caught his opponent stranded at the baseline. The German began to turn the tables in the second set, taking a 4-1 lead only to see the Aussie level at 4-all. Zverev pulled away to level the match at a set apiece, breaking for 6-4 as Popyrin sent a volley wide. The top seed began the final set with a 3-0 lead on his way into the tournament final four at the pre-US Open event. Popyrin remains winless against Zverev after losing all four of their matches. — AFP

'This is a viable career, to become a professional umpire, for men and women, girls and boys. I'm able to make a living doing it and I'm passionate about it. I just work harder every day and get better before tomorrow.' In the game, Drake Baldwin singled in two runs and Michael Harris smashed a three-run home run in the seventh inning to lead the Braves over Miami, 7-1. 'Long, hard journey' Pawol began working as an umpire in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League in 2016 and last year became the first woman umpire in a pre-season spring training game since Ria Cortesio in 2007 before making her historic breakthrough in a regular-season game. 'It has been a long, hard journey to the top here,' Pawol said. 'I'm just extremely focused on getting my calls right and I'm so grateful to all those along the way who have helped me become a better umpire every day.' MLB's addition of a female umpire comes 28 years after Violet Palmer became the first woman to referee an NBA game in October 1997. Shannon Eastin was the NFL's first female on-field official, hired as a replacement when regular officials were locked out in a contract dispute in September 2012. Three years later, Sarah Thomas became the NFL's first full-time female on-field official and last year, two women worked on the officiating crew of the same game for the first time. Stephanie Frappart of France was the first woman to referee a men's World Cup match when she worked a group stage match in 2022. — AFP

PSG to sign Lille's keeper Chevalier
Lucas Chevalier PARIS: European champions Paris Saint-Germain have reached an agreement with Lille to sign highly-rated goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, a source close to the negotiations told AFP on Friday. Chevalier, 23, will sign a five-year contract and command a fee of around 40 million euros ($46.5 million). He was nominated on Thursday for this year's men's Yashin Trophy for best goalkeeper at the Ballon d'Or gala after exceptional performances in Ligue 1 and the Champions League last season. Lille finished fifth in Ligue 1 last season and qualified for the Europa League. Chevalier's arrival is likely to pose questions over the future of Italian international 'keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma at PSG. It is believed PSG sporting director Luis Campos has given Chevalier certain guarantees about his place in the squad, and the Frenchman's ability with his feet would align more with Luis Enrique's style of play. All of which would point to Donnarumma, 26, being relegated to the role of back-up. A position that would be little to the taste of Italy's number one, who was named the world's best goalkeeper in April by the CIES Football Observatory. PSG have previously dabbled with having a first-choice 'keeper for league matches and another for European and cup matches, however this system rarely bore fruit in the past. Donnarumma, who was outstanding as PSG won the Champions League for the first time in their history last term, is in the final year of his contract and would likely interest Premier League clubs. Indeed England seems the most plausible option for Donnarumma, with both Manchester clubs and Chelsea showing interest. Nawaz sparks Pakistan to five-wicket ODI win over West Indies

Nawaz and Hussain Talat formed a sixth-wicket partnership of 104 not out to rally the visitors in the day-night affair, with game two on Sunday and the concluder on Tuesday. West Indies went 280 all out with Evin Lewis leading the way on 60 from 62 balls with three sixes and five fours while Shai Hope added 55 and Roston Chase contributed 53. Needing 281 to win, Pakistan got 53 runs from Mohammad Rizwan before he was bowled lbw by Shamar Joseph in the 38th over with the visitors still 101 runs shy of victory, setting the stage for heroics by Nawaz and Talat.
