Tesla to launch Model 3 Plus with massive range

Yahoo20-07-2025
Tesla is reportedly working on a new variant of its Model 3 sedan, and this one might have the longest range of them all.
A new filing with China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), spotted on Thursday by Electrek, is called the Tesla Model 3+. According to the filing, the new vehicle will be a single-motor, rear-wheel drive variant with a larger, 225kW motor.
While the currently available RWD (Rear-Wheel Drive) version uses LFP battery cells, the new version uses LG's ternary lithium ion cells, which have a higher energy density. The other basic specs of the car — overall length, wheelbase length, and weight — are the same as those of the base Model 3 version.
Not all of the specs of the car are known, but what we know (along with the car's name, Model 3+) all points to this being a longer-range variant of the car.
Currently, the Tesla Model 3 with the longest range (that's the RWDe model) is listed as having 753 kilometers of range in China. The new variant could potentially exceed 800 kilometers (roughly 500 miles), which would be a first for Tesla.
In the U.S., the Model 3 with the most range can do 363 miles per the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s estimates, though in China the range figures are based on the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC) which is a bit more generous in its estimates.
The news comes shortly after a new variant of the Model Y was also filed with the MIIT. Called the Tesla Model YL, it has an extended wheelbase and three rows of seats with two seats in each, for a total of six.
There's no word on when (or if) the two new variants are coming to the U.S. and Tesla's other markets. Both are very interesting as they address two very important pain points for today's electric cars: interior space and range.

Apple set to dodge bulk of India tariffs

Apple (AAPL) is set to largely escape the Trump administration's upcoming promise of 50% tariff on goods made in India destined for the US. A White House official confirmed Wednesday that Apple's semiconductor-powered devices, which include its iPhone, will be unaffected by Trump's 25% 'reciprocal' tariffs set to go into effect Thursday. The same goes for an upcoming promise of an additional 25% levy related to India's use of Russian oil that is set to be in place in about 3 weeks' time. IPhones and other similar products will be subject to a separate tariff authority which has not yet been unveiled. Apple said during its most recent earnings call that it made the majority of its US-bound iPhones in India. The news comes after The White House announced that Apple will announce an additional $100 billion investment in US manufacturing during a 4:30 pm ET press event Wednesday. That's in addition to the $500 billion Apple said earlier this year it would invest in the country. Trump has criticized Apple's decision to move manufacturing from China to India and not the US, saying during his May trip to the Middle East that he had a 'little problem' with CEO Tim Cook. Other Trump administration officials have also lambasted Apple for not producing its phones in the US, with trade adviser Peter Navarro calling it the 'longest-running soap opera in Silicon Valley,' during a July interview with CNBC. But according to experts, it would take years for Apple to stand up a smartphone supply chain base in the US. What's more, there are no phone manufacturers in the country and not enough workers to fill the necessary roles. Todd Weaver, developer of Purism's Liberty Phone, a privacy-centric smartphone that uses US-built electronics, says it took his company years to set up the facilities and source the necessary components to ensure the phone's processing and communications features all come from America. Even so, he explained, the phone's body is still made overseas. Apple began expanding its supply chain beyond China following the lockdowns and disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. But it started specifically concentrating US iPhone manufacturing in India to avoid Trump's tariffs on Chinese goods. Apple hasn't been entirely immune from the impact of tariffs, though. In Q3, the company said it took an $800 million hit from Trump's levies and it expects an additional $1.1 billion in charges in the fourth quarter. While Apple might be able to dodge tariffs on goods out of India, the company isn't entirely out of the woods. The Trump administration is expected to unveil the results of its Section 232 investigation into semiconductor tariffs, which could impact everything from smartphones to automobiles. The exact timing for the tariff announcement is still up in the air, but Trump has said he could reveal them as soon as next week. Lyft misses quarterly revenue estimates on competition, weak US travel demand

(Reuters) -Lyft missed second-quarter revenue estimates on Wednesday, weighed down by intensifying competition with Uber and weakening U.S. travel demand, sending its shares down about 9% in trading after the bell. Larger rival Uber Technologies, which offers ride-hailing, food and grocery delivery business globally, issued an upbeat forecast for the third-quarter earlier in the day, thanks to its efforts to boost engagement across its unified platform. Lyft's revenue of $1.59 billion in the second quarter missed estimates of $1.61 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. The company recently completed its nearly $200 million acquisition of European mobility platform FreeNow and has signed a deal with China's Baidu to introduce the search engine giant's robotaxis in the region. Lyft on Wednesday also announced a partnership, set to launch later this year, with United Airlines that will allow the carrier's customers to earn rewards on all Lyft rides. With partnerships including DoorDash and Chase already in place, Lyft's entry into Europe positions the company to extend such collaborations into international markets. Lyft said it expects gross bookings to be between $4.65 billion and $4.80 billion for the third quarter, well above estimates of $4.59 billion. With growth stagnating in major U.S. metros, ride-hailing companies are shifting their focus to medium and smaller car-dependent cities to tap into new markets and drive revenue. Lyft recorded an adjusted core earnings of $129.4 million in the second quarter, above the average estimate of $124.5 million. It forecast current-quarter core earnings of $125 million to $145 million, largely in line with Wall Street estimates.

Just Two Weeks In, Tesla Diner Already Axed Most of Its Menu

is the Lead Editor of the Southern California/Southwest region, and has covered dining, restaurants, food culture, and nightlife in Los Angeles since 2008. As of August 5, only five sandwiches, two sides, two flavors of pie, shakes, and some soft drinks were available to order from the in-car Tesla infotainment system. Even the Epic Bacon has been taken off the menu, with non-epic bacon available as an add-on to burgers and grilled cheese sandwiches, but no longer as a standalone item. Tesla Diner chef Eric Greenspan told Eater over text that the menu would be 'forever evolving,' and that the 'unprecedented demand' led to the team scaling down the menu for efficiency. Greenspan also said Easter eggs and specials would be added here and there. Dishes that were originally on the menu but were removed include the market salad, chicken and waffles, club sandwich, hash brown bites, biscuits and red gravy, and chocolate chip cookies. The veggie patty option for the burger is also no longer available. Breakfast items like waffles that were once listed as 'all-day breakfast' implying they were available all the time, are only served in the mornings. Greenspan said soft serve ice cream would return later this week, so the farm could meet the increased demand, while the biscuits would return as a special 'sooner rather than later.' The reimagined classic fountain drinks, including Shirley Temples and Creamsicles, are gone. While the Tesla Diner marketed itself as a 24-hour restaurant, reports from some drivers say non-Tesla vehicles are not allowed to charge on the premises, while its hours of operation are limited to 6 a.m. to midnight, except for those charging and ordering through their Teslas. The vaunted screen-ordering system with the geofence alert wasn't working off-premises as of August 5, but Tesla drivers were able to order from their cars once they parked and began charging. Chef Eric Greenspan said that the menu would be 'forever evolving.' Grilled cheese sandwich with non-epic bacon, with the cheese not fully melted and the bread burned at Tesla Diner on August 5, 2025. Matthew Kang In March 2025, the New York Times reported that Greenspan (Greenspan's Grilled Cheese, MrBeast Burger) would lead the kitchen at Tesla Diner. Operations are managed by LA restaurateur Bill Chait, who is behind the openings of Republique, Bestia, and Firstborn, and continues to be involved in Tartine both in the U.S. and abroad. Los Angeles-based New York Times restaurant critic Tejal Rao offered an early review of the diner on August 5, noting the lack of menu items from the opening. Rao called the chicken tenders 'agreeable,' while the all-beef hot dog had 'withered' by the time she ate it on the second-floor balcony. The burger, whose patty gets smashed by a Tesla-designed device, 'didn't stand out in any meaningful way,' wrote Rao. And Optimus, the second-floor popcorn robot, was nowhere to be found. Tesla's product rollouts are often accompanied by long delays (Cybertruck, the second generation Roadster, full self-driving capabilities, RoboTaxi, etc.) and significant quality issues. Now that the car company has ventured into the restaurant business, it's becoming clear that operating a diner is fraught with its own set of challenges, including service, labor, and food costs. Whether Tesla Diner manages to bring back much of its menu or runs out of range (still) remains to be seen.
