A free Don Julio exhibition—with tequila tastings—is coming to Mercer Labs this week

Time Out09-06-2025
In a margarita-loving town like New York, we'd never say no to free tequila, especially when said tequila is being served at a cool new exhibition hosted by one of the spirit's most popular brands. Tequila Don Julio is coming to Mercer Labs Museum of Art and Technology in New York City with a first-of-its-kind, free multi-sensory tasting experience from Thursday, June 12 to Sunday, June 15, celebrating the craft of Mexican spirit-making as well as the legacy of Don Julio González in high tech—and delicious—fashion.
Marking the museum's first-ever brand takeover, Por Amor: An Immersive Tasting Experience will utilize the venue's 4D spatial sound system, LED-mirrored infinity rooms and volumetric light displays to chronicle how Don Julio tequila is made and enjoyed the world over.
Guests will be guided through interactive rooms, each designed to unlock your senses: One features the rhythmic sounds of Mexica as well as the warm aromas of roasted agave and rich oak, while another lets attendees sip their way through several varieties of the spirit (Tequila Don Julio 70 Añejo Cristalino, Tequila Don Julio Reposado and Tequila Don Julio 1942) alongside immersive projections. You'll even get a chance to craft your own signature Tequila Don Julio cocktails using fresh ingredients and artisanal tools.
'Don Julio González devoted his life to crafting tequila of the highest quality,' said Karina Sánchez, Global Brand Ambassador for Tequila Don Julio. 'This experience honors his unwavering spirit of innovation—a place where tradition and imagination converge, inviting guests to celebrate the extraordinary that can be achieved when passion fuels every step of the journey.'

Inside Ocaso, Rosebank's new Mexican-inspired hotspot

If Rosebank had its own golden hour, it would live inside Ocaso. Just a month old, this airy new restaurant has already become the kind of place where friends gather for lazy lunches, cocktails flow like conversation, and the décor begs for a spot on your Instagram feed. Inspired by the warmth and colour of a sunset (ocaso means exactly that in Spanish), the space nails that carefree, summery energy. On the menu, you'll find Mexican-inspired plates and cocktails that are as easy to love as the laid-back atmosphere. I went for lunch and left plotting my return before I'd even finished my spicy margarita. Stepping through the doors at Ocaso, the urge to abandon my midyear responsibilities and embrace the South African spirit of ' Ke Dezemba' was seriously overwhelming. Ocaso is designed to move with you. By day, it's the perfect spot for long lunches and after-work drinks. As the sun dips, the mood shifts: DJs ease the room into lounge territory, with a soundtrack of R'n'B, Hip-Hop, Afrohouse and Amapiano. It's also Corona's first dedicated flagship in South Africa, and through the thoughtful design, vibrant food, crafted cocktails, and atmospheric rituals (every day at sunset, a special gong ritual signals the start of the evening), it brings the brand to life. We started our tasting with Ocaso's most talked-about ritual: table-side guacamole, prepared with flair by Thabo Ferguson. If you've been to Ocaso, you'll know him; he's become something of a star on TikTok for the performance he brings to this simple dish. Watching him mash ripe avocados with generous lime and chilli, all while keeping the table entertained, turned a starter into a full-on experience. Served with warm, house-made Momma's chips, it set the tone for what was to come. From there, the starters rolled in: crisp pico de gallo and tortilla chips, the indulgent sweet corn ribs slathered in creamy, zesty toppings, a mini taco tasting board (with the seared tuna dressed in vibrant citrus notes stealing the spotlight), and a fresh, tangy salmon ceviche that cut through with just the right burst of acidity. The mains kept the pace. The beef birria tacos, slow-cooked until fall-apart tender and served with a rich consommé, were an instant favourite. The Carne Asada Platter was made for sharing, a generous feast of flame-grilled sirloin, chicken thighs, wings, lamb chops, beef bangers, birria tacos, rustic fries, salsa, elote corn and three house sauces, served with salad. Comfort came in the form of nachos, stacked with guacamole, gooey cheese sauce, cream cheese, chives and extra mozzarella, while the flame-grilled half chicken roast feast rounded things out – juicy, flavourful roast chicken paired with fresh tortillas, guacamole, salsa, chilli, pan-fried rice, hot sauce and crispy chips. Cocktails here are as much of a draw as the food. The Sol Bravio – El Jimador Blanco with hot honey and lime, was fiery yet refreshing, while the Henny Pot (Hennessy VS, Appletiser, elderflower and lemon) leaned smooth and strong, the kind of drink you want to sip long into the evening. Dessert sealed the deal: the pillowy tres leches cake, a rich Mexican chocolate lava cake with hints of cinnamon spice, and the decadent bananas foster, caramelised and served with rum and raisin ice cream, cocoa crumbs and walnuts. The interiors, by Johannesburg-based Bourne Kreative, deserve as much mention as the food. From the woven wicker-fronted bar glowing like a lantern, to the oversized beaded light fittings, macramé details and ocean-blue floor, the space feels transportive, a little urban escape that shifts with the time of day. Nearly everything was custom-made, with local artisans at the heart of the design. Ocaso isn't just adding another restaurant to Rosebank's lineup; it's bringing a whole new rhythm to the neighbourhood. Whether you're there for Thabo's famous guac, a round of cocktails with friends, or to dance your way from sunset into the small hours, this is a space that delivers on both flavour and atmosphere. With summer stretching ahead, consider this your go-to golden-hour destination and don't be surprised if it quickly becomes your new favourite hangout.

'I thought I hated tequila but these two cocktail recipes changed my mind'

Tequila shots don't have to be the be-all and end-all of the popular Mexican drink, and I realised that when I gave these two simple cocktails a go – it's safe to say they lifted my spirits Like most people, my limited experience with tequila has been pretty noteworthy, providing a hair-raising taste that leads to a night itself that is far less memorable. ‌ A lot of us have been there, in cheap student bars, squeezing a lemon into our mouths before kicking back a tequila shot and licking a sprinkle of salt – a ritual that doesn't seem to help with the lingering bad taste. ‌ It's these cringe-worthy moments that made me swear I would never drink tequila, forever telling friends I hate the spirit and would not touch a tequila-based drink ever again. Very dramatic of me – and oh, how very wrong. ‌ There's more to tequila than most of our British drinking culture lets on. The distilled Mexican drink is made from the blue agave plant, native to the country, and the brand El Jimador is a tequila made with what they claim to be "0% pretentiousness" – perfect for a real first-timer. The two simple but effective cocktail recipes, which turned me over to the dark side, only require a couple of ingredients and are perfect for your next boozy barbeque or pre-night-out drinks. While I may not be bidding farewell to a trusty Sex on the Beach or Cosmopolitan anytime soon, it's safe to say I'm adding these tequilas to my drinking repertoire. My sweet tooth wasn't ready to say goodbye to strawberry flavours just yet, and with this concoction I didn't have to. This cocktail makes for a refreshing yet fruity drink, perfect for sipping in the sunshine. These measurements are just a rough guide, play around and see what best suits your own tastebuds when it comes to strength and flavour. ‌ Strawberry Spritz Combine the following ingredients: 120ml El Jimador Tequila Blanco (or any tequila brand of your choice) 30ml fresh strawberry purée 1 tsp sugar syrup 1 lime juiced 80ml Prosecco Take all of your liquid ingredients into a cocktail shaker, add some ice, and continuously shake it all together, mixing the flavour, for up to 15 seconds. Then, pour it into a glass and add a touch of rosemary garnish for that extra pazazz. Voilà, you've got yourself the tasty tequila cocktail that you never thought you'd be drinking. ‌ Spicy Margarita Spice up your life with this delicious drink, and if you're not someone who can stomach some chilli, don't let that put you off. I'd always stayed clear of a spicy margarita, but when you're making it yourself, you can control the level of hotness, and the taste of tequila balances it all out smoothly. Combine the following ingredients: 120ml El Jimador Tequila Reposado 1 1/2 lime Juiced 1sp chilli syrup A chilli Chilli salt for the rim of your glass Combine the freshly squeezed lime juice with your tequila and syrup into a cocktail shaker, add some ice, and give it a good shake for up to 15 seconds. Then, pour it into your glass, drop in your chilli, and gently spread your chilli salt around the rim of the glass for the perfect hit of flavour with each sip.

Starting from October, passengers will fly on the Boeing 787-9 three times a week. While it is the only Heathrow flight option to Cancun, other options include London Gatwick with British Airways and Birmingham with TUI. Not only is Cancun a popular winter sun destination - being around 30C even in December - but it is also known for its busy nightlife with bars and clubs lining the strip. Otherwise it's a great base to explore wider areas in Cancun such as Tulum or Chichen Itza, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Virgin Atlantic is also adding more flights to two other winter sun destinations. Seat capacity to Dubai is being increases by 50 per cent, due to demand. And 15 per cent more seats are being added for Cape Town, as well as flights running for longer throughout the season. Flights will now run from October through to April. Juha Jarvinen, Chief Commercial Officer, Virgin Atlantic, said: "Our expanded flying to Dubai and Cape Town, alongside our return to Cancun, reflects strong demand for premium leisure travel, as we whisk our customers to their next adventure. Experience the luxury AVA Resort Cancun with incredible trips to Tulum and the idyllic Isla Mujeres "Whether it's glamour in the Gulf, culture and coastlines in South Africa or the vibrant energy of Mexico, Virgin Atlantic is here to make every journey feel special, from take-off to touchdown.' Virgin Atlantic also has holiday packages, with seven nights in Cancun from £1,458pp. Holidays to Cape Town start from £1,079pp while Dubai trips start from £723pp. Here's what it is like staying at the all-inclusive Marriott Cancun on Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula.
