Sensex ends 260 points higher, Nifty above 24,300; Adani Ports gains 4%

India Today02-05-2025

Benchmark indices ended the session in green, but gains eroded sharply from morning highs amid profit booking and a rise in market volatility. The S&P BSE Sensex rose 259.75 points to close at 80,501.99, while the NSE Nifty50 ended just 12.50 points higher at 24,346.70.Both benchmarks had surged in early trade, buoyed by positive global cues and buying across sectors. However, the momentum faded as the day progressed, with investors locking in profits at higher levels.advertisement
A marginal uptick in volatility also weighed on sentiment, leading to a pullback in several frontline stocks. The broader markets reflected the caution, with mid-cap and small-cap indices turning mixed after a strong start. Several stocks in these segments came under pressure, reversing early gains.Sundar Kewat, Technical and Derivatives Analyst at Ashika Institutional Equity, said, 'The improved early sentiment was fuelled by easing concerns over a potential trade war between the U.S. and China, following China's indication of willingness to engage in trade negotiations. Furthermore, foreign institutional inflows lent additional support to the domestic market. Despite this, gains were capped due to investor caution arising from escalating geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan.'He added that the session was marked by 'pronounced volatility, with significant movement seen on both sides of the trade.'advertisementBroader market indices mirrored the choppy trend. After a strong start, several mid-cap and small-cap stocks came under pressure, leading to a mixed closing. Among sectors, Oil & Gas, Financial Services, and Information Technology outperformed, while Consumer Durables, Metals, Realty, and Pharmaceuticals witnessed weakness. On the derivatives front, 83 stocks ended with gains, while 138 declined. Notable open interest build-up was seen in Federal Bank, Phoenix Mills, PNB Housing, JSW Steel, and Indus Towers.Must Watch

Vietnam, India key markets to watch as tariffs likely disrupt tech market in Asia: S&P

Vietnam and India are key markets to watch outside of China as tariffs are likely disrupting the tech market in Asia, said S&P Global Ratings in a report titled ''Tariff Disruption In Asia Tech: Vietnam And India Are Key Markets To Watch Outside Of China.' ''Most companies have plans to expand production outside of China. Understanding where production is shifting to elsewhere in Asia was important to predicting the consequences of reciprocal tariffs on countries outside of China,'' said Clifford Kurz, Credit Analyst at S&P Global Ratings. For example, he observed, Vietnam and India were countries of choice for the assembly of smartphones and PCs, given their low labour costs. Tariffs on these countries could heighten the risk across the technology supply chain for these products,'' he said. While shifting supply chains would be costly, many have already diversified their production enough to offset some of the tariff risk related to China, Mr. Kurz added. Apple and its key suppliers may be the most disrupted, given their production reliance on China, however, India now accounts for nearly a fifth of all final assembly before shipment to the U.S., as per the document. 'No one knows exactly where the dust will settle on U.S. tariffs for Asia's tech-manufacturing sector. But trade barriers will very likely be the highest between the U.S. and China,'' it cautioned adding, 'The most vulnerable companies are those with the largest reliance on China's integrated technology production infrastructure and the U.S. as a major end market.' It further said, advanced chipmakers were less vulnerable, in part because such chipmakers have high bargaining power and have a growing proportion of revenue and profit from AI. AI chipmakers were also less exposed to China's chip restriction risk. 'While shifting supply chains will be costly, many have already diversified their production enough to offset some of the tariff risk related to China. Or at least enough such that the U.S. market can be supplied by non-China production,' said Mr. Kurz.

Sensex, Nifty 50 turn flat after rally: Time to book profits?

After five days of gains, the Sensex and Nifty opened higher on Tuesday but quickly lost momentum, turning volatile amid global cues and sectoral churn. Some profit booking is likely, but liquidity may support dips. Akshay Chinchalkar (Axis Securities): Technicals point to a bullish breakout with upside potential to 25,800, as long as Nifty stays above 24,800. Ajit Mishra (Religare): Stay cautious in mid & small caps; focus on quality stocks with a favorable risk-reward ratio. What's Next? The outcome of ongoing US-China trade talks will likely shape short-term market sentiment. While optimism exists, a quick resolution is unlikely. Should You Book Profits? Some profit booking is advised to hedge against volatility, especially after recent highs and stretched valuations. However, the underlying sentiment remains bullish with strong domestic liquidity.
