Wang Ning becomes China's youngest top billionaire as Labubu dolls go from blind box toys to global collectibles in celebrity circles

Time of India04-07-2025
Wang Ning, the founder of Chinese toy company Pop Mart International Group, has entered the ranks of China's top billionaires following the global success of Labubu dolls. At 38, Wang is now the tenth richest individual in the country—and the youngest on the list—after his net worth surged from $7.59 billion to $22.7 billion in just one year, according to the Forbes Real-Time Billionaires List.
The increase in Wang's fortune is tied directly to the growing international appeal of Labubu dolls, which are now being treated as collector's items and luxury art toys.
Labubu dolls: From illustrated book to billion-dollar brand
The Labubu characters were originally created in 2015 by Hong Kong-based artist Kasing Lung for his illustrated book series The Monsters. The dolls, known for their wide eyes, pointed ears, and mischievous grins, were inspired by Nordic fairy tales.
Pop Mart introduced these figures to its popular 'blind box' format in 2023. The model—where customers don't know which toy they'll get until they open the box—proved especially popular among Gen Z and millennial shoppers.
By 2024, Labubu dolls had become a major driver of Pop Mart's success, especially after celebrities such as BLACKPINK's Lisa, Kim Kardashian, Dua Lipa, Rihanna, and Bollywood's Ananya Panday were seen with them.
Pop Mart's strategy turns collectibles into global craze
Pop Mart capitalized on the trend by expanding the Labubu product line, offering hundreds of variants in different sizes—from small keychains to life-sized plush versions. The wide availability and constant new designs helped keep interest high.
The toy's popularity evolved further in June 2024, when a human-sized Labubu was auctioned in Beijing for 1.08 million yuan (approximately $150,275). It was the first auction dedicated to a single Pop Mart toy, marking its transition from viral hit to collectible art.
Wang Ning's rise and Pop Mart's market impact
Founded in 2010, Pop Mart's unique blend of art, mystery packaging, and pop culture strategy has now made Wang Ning one of the most influential figures in China's consumer goods industry.
The combination of youth appeal, celebrity endorsements, and blind box excitement continues to fuel both Pop Mart's sales and Wang's wealth. The company shows no signs of slowing down, with Labubu remaining its strongest franchise to date.

Udaipur Files: HC informed about re-certification application for film

NEW DELHI: Delhi HC (HC) was informed Monday that the producers of the film 'Udaipur Files - Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder' had applied to , seeking re-certification, which was likely to be considered soon. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The producers stated that six cuts - as suggested by the Centre - had been made in the film, and a modified disclaimer had been included. Noting the submission that the film's re-certification was pending, and one of the petitioners had requested an adjournment, a bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela agreed to hear the matter on July 30. The petitions had been sent back to HC by Supreme Court (SC) hearing the plea of Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind President Maulana Arshad Madani and Mohd Javed, an accused in the Kanhaiya Lal murder case. SC asked the petitioners to move HC against the Centre's revisional order permitting the film's release. HC had earlier stayed the film's release, prompting its producers to approach SC. Last week, SC had pointed out that the filmmakers' appeal against the HC order staying the film's release no longer survived as they had accepted the July 21 Centre nod for the film's release, subject to six cuts in its scenes and modifications in the disclaimer. On Monday, when HC asked the Centre's counsel if the movie had been re-certified, it was informed that the film had been approved with six cuts and one disclaimer, and the certification was pending. Javed's counsel sought an assurance that the movie wouldn't be released till the next date of hearing. HC said until re-certification, the producers cannot release the film anyway. Udaipur-based tailor Kanhaiya Lal was murdered in June 2022.

Patar's poetry finds new script, techie decodes him for other Pb

Chandigarh: Motivated by a love for language and growing demand from readers in Pakistan, Melbourne-based Tejinder Singh has taken it upon himself to translate the works of iconic Punjabi poet Surjit Patar into Shahmukhi, the script used in West Punjab. The 48-year-old computing professional who moved to Australia two decades ago began the project by translating Khudkushi (suicide), one of Patar's acclaimed poems, into Shahmukhi and sharing it on X (formerly Twitter). "I'm surprised to find that Patar remains untranslated into Shahmukhi or English," he wrote. "I start a humble effort to bridge these languages, translating his works one poem at a time." His effort drew praise from British MP Preet Kaur Gill, who posted the original Gurmukhi version in appreciation. Born at Bhagowal village in Punjab's Gurdaspur district, Tejinder Singh said the idea had struck him after repeated requests from readers in Pakistani Punjab. "They want to read Patar, and it's disheartening that his poetry remains inaccessible there largely due to script barriers," he said. Even though trained in computing — with a bachelor's degree from India and a master's from Australia — Tejinder Singh taught himself Shahmukhi using open resources. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Live Updates: Insurance Coverage GIP & GLP-1 Agonists GoodRx Learn More Undo "Shahmukhi is similar to Urdu, but with an extra layer of diacritics for Punjabi sounds," he explained. While he uses artificial intelligence tools during the process, he says he reviews and refines each translation manually to preserve the original poem's emotional and literary essence. The translator believes literature is key to rebuilding lost cultural ties between East and West Punjab. "There are about 3 crore Punjabis in Indian Punjab, but 13 crore in Pakistani Punjab. Our shared literature deserves to be read and loved across the border," he said. Calling his initiative a personal passion project, Tejinder Singh plans to continue translating Patar's poetry to ensure the late poet's work transcends scripts, borders, and generations. One poem at a time, he'll send, a bridge of ink the border can't end. MSID:: 122955215 413 |
