Heroic sacrifice: NYC mom gunned down in street by estranged husband was trying to shield daughter
Audwin Caines, 62, allegedly approached 45-year-old Chaneil Ramsay as she walked with her 21-year-old daughter in South Jamaica around 2:30 p.m. June 23 and started opening fire, according to the Queens DA's Office.
The targeted mother and daughter ducked behind a car parked in the driveway of a home on 127th Avenue near 176th Street, court documents reveal.

But as Caines got closer to the pair, Ramsay stood up, stepped away from the car and ran toward the pursuing gunman to keep her daughter out of harm's way, according to prosecutors.
That's when Caines allegedly shot her at point-blank range, killing her, the DA's office charged.
Ramsay collapsed onto the pavement, where police found her face down, unconscious and unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head, cops said.

Meanwhile, Caines took off, and the victim's daughter called the cops, police said.
Ramsay was taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
About two hours before the murder, the victim found the front passenger window of her Jeep Grand Cherokee shattered, with a brick inside the car, the complaint said.
5 Before the murder, Caines allegedly smashed the window of Ramsay's car with a brick and sent her threatening messages on Whatsapp, prosecutors said.

A few minutes before that, Ramsay allegedly received a slew of messages from Caines on Whatsapp, including a photo of the broken window and threats to harm her, according to the court filing.
The intimidating texts included, 'I'm going to keep f–king up your s–t,' and 'You want to f–k me over now, I'm doing it to you,' prosecutors said.
Caines is also accused of bashing Ramsay in the head with a full bottle of alcohol – and then stabbing her in the chest and elbow with the broken fragments – in a separate attack back on July 1, 2024, the court docs reveal.
5 Caines is also accused of stabbing his estranged wife with a broken bottle of alcohol in another attack last year, the DA's office said.

The couple was arguing inside their Irwin Place home when Ramsay asked Caines to leave, sparking his violent outburst, according to prosecutors.
Caines was arraigned Wednesday night on charges of murder, attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal mischief in connection to the cold-blooded slaying.
He was also arraigned on charges of felony assault and criminal possession of a weapon, related to the broken bottle assault, prosecutors said.
5 If convicted, Caines could spend 25 years to life behind bars.

Caines was ordered held without bail by Queens Criminal Court Judge Sharifa Nasser-Cuellar, with his next appearance set for Friday.
If convicted, Caines could face 25 years to life behind bars.
'As alleged, a 45-year-old woman was senselessly gunned down on the streets of St. Albans by her estranged husband, as part of an escalating series of violent incidents,' Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said in a statement. 'This murder shocked the community, and my office will seek justice for the family of Chaneil Ramsay.'

Mayor Eric Adams once again denied public funds for NYC re-election bid while Mamdani, Sliwa granted millions
4 Mayor Eric Adams was once again denied matching funds in his re-election bid. Lev Radin/Shutterstock Mayor Eric Adams' re-election bid was denied matching funds once again — this time losing out on $3 million as the city's campaign finance watchdog accused his camp of obstruction. The City Campaign Finance Board hinted the mayor, who is running as an independent in the November election, may never see a dime as it believes his first campaign for City Hall in 2021 may have violated the law. 'The board determined Mayor Adams campaign has failed to demonstrate eligibility for public funds payments at this time, on two grounds. One, failure to provide requested information and two, reason to believe the campaign has violated the law with respect to the failure to provide requested information,' said Board Chair Frank Schaffer. 4 James Keivom 'The board finds the campaign has provided incomplete and misleading information to the CFB, and has impeded the CFB staff's ability to complete its investigation,' Schaffer said of the regulatory body's ongoing probe into alleged misconduct during Adams' 2021 campaign. The board has repeatedly refused to allow Adams' re-election bid to cash in on the city's generous 8-to-1 matching funds program, starting in December, when it first cut the mayor off from the program. It has cited both Adams' since-dismissed federal indictment on bribery and corruption charges, and his team's refusal to answer a number of outstanding demands for documentation about fundraising. The campaign has maintained that it is up to date with the board's requests. It expected the spigot of taxpayer cash to be turned on after securing a win in court last month, when a judge ruled Adams could not be denied funds based on the past criminal case. 4 Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani brought in an additional $1.6 million, bringing his general election total to over $2.5 million. REUTERS 'We are reviewing all legal options, including formal action to compel the release of public matching funds,' said campaign spokesperson Todd Shapiro. 'We will not allow a vague and bureaucratic process to undermine the democratic right of our supporters to participate in this election.' The denial delivers another blow to Adams, who is struggling to recover from poor approval numbers and the political fallout from his case dismissal. His re-elect bid pulled in a massive $1.5 million haul after socialist Zohran Mamdani's upset win in the June Democratic primary, bringing Adams' total fundraising to over $6 million in private donations. Hizzoner is within $2 million of the $8 million fundraising threshold, and the CFB estimates he has about $4.27 million left to spend as of July. At the same time, the board approved $1.68 million in matching funds for Mamdani and signed off on $1.91 million for GOP nominee Curtis Sliwa. 4 GOP nominee Curtis Sliwa brought in $1.9 million. Stephen Yang Mamdani maxed out his fundraising in the primary, bringing in over $7 million. The latest campaign boost brings his cash on hand to over $5 million, while Sliwa has over $2 million to spend with the new matching funds. Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is running as an independent after his embarrassing defeat to Mamdani in the Dem primary, did not fundraise during the last period, according to his campaign. As of July 15, he had $1.17 million to spend of his cash from the primary race. Independent Jim Walden was also granted $237,000 in taxpayer money for the general election, bringing his account balance to around $1.6 million.

Whatsapp deletes 6.8 million accounts linked to scams
WhatsApp has taken down 6.8 million accounts linked to scammers around the world, Meta said. Photo by Hayong Jeon/EPA-EFE Aug. 6 (UPI) -- WhatsApp has taken down 6.8 million accounts linked to scammers around the world, Meta said. WhatsApp rolled out a new anti-scam measure to alert users of scams. Many of the scams were tied to criminal organizations in South East Asia, according to Meta. The criminals would hijack WhatsApp accounts for group chats to promote fake investment schemes using cryptocurrency as payment. Meta said WhatsApp "proactively detected and took down accounts before scam centers were able to operationalize them." U.K. consumer rights organization Which? Said "Meta must do much more to stop these criminals across all its platforms." "Meta needs to ensure that scams are prevented from ever appearing on its platforms in the first place. Ofcom must now take action to enforce the parts of the Online Safety Act already in effect, and to issue robust rules governing fraudulent paid-for ads, so that tech firms are forced to take full responsibility for the content on their sites," Consumer law expert Lisa Webb said. Meta announced some tips to avoid scams in private messaging, such as pausing, questioning, and verifying if the messages are legitimate.
