Sogip to create 30,000 jobs, locals urged to prepare

SIPITANG: The MYFutureJobs X SSMJ @ Sipitang 2025 Career Carnival, organised by the Sabah Maju Jaya (SSMJ) Secretariat, saw a strong turnout with around 1,100 attendees and 14 individuals successfully securing employment during the event. Held at Dewan Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Pengiran Omar 2, the carnival attracted students, job seekers, and recent graduates from the district and surrounding areas. Decisions for other applicants are still pending. A total of 15 employers, including five oil and gas companies, took part alongside 15 exhibitors, offering a wide range of opportunities and information to the participants. Qhazanah Sabah Berhad Chairman and Sindumin Assemblyman, Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob, officiated the event and delivered a special presentation titled Readiness to Embrace the Investment Impact at SOGIP. He said the need for the local community to understand and prepare for the opportunities arising from the development of the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park (SOGIP), which is expected to generate approximately 30,000 job opportunities during both its construction and operational phases. 'The spillover benefits from SOGIP are not limited to direct employment. Entrepreneurs, local vendors, farmers, livestock breeders, and fishermen will also stand to gain,' he said. Dr Yusof encouraged locals to be proactive by tapping into related support services such as car workshops, plumbing, electrical work, barbering, and accommodation facilities. 'At the same time, I must caution that if we are not prepared, these opportunities may be taken up by outsiders,' he added. He reiterated the call while debating the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday. Advertisement Madius questioned why the agreed financial rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) remain unfulfilled despite being constitutionally guaranteed. The Upko Honorary President said Sabahans should not continue to suffer from underdevelopment and poverty due to the failure to deliver the promised revenue returns. He pointed out that more than 80 per cent of the country's RM1.3 trillion debt has been spent in Peninsular Malaysia, while resource-rich Sabah remains inadequately funded. The former Sabah Deputy Chief Minister stressed that Sabah could independently fund basic infrastructure and economic development if it received its rightful 40 per cent share. Asiawater Sabah aims to introduce new technology, knowledge to the state

KOTA KINABALU: The Asiawater Versi Sabah 2025 Conference and Expo officially opened at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) on Wednesday, intending to introduce new technology and knowledge to the State. Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Abidin Madingkir, who represented Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, officiated the event – the first Asiawater edition held in Sabah and Borneo. Advertisement Organised by Informa Markets and supported by Jetama Sdn Bhd as strategic partner, the two-day event attracted over 2,000 participants and featured more than 40 booths showcasing water supply and treatment technologies. Jetama Water Chairman Liau Fui Fui said the event allows Sabah to learn from regional players and explore solutions to local supply issues, such as pipe airlocks and pressure loss. She said Jetama's technical team would assess if certain innovations, such as pressure recovery systems, are suitable for Sabah's infrastructure. Liau added that Asiawater also helps raise Sabah's profile across sectors and supports knowledge sharing between government and industry players. Cathay Pacific orders 14 Boeing jets in US$8.1 billion deal

HONG KONG: Cathay Pacific has announced a US$8.1 billion deal to purchase 14 Boeing 777-9 aircraft. The airline confirmed the order in a filing to the Hong Kong stock exchange. Advertisement Cathay also secured the option to buy seven additional Boeing 777-9 jets. The new aircraft are expected to be delivered by 2034. Cathay currently operates a fleet of over 230 mostly passenger planes. This marks the airline's first major order with Boeing in more than a decade. Advertisement Boeing stated the deal brings its 777-9 order book to 35 aircraft. The 777-9 is described as the world's largest twin-engine airplane. Boeing highlighted the aircraft's fuel efficiency and lower emissions. Hong Kong's aviation sector faced severe challenges during the Covid-19 pandemic. Strict travel restrictions kept the city isolated until late 2022. Cathay reported a slight profit increase to US$1.27 billion in 2024. The airline confirmed flights had returned to pre-pandemic levels earlier this year. First-half 2025 attributable profit rose to HK$3.65 billion (US$4.65 million). Total revenue grew 9.5 percent to US$6.92 billion in the same period. Cathay declared an interim dividend of HK$20 cents per share. Chairman Patrick Healy praised the company's solid financial performance. He cited higher passenger volumes and lower fuel costs as key drivers. Cathay Pacific and Hong Kong Express have added 19 new destinations in 2025. The airlines now serve over 100 passenger destinations globally. Direct flights to Brussels recently resumed after a pandemic-induced hiatus. However, profit margins dipped by 0.6 percent in the first half of 2025. Healy noted short-term challenges for budget carrier HK Express. Bookings have not yet returned to normal levels, he said.
