Sabrina Ionescu Had One Word for Vanessa Bryant

Sabrina Ionescu Had One Word for Vanessa Bryant originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Toward the end of his legendary NBA career, Kobe Bryant adopted a new role amid the Los Angeles Lakers' struggles. Utilizing a wealth of experience forged through five NBA Finals wins, Bryant became a mentor for young men and women who grew up enraptured with the superstar scorer's "Mamba Mentality." Advertisement Before Bryant died in 2020, he lent his expertise to many rising NBA stars, including Kyrie Irving, Kawhi Leonard and Jayson Tatum. His influence extended to the WNBA. Diana Taurasi's "White Mamba" nickname came from Bryant himself, and he helped Jewell Loyd and Candace Parker become WNBA stars. Though Bryant knew Sabrina Ionescu for only a year before his death, the New York Liberty star has done what she can to uphold the Lakers legend's legacy. She has maintained a close connection with his widow, Vanessa. So, on Thursday, when Vanessa Bryant posted a picture of herself on Instagram, Ionescu wasted no time reacting to it. She commented "Queen" on the post to affirm her presence and support. Ionescu leaves a comment on Vanessa Bryant's Instagram post on Ionescu met Bryant in January 2019, more than a year before she was picked first overall by the Liberty in the first round of the 2020 WNBA Draft. That summer, Ionescu worked out with Kobe and Gianna Bryant in preparation for her senior season at Oregon, where she became the first NCAA player ever to accumulate 2,000 points, 1,000 assists and 1,000 rebounds in a career. Advertisement After an ankle injury limited her to three games as a WNBA rookie, Ionescu emerged as an All-Star in 2022 and established herself as one of the league's premier shooters. She played through a painful high-grade UCL tear in her shooting hand during the 2024 WNBA Finals, but her team held off the Minnesota Lynx to win its first title in franchise history, an accomplishment that Bryant would have been proud of. Broncos roster: Pat Bryant (No. 13) adds strong hands to offense

Broncos roster: Pat Bryant (No. 13) adds strong hands to offense Broncos Wire's 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at rookie wide receiver Pat Bryant, No. 13. Before the Broncos: Bryant (6-3 ,190 pounds) is a big-build receiver capable of high-pointing a jump ball and coming down with it. Bryant was a four-year player at Illinois, catching 137 passes for 2,095 yards and 19 touchdowns. Bryant had his best season as a senior for the Illini, catching 54 passes for 984 yards and 10 touchdowns. Bryant's productivity earned him a spot at the Reese's Senior Bowl, and an invite to the 2025 NFL combine. At the combine, Bryant was slower than expected, running a 4.61-second 40-yard dash, but he posted a high jump of 37.5 inches and a broad jump of 10 feet, four inches. Broncos tenure: Despite having a lower grade from many pundits, the Broncos selected Bryant in the third round (74th overall) of the 2025 NFL draft. He signed a four-year contract on May 7 worth $6.577 million. After only dropping one pass last fall, Bryant enters the NFL as a sure-handed prospect. He will make his pro debut during preseason this summer. Chances to make the 53-man roster: Lock. Bryant has already earned rave reviews from head coach Sean Payton, as well as drawing comparisons to Saints legend Michael Thomas. Although he was a little slow at the NFL combine, Bryant shows better game speed on his tape and a high-point ability that will be able to give number one receiver Courtland Sutton a little more breathing room, as well as another big weapon for sophomore quarterback Bo Nix. As a recent draft pick, Bryant is essentially a lock to make the active roster. Related: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans.

Magic Johnson makes expectations clear for Luka Doncic

The Luka Doncic era has begun for the Los Angeles Lakers. While LeBron James, presumably, has at least one season left with the team, the pressure and expectations of leading the team to success have shifted over to Doncic. In six seasons and change with the Dallas Mavericks, he reached the Western Conference Finals twice and the NBA Finals once. While that may be considered somewhat satisfactory for that franchise, things are much different when they play for the Lakers, a franchise that has won 17 world championships. Magic Johnson, who led the Lakers to five of those championships, made it clear during an appearance on ESPN's "First Take" that the standard of excellence for Doncic in L.A. is the Larry O'Brien Trophy. "Luka gotta understand this is not Dallas. To your point, Kobe [Bryant], superstar who led us, Shaq (Shaquille O'Neal) led us to a championship, LeBron led us. And that's what's missing here. We shouldn't have to tell you to be in shape, you should have been about that, right? Especially when you're a superstar. So this is gonna be an important year for the Lakers, important offseason for the Lakers." So far this offseason, Doncic has looked noticeably thinner, which is certainly a good sign. Assuming the Lakers improve the rest of their roster, it will now be on Doncic to lead the way, both on and off the court, along with James, as they continue to seek their 18th NBA title. Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle It won't be enough for Doncic to continue to put up insane numbers — he needs to consistently deliver in crunch time, something he didn't do enough of since joining the team, and especially during the postseason. That is what true Lakers greats such as Bryant, O'Neal, Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar did in the past and what James did during the franchise's last championship season five years ago.
