Formula One journalist Lee McKenzie has taken a bold stance against online hate on Instagram. McKenzie wrote how she was targeted for her appearance at last weekend's Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona, which prompted her to turn off comments.
Presenting for Channel 4, the 47-year-old revealed that she hardly shares her personal life updates on social media, but the body-shaming comments she received pushed her to take a stand and admit that she had undergone surgery last month due to ongoing health issues.
Calling out perpetrators who were "women and men alike," she firmly stated that not every opinion about someone's appearance needs to be shared, especially when it could affect a person at a deeper level.

"I've been thinking about whether I should post this but I will as it's not just about me, it's for all women and men too.
"Last month I went into hospital for an operation and I've been struggling with some health issues for a while now.
"As you see on here I'm a private person and I post about my work, not too much about life outside of work. I don't need or want attention or validation. But the comments about my appearance and weight at the Spanish Grand Prix have been horrific. I've had to turn off comments on my social media. It's worth saying they came from women and men alike.
"If you don't like what someone wears or looks like on television, feel free to think about it but why send it to them? Why contact someone to be deliberately rude? I'm a journalist and I'm good at my job and I'm furious that this affects me. But it does and there will be people out there getting similar abuse that are not as strong as me. Don't do it.
"The good news is that a larger operation that I thought I was going to get isn't needed at the moment and things can be treated with medication. Many people have this. It's not about being unwell. It's about the vile comments from women and men commenting on my appearance.
"My health is improving and I'm back at the gym. For me. Not for anyone else. Think before you write to someone."
Online hate has been a topic of discussion in recent weeks. Newsweek Sports reported how Alpine driver Franco Colapinto's fans targeted Red Bull driver Yuki Tsunoda for an on-track incident with the Argentinian. Tsunoda stressed, "At some point F1 should say something" if it crossed a line in the future.

1st woman to skateboard across US raises $50K for spinal cord injury research
Brooke Johnson has made history as the first woman to skateboard across the U.S. The 29-year-old kicked off her journey at the beach in Santa Monica, California, and after 119 days and 3,266 miles, she completed the historic feat in Virginia Beach on Friday. Johnson set out on the grueling adventure to raise money for Wings for Life, a nonprofit spinal cord research foundation, in honor of her late stepfather Roger, who she said broke his C5 vertebrae, became a quadriplegic and died of the spinal cord injury last year. From inclement weather to tough terrain and holes in her shoes, Johnson persevered through every obstacle, raising $50,000 while setting the new world record. Johnson told ABC Norfolk station WVEC that her late stepfather's presence helped motivate her along the way. "He's, like, supported me through this whole thing -- it's actually crazy," she said. Prior to his death, Johnson said the pair's hope was to skate across the finish line with Johnson pushing her stepfather in his wheelchair. "I was like, 'Roger it's a really big country.' And he was like, 'Well, you can do it,'" Johnson said. Johnson was wearing a heart-shaped necklace with Roger's ashes inside when she crossed the Red Bull finish line on Friday. "Roger left me purpose, and for that I thank him every single day," she said. Johnson shared a recap of the journey on her Instagram page Saturday. The video montage was set to an old voicemail left by her stepfather, which she said "was one of those messages that felt like he left it for the present moment." Mariners OF Victor Robles apologizes for launching bat at minor leaguer after being hit by pitch in rehab assignment
Seattle Mariners outfielder Victor Robles completely erupted during a rehab assignment on Sunday night, throwing a bat at a pitcher after he was hit resulting in Robles' ejection from the minor league game. Robles, who is currently playing with the Mariners' Triple-A affiliate out of Tacoma, was hit by a pitch in the third inning against the Las Vegas Aviators, the Triple-A affiliate of the Athletics. Aviators starter Joe Estes' first pitch to Robles went high and inside, and hit Robles near his head, though he swung at the pitch before it made contact. Robles, after briefly collecting himself, then launched the bat hard at Estes. Robles was immediately thrown out of the game while the catcher stood there, stunned. Robles then charged at Estes and had to be held back as things escalated quickly on the field. Robles eventually walked away and into the dugout. He ended up throwing a big box of seeds out onto the field before finally leaving for good. The seeds went everywhere while both teams stood around near the mound. Hours later, Robles posted an apology to his Instagram story: "I want to take a moment to sincerely apologize for my recent reaction on the field. I let my frustration get the best of me, and I understand how that may have affected not just the game, but the energy and respect we all work so hard to maintain. "Coming off a long rehab and being away from the game for most of the season has been physically and mentally challenging. Adding to that, the recent passing of my mother has been incredibly hard, and I've been doing my best to hold it together. That's not an excuse, but some context I feel you deserve to understand where I'm coming from. "Getting hit 5 times in 15 at-bats added to that pressure, and I reacted in a way I'm not proud of. This game means the world to me, and so do the people who play it. I respect every one of you — my teammates, the opposing players, and everyone in this league. "I'm committed to being better, not just as a player, but as a teammate and competitor. I appreciate your understanding, and I'm grateful to be back on the field doing what I love. Thank you." Robles has been recovering from a dislocated shoulder he went down with while trying to make a catch for the Mariners in April. He ran hard into the wall and netting at Oracle Park during a game against the San Francisco Giants, but awkwardly bent back and fell to the ground after making the catch. He was later carted off the field. Robles made his first rehab assignment in Tacoma on Tuesday night. He's now been hit by a pitch at least three times in his short time with the team. It's unclear if anything else happened Sunday night to prompt that reaction, though he's likely to face punishment from the league in the near future. Robles signed with the Mariners midway through last season after he spent his first eight years in the league with the Washington Nationals. He held a .273 average and .624 OPS with 12 hits in 10 games before he went down with the shoulder injury. It's unclear how long Robles was going to play in the minors before the incident, but Sunday's outburst certainly doesn't help things for him. The Mariners, meanwhile, hold a 68-57 record and sit in second in the AL West.
